Deadpool 2 dropped pretty hard as well and looks like it will finish below the first one. Maybe they should've saved that for later in the Summer instead of releasing it right after Infinity War. Looking at the June schedule aside from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2, nothing looks like a mega blockbuster, so I don't know why they didn't just wait.

It's still a huge hit, I just think it would've made more if it wasn't sandwiched between Infinity War and Solo.

Man with the garbage nightmare it took to make Solo with all the reshoots making the end result cost 300+ million before any spending on advertising... I ever expected Disney to kill off Star Wars this quickly even with releasing a movie each year.

"Kill off"? Didn't the movie before this one make, like, a billion and a half?

We're in a world now where they put so much into these things that even something like that is viewed as a disappointment. Plus each one of these seem to be trending down instead of staying the course or showing growth.

If you say so, man. I'm not a Star Wars guy, so it doesn't matter to me, either way. My interest in the franchise begins and ends with wanting these anti-diversity, anti-SJW douchenozzles to be made to look like fools, at every possible turn.

Although, the notion that, in the new "Disney-fied", "SJWSW" era, the only one of the new movies to be made that centers a white male character doing the worst box office of the four that have come out, kind of makes me chuckle.

The Last Jedi had a production budget of between 200-217 million. It made 1.3 Billion in Box Office. Then there's all the merchandise tie in's. I don't think there's much question that Star Wars as a franchise is a cash cow for Disney and they can afford a misstep like Solo because the hardcores are still going to buy all the toys and memorabilia because they have to in order to be completionists.

I went to see Deadpool yesterday and saw a theatre showing Action Point.  Had no idea what that was by title alone, before seeing it was that Johnny Knoxville movie.  No idea it was already coming out as I don't think I ever saw TV ads, only advertised in theatres.  Looks like it did pretty poorly too but no idea what the audience on that would be these days anyway.  I mean, I will probably watch it on HBO but doesn't feel like anything I need to seek out.

The trailer for action point didn’t really sell anything about the movie. The production budget was $19 million. This one is going to eat it pretty hard.

I think my theater got "Action Point" though we didn't get "Upgrade" which actually looks like a lot of fun.

Update: We did not get "Action Point"

Huge drop for Solo second week. So what was the real culprit why this performed so low compared to other Star Wars fare? I have a few ideas.

1) Generally, they should slow down on the Star Wars spinoffs. There is a place for them for sure, but less than 6 months after Last Jedi? Seemed a bit fast. Would have been better at least waiting a year. If they are following the Marvel template, there is a huge difference in that brand and how they are able to tie it into a bigger story, etc.

2) I think the buzz beforehand on this may have made people second guess going to it relating to production issues, reshoots, etc. Granted, Rogue One had some of the same issues but that still did much better from a box office perspective.

3) Trailers for it didnt completely endear me to it.

4) The biggest piece of the puzzle may be shoehorning it in an already pretty packed May box office. Avengers was still running strong-ish and Deadpool 2 was certainly still very well running strong. Your typical movie-goer isnt going to go to action/comic films on a weekly basis.

5) Han Solo was certainly a character that was liked by fans, but I dont think it was as much as producers and the studio thought. It will be interesting to see how a Baba Fett standalone pic does comparatively.

The Solo trailer was for sure underwhelming. Didn’t sell me at all.

Now that they’re forcing a Star Wars movie every year I wouldn’t be surprised to see this happen more often.

One other thought is simply money... you have The Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Lost Kingdom coming immediately in June alongside lower fare like Ocean's 8, Hotel Artemis, and Tag. July has Mission Impossible: Fallout, Hotel Transylvania 3, and Ant-Man and The Wasp. Even August has stuff like The Meg and Disney's Christopher Robin.

For the average movie goer (say a family of 3 or 4) who maybe sees 3-4 movies a year tops and is already possibly pushing things this year, why spend that $$ on a movie like Solo which was fast on the heels of Star Wars: The Last Jedi when you have 2 legitimate blockbusters literally coming out a month later not even thinking ahead of whatever's coming October - December.

Ocean's 8 is getting shit on like the Ghostbusters reboot. Reviews have been mixed and the usual crybabies have been chiming in with "OMG WHY DID THEY HAVE TO REBOOT IT WITH ALL WOMEN!!?!?!?!?"

I'll admit, O8 didn't seem like something I should rush out and go see but it looked WAY better than GB.

Oceans 8 isn't very good, but at the same time "not very good" means that it's still better than 2 of the previous 3.

Oceans 8 isn't very good, but at the same time "not very good" means that it's still better than 2 of the previous 3.
11 and 13 are just fine.

I didnt recall the quality of the Oceans trilogy prior.... other than I liked the first one, but in comparison, the new one seemed maybe a bit less over the top but the performances in this one were kinda lacking something. Felt just kind of there. The script felt rushed and more disjointed than the other Ocean films too. It was ok but the formula of this franchise has kinda run thin.

Spoiler: show
I expected a Clooney cameo as his character died apparently (was this explained that he faked his death in 13? I cant even remember) but they teased he was still alive the entire film with nothing but yet another tease in the last scene (Bullock's character is his brother). I didn't get it with all the teases, other than maybe there is a plan to do one more of these with the guys and gals together. Oceans 21 anyone?

Given it's only on 245 screens, I wonder if there was a bit of a "re-release" of it for a very brief run/in specific areas given the Summer crowd?

Yeah they probably attached A Wrinkle in Time to something else as a double feature to ensure it passed the $100m barrier.

Not surprised JW was so massive, even with the very mixed reviews it's gotten. Will be more curious how it fares over the next couple weeks although it's lucky that really there's no big competition until July. The Sicario sequel is headlining next weekend then it's mainly gonna be The First Purge and Ant-Man and The Wasp.

First Ant-Man did $180 Million (about $199.945 Million if adjusted to today) and the sequel's gotten rave reviews already so I expect them to be very big.

I bet JW 2 tops around 380-400 million domestic. I can't see it having the holds the previous movie had as it has less buzz and worse reviews.

That seems like a pretty disappointing number for Ant-Man.   Sure, it is almost $20m more than the original movie, but I would have thought the Infinity War momentum would have carried it higher.

I'm still not used to this world of movies that by all metrics look to be doing extremely well yet happen to be a disappointment somehow. Considering Ant-Man is going to be the rare Marvel character series where it looks like there won't be any crossovers from other established characters in the films, and that they're probably going to take it down different paths genre wise... an almost $20 million dollar increase for it seems great as an opening weekend.

Ant-Man is going to profit $100 million overall as long as they hit $600 million worldwide. They're already at $161m worldwide from what I've read, so it's seen as inevitable they'll get to $600m.

People are weird with the disappointment shit for movies that make a nine figure profit.

It's because studios nowadays are relying on like 25% of their films (which are usually the  big marquee franchises) to make massive profits to cover the meager profits/losses from the other 75%, so when one of those big franchises don't blow the doors off, it makes news.

I fully agree with you, but Disney doesn't fit into this category. Their film divisions have made mega profit already this year even with two bombs.

It'll make big money and big profits, but the opening is the lowest for the MCU since..well, the last Ant-Man, and the last non Ant-Man MCU movie with a lower opening was the first Captain America.   So in the context of other Marvel movies, I'm sure it will be seen as a disappointment.

Not a chance. More likely Disney looks at anything it makes off Ant-Man and the Wasp as found money.

all of the reporting on it i've seen is how it's such a big improvement on the number the first one did and how it's the 20th straight Marvel movie to open at number 1. I don't think Disney or anyone is going to look at it negatively.

The only negative I've seen happened before the release. It was estimated that it would make $80-$85 million, so making less than that could be a let down of sorts. It had a similar jump to Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor did from their first movies to their sequels, though.

I actually caught Skyscraper last night. It was a dumb paint-by-numbers action flick that's elevated by Rock's prescence and charisma which is why I wound up not hating it.

Which is more surprising: The Rock not opening strong or Adam Sandler opening at Number 1 in 2018?

I know this is probably the least anticipated Rock movie/franchise in a while and Sandler is not really a Sandler movie as much as an animated kids movie in a summer where there haven't been a ton of kids movie but still a little surprising to me.
