TWIW 12/24-12/30: Another Year Down
« on: December 24, 2018, 08:45:40 AM »
Raw and SD are pre-taped. One sounds bad one sounds good. No points for guessing which is which.

Here are Raw spoilers if you want to skip the BS https://www.f4wonline.com/wwe-news/wwe-raw-spoilers-tonight-two-title-matches-273071

I'm going to go have a nap because I've been marathoning Hobbit/LOTR extended editions like the holidays are meant to be spent.

Maybe the pre taped holiday show that nobody will watch isn't the best place for an important announcement like women's tag titles, but what do I know?

I guess that's what Trish and Lita's role is for WM. They'll probably job to Sasha and Bayley in the tournament finals.

Heh. I was just about to ask whether the announcement meant that the Sasha/Bayley feud they've been teasing for, like, a year, was now going to happen before or after they won the tag titles?

They will have an “amazing” tag title run where one of them gets jealous of the other success and then the mega bitches can explode.

House show crowd in Chicago during their biggest live event week of the year. WWE is dead. Focusing the company on women was a bold strategy that isn't working and it's killing the company.

Skimming through some tweets, it sounds like a ton of people left at the intermission because they didn’t realize the show wasn’t over and the main event hadn’t been announced. I’m at least a little skeptical of this because 1. How can THAT many people not realize there’s an intermission? And 2. There’s a cage hanging above the ring. Of course there is going to be a match that uses it!

Hard to tell for sure with the house lights dimmed, but it did look a little better earlier in the night, at least.

Also, according to the results posted online the first segment of the show was MizTV setting up the main event cage match between Bryan, Ali, and Miz.  So it is hard to buy people thinking the show was over.

That said, I think 909 is overstating things when it comes to the women being the cause.  They aren't the focus of the company.  On Smackdown (which this was), Daniel Bryan gets far more screentime and attention than anybody.  And on RAW, Brock Lesnar has been treated as the biggest deal for years and continues to be.

Honestly I don't think you can blame any individual(s). I think a lot the reason attendance and other metrics are so down is because wwe trolled their audience too much since around 2013/2014 and it's finally caught up to them.  When someone new got over the fans were basically told they were stupid for liking them and things always went back to the same.  They seem to be finally realizing this now with Becky and I guess Bryan but the damage has been done.  They would be in pretty big trouble without the tv rights deals but....

A house show around Xmas doesn't do well? You don't say...

The post-Christmas week is historically their biggest house show week of the year. That's why they ran MSG and Chicago last night.

From what I've been reading they did the cage match then did an intermission before the Charlotte/Becky/Asuka main event, so it was reasonable for the fans to believe the show was over. However all the pictures I've seen from the Chicago event make the crowd look pretty sparse.

Per Meltzer on WOR, Chicago did about 6,000 and MSG did 11,000. They also didn't announce a return date for MSG.

Yes, Christmas week is WWE's biggest house show tour of the year money wise.  The talent love it because it means bigger paydays obvs. so it has to be alarming if crowds are down this time of year.  Just last year they did great business on this tour with Cena v Reigns main eventing the Raw shows

I hadn't even realized they were pre-taping Raw again https://www.f4wonline.com/wwe-results/wwe-raw-tv-taping-spoilers-steel-cage-match-273371

Really makes them announcing the "new direction" beforehand seem even dumber. I didn't watch last week and I won't watch this one either. It would have made far more sense to make the announcement in the new year and even do it with a new look set and graphics and really go all out.

The spoilers also sound like the same old shit. There was no new direction at all, USA just forced Vince to be on TV and the ratings are going in the tank regardless of that.

oh yeah, I don't think anyone realistically thought they were going to do anything but if they WERE that's what they should have done and that's what USA should have had them do. Raw is pretty important to USA ratings wise even with it's huge deterioration so you'd think they'd be taking a more active hand to try and stop the slide. If it keeps getting worse there's got to be a point where they demand major changes in how the company is doing business if they want to keep their timeslot.

Step 1: Bring back pyro. I feel like from a mystique and mood setting factor, it is worth the expense.

Plus my friend is one of the best in the business and WWE is costing him work by not running pyro.

I don't know if you saw after our conversation the other day, but...

https://www.pwtorch.com/site/2018/12/28/wwe-smackdown-rating-christmas-night-edition-draws-all-time-lowest-rating-but-still-beats-raw-rating-drops-below-2-million-viewers-again/

Quote
The Christmas night edition of WWE Smackdown (Not) Live drew a 1.24 rating, beating Raw’s 1.22 Christmas Eve edition. Viewership dipped below 2 million, 1.904 to be exact. It’s the third week out of the last four that dipped below two million, something that hadn’t happened with Smackdown viewership prior.

So the SD rating was higher than Raw EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ON CHRISTMAS.

It's so damn easy if they were hyping up a "new direction". Instead of doing it right before the holidays, wait until the first Raw of the new year.

At the tapings they announced Alexa is getting her own talk show segment "Moment of Bliss". Man they are terrified of her being off tv.  Remember when past talent had concussion issues, even the main eventers, they were taken off tv but now they are scrambling for ideas to keep Alexa in the mix.  They must love her.

Her first guest is Ronda

I feel like their insistence on her being on TV so much is at least a mitigating factor for why she's unable to wrestle in the first place.

Alexa's biggest strength is her charisma and mic skills so I'm not surprised at all they want to transition her to a speaking role as soon as possible if she can't be an in-ring competitor.  If they didn't get rid of GMs she probably was going to replace Corbin as RAW GM.  She'd be a great manager for someone like Lars.

I think they're just taking their time with her and she's such a great talker they're making use of her that way. They also have so many women in other feuds and angles right now there isn't a real need to rush her back.

I don't think she is done-done but from the little that comes out but they are definitely being extra cautious.  I heard something along the way that indicated she maybe rushed back last time she was hurt and now everyone is taking more precautions.  I swear I heard she was back in the ring at the PC soon and getting close.  That was fairly recent as I think when I saw that I assumed she may be back in time to be in the Rumble match.

I'm actually surprised people feel Alexa is good on the mic. I've always found her to come across over rehearsed. Like how a character on a sitcom would play an actor who is bad at acting.

Bliss is a kick to watch, she just is a perfect example of that generation of talent who probably can't talk without a script. She's an awesome heel, and her not corrupting Braun into being her personal killing machine only to break his heart for Lars, and make him snap into being cool again.

But for real, she's the best non-Irish promo in the women's division and probably top five on Raw, last I watched (admittedly a while ago).

Bliss is the perfect heel. I'm not the first to point this out but she was so generically bleh in her first persona. Cute as a damn button but as far as the E in WWE goes, nothing.

I absolutely love her heel work. Rehearsed or not, she's got great timing. Even when you know the turn is coming in her fake face promos of the past year, it was so well executed. I don't want to overstate and say she's my favorite, but I sure do enjoy her segments.

....and that's not even pointing out that she's got a pet pig in real life (I love pigs) and I think the real life person is cool as hell.

It’s awesome she doesn’t live the gimmick as well. When I met her and DB before summerslam she was openly warm and super friendly.
