I think its pro-gun stance (and it's heavy use in the trailer) at a time like this turned a lot of people off.

Ugh

https://www.avclub.com/eli-roth-says-death-wish-isnt-pro-gun-must-have-seen-a-1823550117

Yeah I just commented on this in the general movies thread, but this was certainly a pro-gun film, and like the article stated, there was alot of subtext that could be considered the usual ring-wing talking points. How they portrayed Chicago in this film sounds like something a typical NRA-toting ring-winger Trumponian would handle it.

What's the story on Hurricane Heist? It had bomb written all over it and looked completely ridiculous.

From the few commercials I've seen, the concept/plot looks ridiculous, but I feel like it could work in a 'so bad, it's good' type way. Probably just needs Nicolas Cage.

Yo, shout out to Jumanji: like, I'm never going to watch it, but I acknowledge it's impressive staying power.

All I know is that the preview for it said it's "from the director of The Fast and the Furious and xXx." Amazingly, they don't mention "Stealth", "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Empire", "Alex Cross" or "The Boy Next Door" as part of his resume.

I can't believe the budget was only $90 million. It obviously made them some hella money.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

Made a bit more, but considering the budget I wouldn't consider it a hit

1   N   Pacific Rim Uprising   Uni.   $28,003,000   -   3,708   -   $7,552   $28,003,000   $150   1

5   2   Tomb Raider   WB   $10,430,000   -55.9%   3,854   -   $2,706   $41,748,108   $94   2

6   4   A Wrinkle in Time   BV   $8,044,000   -50.5%   3,423   -557   $2,350   $73,886,607   -   3

Considering the amount of theaters "Isle of Dogs" is in, and the fact that "The Death of Stalin" is also getting by on demand (or at least I think) this is impressive

When a movie has been out over a month I don't really see it as that big of a deal

Right.  But $16 million is still huge for a movie out that long and you know, record breaking, so worth posting

Black Panther up to fifth all time in Domestic Box Office. Within the next week it will move past Jurassic World and Titanic to be number 3 all time. What a crazy run.

Regal looks disgusted seeing Black Panther at 4.  (at least on my phone, different perspective on my computer)

Hoping to catch A Quiet Place and Avengers double shot when that one opens.

Good to see A Quiet Place do so strongly. Worth the hype and praise (posted my thoughts in the Horror Thread). Also one of the few movies where I think it had effective teasers/marketing but also a strong name in Emily Blunt as far as horror movies go.

I'm happy for John Krasinski to finally break from the Jim from The Office typecast stigma.

Blockers did well, but I was expecting 30 million plus with the good reviews, buzz, and amount of advertising. I don't think it matched the openings for either of the Neighbors movies or Girls Trip for recent comparisons to other comedy openings.

I always liked Krasinski, so I was curious with this film.  Hearing all great stuff so far.

Blockers... I just have a hard time figuring out who the audience on that one is.  It is more the parents as the central figures but pushing "SUPERBAD OF GIRLS CUZ TEENAGE GIRLS LIKE SEX TOO".  As much of the shitty stuff as I watch or go see, unless one of my buddies explicitly goes out of his way to see that, it seems more like a catch on HBO movie for me.

Most of the commercials I've seen seem to center around the Cena buttchug scene. The reviews I've read made it seem like it has a great message while being funnier than most of the recent mainstream comedy films.

Dadaramu and Mamaramu hated this but only because it was quiet.

Dadaramu is the type of person that goes to the movies for big explosions and such. Anytime a movie like Independence Day or 2012 comes out he waters at the mouth over getting to see it on "the big screen".

So it's good to hear that this is a good movie because I wanted to see it.

I took time off from the Revolution to watch A Quiet Place tonight.  A couple next to me talked through the first 20 minutes so I had to tell them to shut up.  Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Horror movies are absolutely killing it at the box office right now with A Quiet Place and last year's It/Get Out/Split/Annabelle 2. Even something that looked terrible like Truth Or Dare did great numbers for what its budget was.

I've mentioned this before, but part of it is the whole Blumhouse factor. Horror movies are usually not expensive, and nobody in Hollywood seems to understand this more than Jason Blum. The movie can be really awful ("The Gallows", the first "Ouija" movie and apparently this) but because they are made with such low budgets, they almost always make their money back.

I hope this leads to those kinds of flicks gaining more credibility with serious award contention, bigger budgets and better re-imaginings of the classics. I know I'm in the minority but I enjoyed the Elijah Wood remake of "Maniac".

I enjoyed the Maniac remake too. My only complaint was that one third person shot about halfway into the movie.

Is Rampage going to flop or is it going to bank overseas?

Also Super Troopers 2 was nowhere close to the first one. For me it wasn't even in the same ballpark.

I'm surprised more companies don't go for low budget horror movies, throw them into a theater, and reap the 'easy' profit. Universal's rolling with this method IMO. Paramount figured that out with A Quiet Place and it's paying off.

As shitty as it was, props to Universal for Truth or Dare since they knew it'd make its money back opening week and everything after would be gravy for them. It's also made almost $8 Million overseas.

Get Out was $4.5 Million and made $255 Million worldwide for Universal. Insidious: The Last Key was $10 Million and made almost $167 Million worldwide. Happy Death Day was $4.8 Million and made almost $123 Million worldwide.

Those 4 Movies = $22.8 Million budget and have made a Worldwide Gross of $583 Million. Easy way to get money to create the blockbusters in your catalog that require more coin.

I think part of it is they don't want to be stereotyped as the "horror" studio.

That's why Blumhouse is around. They produce those lo budget horror movies for big profit. Jason Blum allows the writers/directors almost 100% freedom as well.

well it's already made over 200 million internationally. http://variety.com/2018/film/box-office/international-box-office-dwayne-johnson-rampage-1202778953/

So the answer to my question was that it was going to bank overseas.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

They usually hit a homerun as far as overall quality is concerned too.  Except for Annabelle, but that's probably more of a personal opinion.

He is? Being a non-movie guy, I'm not even aware of what he's been in, besides the MCU movies.

I was talking strictly about this week's box office since Infinity Wars made more money in its first week than Rampage and Blockers' entire runs thus far.

I just realized Gary's Regal avatar looks at Avengers, Rampage and Blockers on the box office list. Respectful nods towards Batista and Rock, and the horror at Cena.

Mind blown.
