UFC 226
« on: June 28, 2018, 08:21:28 AM »
Main Card (PPV)

Daniel Cormier vs Stipe Miocic- HW Championship
Derrick Lewis vs Francis Ngannou
Michael Chiesa vs Anthony Pettis
Gokhan Saki vs Khalil Rountree Jr.
Mike Perry vs Paul Felder

Prelims (FS1)

Uriah Hall vs Paulo Costa
Raphael Assuncao vs Rob Font
Curtis Millender vs Max Griffin
Lando Vanatta vs Drakkar Klose

Prelims (Fight Pass)

Dan Hooker vs Gilbert Burns
Jamie Moyle vs Emily Whitmire

First injury of the show just a week out, Yancy Medeiros has a broken rib and is out of his fight with Mike Perry. Paul Felder and Tim Means are amongst the names who've offered to step in.

Pleeeeeeease let that be the only injury. This card is a motherfucker.

Sounds like Paul Felder is the front runner to fight Perry.

After thinking about this with some more time... I think the main event ends with Stipe finishing DC early in the third round. It's just been a long time since Cormier has been a Heavyweight, he's had some horrendous weight cuts at LHW, lost quite a bit of muscle mass, is much older now, and has taken a hell of a lot more punishment since then.

I'm not going to use this as a counter argument but going over Stipe's record and it's very intriguing that not only has he never fought a wrestler on DC's level but he's never fought anybody who's main strength is wrestling. Literally nothing but grapplers and strikers.

He should be banned from the weight class. Dude had his chance and can't cut safely. Time to move up.

Looking at that UFC Tonight interview w/ Bisping was scary. I'm totally alright with Max vacating the belt and we get Ortega vs Moraes sometime early in the fall for the new champ, Max can fight the winner of Conor/Khabib.

John Morgan of MMA Junkie who is a noted UFC stooge is saying that they're considering Jeremy Stephens vs Frankie Edgar II for an interim belt on Saturday.

Sounds like the UFC wanted Ortega to fight Stephens for an interim belt and he turned it down so they tried for Edgar/Stephens but Frankie couldn't make the weight.

Isn't Marlon Moraes a 135er? Unless there's a regular featherweight named Moraes I don't know.

Card has been updated. Lando's fight has been bumped to the FS1 prelims, Perry vs Felder to the main card.

If you close your eyes for a second and forget that Max vs Ortega was ever booked that main card is still really, really fucking good. High violence potential and I'd say that at least 3, maybe 4 fights are guaranteed finishes.

Chiesa blew weight by 1.5 lbs and said that it's his last fight at LW. Pettis as of right now has not accepted the fight. Yay.

He's got a big frame, smart move. Can't really sue over a lost title shot if he can't make the weight though.

Probably explains why he was so bent too over getting pulled, he likely knew that his window at 155 was closing rapidly and the dolly incident robbed him of his last chance at a title shot.

This was echoed elsewhere but I find it pretty funny/tragic that the UFC had Vitaly Minakov on standby for the main event tomorrow and Thiago Santos for the main event tonight.....and nobody on standby at 145 in case Holloway or Brian got hurt.

I have never been a fan of DC. I really like Stipe and wanted him to win.

But I am cracking up because no one gave him a shot and DC just low key became a two division champ.

I also forgot I put money down on DC as an underdog when this fight was announced and he just won me $100. hahahaha

I thought Stipe was winning tonight. But I had no rooting interest either way. Just glad it was a fun fight.

I really don’t care about Lesnar fighting again. 0-2-1 in his last three.

LHW is a wasteland now without Jones and DC. Especially with Bader and Rumble gone.

Weird how on the TUF finale years ago it seemed like Uriah Hall was going to smash Kelvin. And now Hall is 6-7 in the UFC while the Gasman is getting a title shot.

Always like seeing Pettis win. He went from a guy who’s fights I never wanted to miss to someone I really didn’t care one way or the other if I saw his fights or not.

I have no idea what to say about the co-main. I was there live when Francis knocked the soul out of Overeem. It’s so weird that he was unwilling to do anything at all tonight. Lewis wasn’t much better. But he just won because he was willing to throw something. Maybe it’s best that Lesnar takes an undeserved title shot so they can figure out the rest of the mess in the division.

I saw Lesnar's promo and I don't think he needs Heyman as a manager if he can keep short and swear like a sailor. Honestly, he should. It's not like Vince would fine or fire him.

I missed the event due to a BBQ.  I thought Ngannou/Lewis was either going to be a one round slugfest or a 3 round disaster. I am sorry the latter came true.

I just watched the DC/Brock promos and marked the fuck out. Brock looked humongous when he got close to DC, and cut a money promo. Being the bad ass with no class is awesome, as long as you can back it up.

DC is gonna destroy him. His diagnosing of fighter weaknesses is the best in the whole sport. He said exactly how he would win and carried it out. For some reason people forgot his entire heavyweight run. This guy was the one to crack Bigfoot's chin. He put that dude on ice.

When DC doesn't cut weight, the power comes back. He is also naturally faster handspeed wise than any other big guy. I thought when he was hitting Stipe, he was messing him up. It was a matter of whether or not his chin looked good not cutting weight, and it did.

So glad that guy is finally getting the credit he deserves. He is a good dude.

I wonder if/when we see DC vacate the 205 belt. Pretty sure I recall an interview where he said if he won at HW that's where he'd stay until retirement. With Brock not eligible to fight until at least January they could definitely book Cormier to fight again at LHW but I doubt they risk him getting injured and it ruining plans for the Lesnar fight. Gustaffson/Volkan for the vacant belt makes a lot of sense but that would also make the 227 card for 3 belts and I'm not sure they'd do that.

Is it official that Brock isn't in the testing pool yet?  I think Meltz said his sources said no, but elsewhere it was stated that the testing can not be publicly admitted to by USADA.

DC also said that all he did in terms of weight for this fight was not cut weight. This is where he starts his cut from.

Barnett isn't a world bearer on his feet but he's still better than Brock.  Cormier would probably not even have to take Lesnar down unless the opportunity was right there.  Really, the only thing you have to worry about from Lesnar is being on the bottom with him because he's so big, but I'd wonder how full his tank would he against DC considering by that point it would be a couple of years since the Hunt fight.

Brock's only shot is just to catch Cormier and with his hands being the size of bricks he has enough power to KO him so it's not like the fight won't be devoid of intrigue but DC has better hands, power of his own and is a lot faster. I think he finishes Brock on the ground much like Stipe within one round, not to mention if he wants to wrestle he can taken Brock down easily.

I def. think that DC was the tougher match-up of the two for Brock (out of him and Stipie), but lets not pretend like DC has been taking down guys with wrestling pedigrees like Brock. DC struggled to get Stipe down (I don't think he even got a takedown even though he attempted). I actually think Brock will take DC down and if that happens, I have a hard time thinking DC gets to his feet.

Do I think DC can KO/TKO him? Yeah, definitely, especially after this Stipe fight. But I don't think it'll be as easy as some people are making it out to be.
