The Coaches

Atlanta = HC/DC - Kevin Coyle, OL - Pete Metzelaars, DB - Jimmy Robinson

San Diego = Mike Martz, OC - Mike DeBord, RB - Lamont Jordan, WR - Az-Zahir Hakim, DC - Larry Marmie, DB - Eric Allen

Harley's Thoughts: It's clear that this league is gonna try riding the "names" of the QBs and HCs. Everything about this screams NFL-Lite and my concerns about the coaches panned out. Too... NFL-ized outside of maybe Steve Spurrier and in order to make a league like this work, you really need some type of offensive innovation to make it truly different.

The USFL at least had Mouse Davis' Run & Shoot (which ended up being the offense of 2 teams in that league by its end) and this league you have Spurrier's Fun & Gun (which is now pretty pro-centric anyway), Erickson and Riley's Single Back Offense which is nothing new now, and Martz.

Also not sure how it'll go with it being so South-heavy. There's almost zero relatability from any football fans in the Northeast, Midwest, or Northwest really. The AFL of the 1960s was perfect because it had a widespread geographic imprint, had offenses that were ridiculously vertical and pass heavy for the era in a complete contrast to the NFL, and they took pride in being that contrast to the NFL itself.

If this didn't have such a CBS/NFL push behind it, this would scream XFL wannabe without the uniqueness of that and I think Vince's new league will at least (again) be unique enough to offset this league.

BUMP: Doing some digging and Hal Mumme left Memphis as OC which screams that Singletary didn't want to buy into the offense completely. Worth noting that some of the others on the staff include QB Coach David Lee (architect behind the Wildcat explosion of the late 00's) and DC Dennis Thurman.

Here are some of the notable QB names: Aaron Murray (Atlanta - Protected), Garrett Gilbert (Orlando), John Wolford (MY DAWG!!! Arizona), Christian Hackenberg (Memphis), Logan Woodside (San Antonio), Scott Tolzien (Birmingham), and Zach Mettenberger (Memphis)

This reads like a list of ex-NFL Busts and good College QBs who couldn't even make it onto an NFL practice squad (guys like Blake Sims, Marquise Williams, and Matt Linehan)

I might go to the home opener of the San Diego Fleet. I really miss Jack Murphy/Qualcomm/SDCCU Stadium. Their home games start at 5PM, which I'm not a fan of. Hopefully the games are under three hours.

Looks like Orlando Apollos tickets start around $20 with every game except the closer against Birmingham on Saturday night at 8PM.  I might consider this, but I'm going to watch on television first and see how I like the product.  I wouldn't be able to go until March anyways.

It does, but there are definitely some aspects of it that I like.  The pace is good.  Limited commercials.  Fewer flags than the NFL.  And I like touches like having the replay booth mic'd.

Definitely better than the old XFL at least.

The AAF reached out to Colin Kaepernick and Tim Tebow, but both declined.  Tebow wants to continue playing baseball and Kaepernick said he wouldn't consider playing football again for less than $20 million a year.

Very boring 2 PM game between Salt Lake and Birmingham. If this 2nd week doesn't start getting offenses going, I can see people quickly tuning out and moving on. It's not even entertaining in a bad college football way.

It also doesn't help at all that there's been almost no penalties being called. It's one thing to let players play but no flags just leads to shitty football where receivers don't get separation, holding gets notoriously bad on both sides of the ball, and teams struggle to move the ball down the field on their own consistently.

EDIT: Two blatant penalties (holding and a horse collar via dreads pulldown) don't get called. LOL. I'm done with this league since they clearly are worrying more about "pace" than actually calling penalties properly.

Caught the highlights on Youtube but that's the way I'll go at most. Refusing to watch any more full games. Those two missed calls from the Birmingham? game were just so egregiously bad from a competency standpoint, even if the refs are getting used to the pacing/play. Your basic Sun Belt/AAC College Football referees would've called those 9/10 times.

And the league looks like they are in danger of shutting down already, having had to have been bailed out to the tune of $250 million by the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Memphis got their shit together a little in the second half, but their defense couldn't bring anyone down on first contact.

Rooting for Atlanta to get their first win since Memphis came up short last night! They're sort of hanging with 2-0 Birmingham but NARD DAWG turned the ball over and it could become a second rout out of three games played for the Legends.

Hey, a stop in the red zone! There's life yet!

I enjoy the league, but a large part of that is watching the Apollos because Spurrier is just dicking around with the offensive playcalling. The fact that they apparently have the only competent WRs in the league is helping a ton.

Snow game tonight and I'm surprised to see the Apollos wearing alternate uniforms (blue jerseys instead of their usual white).  I was sure that I had read that the teams only had one set of uniforms.

The crazy bit is that Orlando and Birmingham were undefeated going into Week 4. Now, in Week 5, Orlando treats Birmingham like some jobbers.

Johnny Football had a TD throw called back on OPI. Then he throws a pick at the goal line just before getting whacked and knocked out on the play. This AAF has been fun.

Memphis proceeded to take the league-best Apollos to the limit in a rain game, where the conditions led to a bobbled punt snap and assured Orlando yet another fuckin' win. Samurai Mike and an assistant got separate Unsportsmanlike penalties at the most crucial time of the game for being on the field during live play!

There just isn't a big enough audience for spring football.  Didn't help that I don't get either NFL Network or CBS Sports Network so I couldn't watch like 90% of the games.

I liked some of it but outside of Steve Spurrier's team, the offenses and league itself was just so boring to watch. The ratings didn't seem that bad but when you're trying to tout your league as a "NFL development" league... that's a recipe for disaster IMO because we already have an NFL. Nobody wants to watch a Spring NFL-Lite Wannabe league when MLB's starting up, NHL and NBA Playoffs are around the corner, and NFL pre-season is starting up in August.

It'd be like trying to televise AAA or AA as a legitimate professional league on the same level as MLB or the G-League (?) as the equivalent of the NBA. Fans will often see right through it.

Apparently the guy who paid all that money to have the biggest say, did it for some app or something. He wasn't really trying to get the AAF itself, just that app. Now that he has it, he closed up shop.

Apparently, he felt it was worth the 70 million (out of however much he said he would pay) to get it.

It always seemed weird when Dundon signed on to be honest. And when the NFLPA blew off his attempts to try and get their players to sustain long term plans, I knew that was a bad omen for the league itself.

http://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/why-is-the-aaf-folding-who-to-blame-alliance-of-american-football/17fmqg4k8rkqp1v6563c4t8kbr

According to Pro Football Talk, which cited a source, "Dundon signed on to kick the tires. Once he realized how expensive it was to own and operate a sports league, he initially tried to cut costs. But that resulted in a cutting of functionality. He then pinned the league’s future to a deal with the NFL for permission to borrow its bottom-of-roster players."
