2019 MOTY Candidates/Recommend A Match
« on: January 01, 2019, 07:16:59 AM »
Just like the last two years, this thread is for people to put what they think are the best matches of the year, even if you think the MOTY already happened if something is really damn great you should still toss it in here for other people to check out. 1/2 Daisuke Sekimoto Vs Ryoto Hama
1/3 AJPW Triple Crown - Kento Miyahara vs. KAI

1/15- Rey Vs Andrade
1/22- Rey Vs Andrade 2/3 Falls

Already off to a good start

1/3/19 - AJPW Triple Crown - Kento Miyahara vs. KAI

Way better than I would have expected given KAI's tendency to run lukewarm-to-cold in singles matches, but he really brought it for this match and actually managed to elicit good crowd support and chants during the match

Spoiler: show
and even though he lost I hope KAI can parlay that into a revival of his career this year

Absolutely.

I thought Jericho/Naito was also strong as was Osperay/Ibushi.

1/22 Rey Vs Andrade 2/3 falls

even with the non-finish this was tremendous and we had rey hit his finish right before the run-in. This was just all action and go go go. Rey pulled everything out and then he was innovating new shit I've never seen before.

1/2 Daisuke Sekimoto Vs Ryoto Hama

STRONG VS FAT! The Ultimate Battle! These guys have had a lot of fun encounters in singles (and tags) and this is a really great one. Hama just gets fatter and fatter it seems like but it somehow hasn't hurt his mobility or ability to take a bump yet. He's got a great array of fat-man spots and Sekimoto dishes out the pain and has some great strength spots.

There's already been a couple other matches I've watched from Sekimoto that were borderline worthy of this thread so he's off to a great start.

Sekimoto the real MVP of January, as I would also add to that

1/13 - AJPW Tag Titles - Violent Giants (c) vs. Strong BJ

Strong BJ against All-Japan is always good for a fun beefy hossfest (notably their 2016 feud with The Big Guns) and this match was more of that same goodness.

Side note: even though it was for the All-Japan titles, the match occurred under the BJW banner so it's not on AJPWtv, have to watch it on Real Hero or similar site.

2/11 Jay White Vs Tanahashi
I don't think its a full MOTY but it's obviously super notable.

2/12- SD Men's Gauntlet
Kofi did a fantastic job here.

SANADA vs Suzuki from Feb. 2
I expected a fantastic match and it still was above my expectations. SANADA could be a star if pushed right.

Just great storytelling. The latter half of the male one is amazing.

Going with Gargano/Ricochet as the best so far.

The last 15 minutes of the men's elimination chamber were incredible, some of the best pro wrestling I've watched in a long time. The early parts of the match not quite as much though.

I gotta watch PAC Vs KZY still but I'd probably take one of the Sekimoto matches or KAI/Miyahara. Men's Elimination chamber was insanely great and I think the early part while not at the level of the end still left the match near the level of stuff Meltzer has given 5 stars. I wouldn't go that far but it was close.

The Daniel/Kofi stuff was five stars and I have basically no doubt they could have a match as good as that. Rest was like ***1/2 so gotta meet in the middle somewhere.

I don't remember watching any wrestling on TV for a while that left me feeling so emotionally invested in the outcome.

2/10- PAC Vs Kzy

I once again don't get Dragon Gate putting Kzy in the spot of losing in an early Dream Gate shot and having his momentum brought to a crashing halt. He should have been the guy to dethrone PAC. That said this is a fun match although I liked Kzy's dream gate shot against Mochizuki last year more probably.

Real fun title defence by Kaito here. I'm digging NOAH's youth movement a ton and I hope the new owner's don't mess things up.

2/22 ZSJ vs Shota Umino ROH/NJPW Honor Rising

It's weird to have a Young Lion match here, but Shota looked like a million dollars here. The fans were popping for him like he was Okada. ZSJ worked so well with him here. What a match!

2/27 Keith Lee vs Dominik Dijakovic NXT TV

Both guys finally get to show what they can do and makes you want a rematch but with both of them destroying a scale model of New York in the process.

3/6 NXT TV Dusty Classic 1st Round matches:

Ricochet and Aleister Black vs. Fabian Eichner and Marcel Bartel
#DIY vs. O'Reilly and Fish

That entire episode is worth watching, honestly, but those two matches stood out.

Shota Umino vs Tanahashi: Night 3 New Japan Cup

There was 0% chance that Umino was winning, but everyone thought he was going to pull out the upset. This match was perfectly built and told an amazing story.

Sustained heat on a Smackdown for almost an hour and smart booking the whole time? You never see that.

Pretty much 15 minutes of straight action with five of the best guys in the company.  Can't complain about that.

3/6 Liger Vs Ishimori
Liger is so fucking great still and it's also noteworthy as maybe(?) his last title match and the last match before his retirement announcement.

3/23 NJ Cup Semis SANADA Vs Tanahashi
Tana works as the vet coming up with the counters for the younger more athletic man and they also both get in a lot of callbacks to the fact they're both from the same background of Fujinami/Mutoh proteges.

3/24 NJ Cup Finals SANADA Vs Okada
They build this one a bit slowly but the finishing stretch is crazy and the story of Okada doing everything he possibly can to stop SANADA from getting that Moonsault no matter what is great.
