College Footbaw 2018 Thread
« on: May 07, 2018, 06:34:03 AM »
Getting this one started up early as Spring Games have concluded.

#1: Lot of great coaching stories including Chip Kelly's return at UCLA, Herm Edwards debuting at Arizona State, Scott Frost trying to revitalize Nebraska back to glory, Josh Heupel has the tall task of repeating UCF's fortunes from last year, Jimbo Fisher takes over at Texas A&M, and Dan Mullen tries to repeat what he did with Florida.

#2: Offensive changes are afoot. Hawai'i, after trying to be hybridized last year, is embracing the Run & Shoot in proper form for the 2018 Season. Jackson State (with Hal Mumme as new OC) and Eastern Illinois are transitioning to the Air Raid offense. Georgia Southern is also embracing the Triple Option attack under new HC Chad Lunsford joining just a group of teams which run it: Air Force, Army, Georgia Tech, Navy, New Mexico, and Tulane. Also Scott Frost is bringing his spread option attack to Nebraska and Chip Kelly's bringing his spread zone option attack to UCLA. Chad Morris also brings his wide open offensive attack to Arkansas.

#3: A lot of teams are facing questions: Oklahoma trying to move on from so much talent, Alabama's decision to change QBs for the future while trying to stave off Clemson/Georgia/Ohio State in their playoff run, UCF trying to repeat their magical season, and teams trying to make a run inside the Top 25.

A lot of teams bringing back talent could sneak into the playoff picture to make it murky including Washington, Wisconsin, Miami, Michigan State, and Michigan.

Deep teams in the middle tier conferences have a chance to put up great records including Boise State, Florida Atlantic, San Diego State, and Toledo.

#4: Small school consistency remains on watch. Ohio has won at least 8 games for the past 3 seasons. Houston looks to improve off a 7-5 year under Major Applewhite in his 2nd year. Appalachian State has quietly gone 30-9 since their jump to the FBS. Troy has also gone 21-5 over the past 2 seasons.

RSr. CB Juwan Dowels has transferred from Syracuse to Western Michigan. Led Syracuse with 6 PD in 2015 as a Freshman, missed 2016, then came back last year and flashed against LSU (4 Tackles, 1 INT) and Clemson (5 Tackles) despite largely being a backup.

Western Michigan could have a solid secondary with Sam Beal, Justin Tranquill, and Dowels. Beal is a legitimate NFL Draft candidate with size (6'1" 189) and production (55 Tackles in 2016, 20 PD between 2016 & 2017).

Nope because he'll be a Graduate transferring. That's why sometimes a guy graduates in 3 & 1/2 years and gets 2 seasons of eligibility for their new FBS program if they've red-shirted as a Freshman.

Watching Hawai'i executing its Run & Shoot offense, including staples like the shovel, just feels so right. Also credit to Rolovich's super aggressive nature and sprinkling in stuff like the Zone Read Give/Keeper within the 'core' R&S offense.

Thursday we have #21 UCF @ Connecticut on ESPNU, New Mexico State @ Minnesota, Wake Forest @ Tulane on CBSSN, and Northwestern @ Purdue on ESPN.

Then Friday we get Syracuse @ Western Michigan, Army @ Duke, Utah State @ #11 Michigan State, Western Kentucky @ #4 Wisconsin on ESPN, San Diego State @ #13 Stanford on FS1, and Colorado @ Colorado State in a hot rivalry game on CBSSN.

I'm going to miss my first OU season opener in years as I'll be taking in All In festivities. :(

With my luck they're going to lose to Lame anyway.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

Boston College has a pretty brutal schedule down the stretch and I'd be stunned if they do better than 7-5 at best. Not helped by some games that are toss-ups such as Purdue and Wake Forest. I could easily seeing them going 3-9 or 4-8 if things go extremely wrong.

RB AJ Dillon is the main guy to know and looks to follow in the footsteps of William Green and Andre Williams as bruising big power backs. TE Tommy Sweeney should continue their pretty solid track record of producing solid TEs with NFL potential.

...we beat Kansas. Sure they're a bottom feeder P5 team, but they're still a power 5 team.

I couldn't sleep last night I was so excited.

Here's to hoping the coach can keep these kids grounded.

4 FCS teams had wins over FBS squads and App State nearly took out Pedo State (which would've been fantastic). Hawai'i continues to have a really fun return with their Run & Shoot Offense and Alabama looks like they're planning on a 2 QB Duel system for some of the season at least which should prove interesting.

Week 2 has some good matchups on slate: UCLA @ Oklahoma, North Carolina @ East Carolina, Georgia @ South Carolina, Iowa State @ Iowa, Penn State @ Pittsburgh, USC @ Stanford, California @ BYU, and Michigan State @ Arizona State.

909 made this comment and I agree that the Heisman may come down to Kyler Murray vs. Will Grier with Jonathan Williams (Wisconsin's RB) as a darkhorse candidate.

5 Weekend Notes
#1: Maine knocked off Western Kentucky and Samford, behind QB Devlin Hodges, challenged Florida State to a big scare.
#2: Hawai'i continues to be a potential Story of the Year. They're already 3-0 with QB Cole McDonald having thrown for over 1,000 yards with 13 TD vs 0 INT in just 3 games. The Run & Shoot's alive in the West!
#3: Nebraska's D will be scary this year once they gel and the offense comes alive. They had 7 Sacks and had outscored Colorado 21-6 for the 2nd & 3rd Quarters until a late 3rd Quarter TD by Colorado.
#4: LSU TB Nick Brosette is gonna be a beast this season after putting up 125 against Miami and 137 against SE Louisiana.
#5: Colorado State's QB K.J. Carta-Samuels is a guy to keep an eye on. He's been forced to sling the ball and nearly pulled off a comeback against Hawai'i and just beat Arkansas (dropping 389 yards with 2 TD).

Week 3 has a few intriguing FCS/FBS Matchups: #25 Rhode Island @ UConn (battle of New England!), #8 Wofford @ Wyoming, and #6 Eastern Washington @ Washington State.

UCF tries to continue their progress against a struggling North Carolina team. Georgia Tech/Pittsburgh square off in a big ACC matchup. A lot of spotlight games including #12 LSU at #7 Auburn, #17 Boise State at #24 Oklahoma State in an early test for Boise State's bowl hopes, and #4 Ohio State takes on #15 TCU in a game that TCU hopes to make a statement on for poll voters.

I'm waiting for Army's QB to break a big run. The outside has been there but they've been pounding the FB to consistent success. Hawai'i has been solid but a few missed throws and a bad drop have kept them stifled a bit.

Possible situation developing in the OU/Iowa State game, ISU just got the ball back only down two scores at the end of the third and OH MY GOD EVERYONE IN THE STADIUM SAW HOW OPEN THE RECEIVER WAS

It's about time for another Iowa State freak upset of a top 5/top 10 team.

Harvard knocked off Brown and Washington State blew a 30-17 lead to lose to USC 39-36 after a blocked FG with 1:41 left that would've tied the game up.

UCF beat up Florida Atlantic behind Heisman Dark Horse QB McKenzie Milton (895 and 9 TD through the air, 147 and 3 TD on the ground).

A lot of ranked teams got laid to waste including: #23 Boston College, #17 TCU, #15 Oklahoma State (by Texas Tech), #14 Mississippi State (by Kentucky), and #13 Virginia Tech by Old Dominion(!)

Also Oklahoma nearly got upset by ARMY.

On the FCS level: Illinois State pistol whipped Colorado State 35-19. #18 Nicholls beat #11 Sam Houston State, Idaho State toppled #22 North Dakota, and Chattanooga beat #17 Samford.

Finally Morgan State(!) knocked off #4 North Carolina A&T in one of the bigger upsets of the weekend.

Went to the TSU @ UH game yesterday. Weird that for two teams literally on opposite sides of the street, they hadn't played in over a decade.

Final score was 14-70, which was enough for Houston to cover the spread.

A massive slate on the FBS and FCS levels this weekend.

FBS Spotlight Games: Major Big10 game with #4 Ohio State against #9 Penn State. Hatred renews with #7 Stanford against #8 Notre Dame. #20 BYU tries to upset #11 Washington and Pac-12 action sees #19 Oregon battling #24 California while #12 West Virginia travels to battle #25 Texas Tech in a shootout.

Some under the radar games: Army, sitting at 2-2, travels to take on a hot 4-0 Buffalo team. Virginia (3-1) travels to North Carolina State (3-0). Coastal Carolina (3-1) takes on Troy (3-1) while Utah (2-1) tries to knockoff Washington State (3-1) and prove themselves as real.

FCS Spotlight Game: Dakotas EXPLODE as #3 South Dakota State goes on the road to take on #1 North Dakota State. Also #13 Villanova takes on #18 Stony Brook. #5 Eastern Washington takes on a hot Montana State squad that's 3-1 on the year.

Biggest FCS news was #21 Sam Houston State beating #13 Central Arkansas in OT 34-31. Biggest upset was Missouri State stunning #9 Illinois State 24-21 and Yale slapping #16 Maine around 35-14.

On the FBS side, Kentucky remains unbeaten at 5-0. Virginia Tech beat #22 Duke and Florida beat #23 Mississippi State showcasing how flux the low Top 25 rankings can be week to week.

Hawai'i is now 5-1 in a remarkable turnaround story kind of going under the radar with Top 25 teams and teams like Kentucky coming out of nowhere in their own success. Hawai'i went 7-7 in 2016 but last won 6 games in 2011 prior to that year and are coming off a season where they finished 3-9 last year.

Several upsets occurred at the FBS level, most notable being Auburn's loss to Mississippi State. Northwestern also upended Michigan State in a big win and a pair of SEC upsets saw Florida knock off LSU and Texas A&M beat a surging Kentucky team in OT. Going a little under the radar is Utah's decimation of Stanford.

On the FCS level, the big upset was Northern Arizona beating #6 Weber State and Portland State knocking off #14 Montana.

I've grown weary of out right trolling the LSU fans in the area and since my FCS alma mater DID beat a Big 12 school this year, I agreed to spread the good karma forward and keep my mouth shut.

But damn, I want to see some chaos in the college football postseason but I can't openly root for a Bama loss right now. I don't want to catch shit from the people I've been fucking with for close to 20 years. (it's all in fun - I think they know that)

Kansas is hiring Les Miles as their new HC.

In FCS news, Princeton finished the season a perfect 10-0 in the Ivy League. Kennesaw State has allowed just 163 points all year while scoring over 500.

Current FCS Playoff Teams: North Dakota State (11-0), Kennesaw State (10-1), Colgate (9-1), North Carolina A&T (9-2), Weber State (9-2), San Diego (9-2), Maine (8-3), Duquesne (8-3), Jacksonville State (8-3), Wofford (8-3), and Nicholls State (8-3)

That leaves 14 Spots and a lot of murkiness with a bunch of 8-3 teams that are solid but not spectacular. Probables: Big Sky = Eastern Washington and UC Davis at 9-2, Big South = Maybe Monmouth at 8-3, CAA = James Madison at 8-3 maybe Towson & Stony Brook at 7-4, MVC = South Dakota State at 8-2 and maybe Indiana State at 7-4, OVC = SE Missouri State at 8-3, and finally Southern = Maybe East Tennessee State at 8-3.

Even being a little generous that's 10 teams still leaving 4 spots. Not a lot of standouts beyond the top echelon this season.

Yeah. Very surprised Monmouth didn't make it myself as their 2 losses at the FCS level were to Princeton and Kennesaw State.

As usual, the 1st Round of playoff teams are all on ESPN3.com on Saturday. San Diego QB Anthony Lawrence is a name to know & watch for the NFL Draft (behind NDSU's Easton Stick) given his prolific career numbers. Duquesne RB A.J. Hines is a Junior but has also had a prolific 3 year run and may come out early.

Fun Fact: Incarnate Word plays Iowa State on 12/1 after their playoff game.

Mark Whipple is out at UMass. Shame as he's a solid HC but UMass' move up basically has doomed them. Financially, it's worth it (arguably) but success/exposure/recruiting wise it's been a disaster.

Brown HC Phil Estes is stepping down after 21 Seasons and a 115-94 career mark with 3 Ivy League Titles. Also after 21 years, Jerome Souers is stepping down at Northern Arizona with a 123-114 record.

William & Mary has announced Mike London as their new HC. He's best known for his run with Richmond including a National Championship in 2008.

You know... I feel for UCF. They'll probably go undefeated again, and it'll probably get them as close as 7th. Even though they probably deserve a shot at winning it all.

Fuck the strength of schedule bullshit.

Tell their conference to stop being full of dog shit teams.   They are Boise State with better weather.

For every Boise in the Fiesta Bowl there's a Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.

For every Boise in the Fiesta Bowl there's a Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.

Yet #12 UCF beat #7 Auburn just last year. You also had Boise State beating Oregon, USF beat Texas Tech, and TCU beat Stanford.

A lot of the issues revolve around the "bowl qualifiers" as far as which conferences get which bids. That's why you often see Mid-Majors vs. Mid-Majors (See 10-2 Troy vs. 9-4 North Texas or 8-4 Ohio vs. 8-4 UAB).
