These are the same fans that cheered for Ryan Braun after he was suspended for cheating and then lied about cheating and throwing people under the bus. This isn't surprising.

What is it with baseball and eternal grudges? Joe Jackson is dust by now but that lifetime ban still beats like a hundred years ago heart.

Seems like even God is sick of watching the Orioles.  There's a downpour every inning tonight.

Daniel Poncedeleon went 7 hitless innings for St. Louis in his first big league start.

In other news, Daniel Poncedeleon is the best name ever.

Zach Wheeler apparently on the verge of being traded.  Can't wait to see the ziploc bags and fruit roll ups Mets get in return.  Hopefully they can at least land a king size Reese's peanut butter cup

If it's the kind with Reese Pieces in them then it's worth it. Those things are delicious.

The monsoon continues in Baltimore.  They were lucky to finish the game last night before the infield became a mudpit.

It's July 26 and the Phillies are in first place, 1.5 above the Braves and seven(!) above the Nationals. I was inspired to take a look at the most improved teams in Phillies history, by increase of winning percentage.

1905 (+.204): Improved from 52-100 to 83-69. A couple trades for players you've never heard of and they drafted a real shortstop. Still finished 21.5 games out of first.

1962 (+.198): Improved from 47-107 to 81-80. The '61 team is famous for losing a record 23 consecutive games. The Phils made some good acquisitions but mostly their improvement was the same players stepping up and playing better.

1929 (+.181): Improved from 43-109 to 71-82. The Phils traded Freddy Leach to the Giants for Lefty O'Doul, who hit .398. It was a one year fluke, the team collapsed to 52-102 the next season.

1885 (+.175): Improved from 39-73 to 56-54. They found a good pitcher. Amazing how that helps when two pitchers throw 85% of your innings.

1993 (+.167): Improved from 70-92 to 97-65. Multiple platoons and Daulton and Dykstra stayed healthy.

1884 (+.161): Improved from 17-81 to 39-73. Hard not to get better, honestly. They gave Harry Wright the managerial job and he started building a real team. See 1885.

2018 (-.157): Seventh most improved team in Phillies history, fourth in last 100 years.

Cole Hamels to the Cubs for low level minor league prospects

Hamels has been bad this year, but I feel more comfortable with him in the rotation than Tyler Chatwood. I'm hoping he rejuvenates his career with a new team ala Justin Verlander last year.

Five weeks ago Hamels' ERA was 3.41. I don't know what he'll do, I haven't seen him pitch more than a few times this year. But it wouldn't surprise me at all if July was a blip and he pitches well for the Cubs.

I know why managers keep their pitcher in that long, but I think the cost-benefit of having your guy throw over 130 pitches is not worth it.

The Cardinals traded Tommy Pham to the Rays for prospects. That seems to leave them with an outfield of Ozuna/Bader/Fowler, and I wonder if they intend to have Justin Williams take a starting job from Fowler (and man, does THAT contract look bad right now).

Went to Padres-Giants in San Diego last night, one of the many extra inning games of the day.  Joe Panik came back to pinch hit during the game, which I had seen he was doing rehab at AAA Sacramento earlier in the day.  Fun little read:

Hereโ€™s a scenario I donโ€™t remember seeing before.  Jake Diekman gets the win for the Rangers last night against the Diamondbacks, then gets traded to the team he beat the next day.

One of the Nationals' announcers last night proclaimed that if Bryce Harper could get his average up to .270 or so, they could have the MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year on the same team. It was the greatest example of an announcer being on crack that I've heard this season.

A couple of things to unpack. Baseball-Reference's WAR has deGrom and Nola tied at 6.9, Scherzer at 6.5. Fangraphs has deGrom well ahead and Patrick Corbin actually ahead of Aaron Nola. To be honest Fangraphs' version seems closer to reality, but they tend to weight peripherals more than I think you should for a statistic that rates performance. I think if the season ended today it would be deGrom against Scherzer for the Cy Young with Nola third.

Oddly though, Scherzer may have the edge in MVP voting. Currently he is hitting .300 which is a massive fluke, but will catch eyeballs. There aren't many elite performances by NL position players this year, so the pitchers will get serious consideration.

Now Bryce Harper. His performance yesterday raised his season WAR (Baseball-Ref's version) all the way up to 1.0. Three of his last five seasons he's been 1.5 or below. There are obvious tools there, but the inconsistency makes me a little nervous.

Rookie of the Year, that's Soto's to lose.

Ump with a horrible strike call and during the replay you see Orioles fans with the look on their faces like "yep, that's our season in a nutshell".

Boston's bullpen is probably the most obvious question mark going into the playoffs; they just don't have that reliable bridge to Kimbrel.  That and can David Price finally get his head out of his ass in October.

Occurred to me today that we could get a first round Yankees/Red Sox match up if everything goes to fruition.  Red Sox win division and have best record and Yankees win play in game.  Seems like a def. flaw in the system to have the two best teams have to meet in the first round but sports aren't perfect or even fair most of the time
