Gene was THE person telling me everything I knew about WWF in 1984/1985 and then continued to get the characters and angles over to me through my childhood. I have compared every talking head in the industry to him at some point.

RIP Gene
Oh Dandy...you came and you gave without taking!

I met Gene at C2E2 2 or 3 years ago (in Chicago). He was very nice and didn't even charge me.

Mean Gene lived a long, full life of boozing, skirt chasing, drugs and being the life of the party. I think he went with no regrets  :)

I'm a little disappointed that his name is in the subject line. That's not what he would've wanted.

RIP Mean Gene. The go to backstage interviewer for me and a guy who added some legitimacy while being a great foil to the wrestlers he was interviewing without mugging for the camera from them.

He's such a great straight man to so many and had incredible comic timing. He had chemistry with everyone. I really love him and Macho Man interacting off each other at Halloween Havoc 95 for some reason. Mean Gene on commentary is kind of a guilty pleasure as well. There will never be another Mean Gene Okerlund.

RIP

I always forget how old he was. He seemed like eternally in his late 40s.

He was one of the few people in pro wrestling that always exuded class. Even when Vince Russo tried to make him a sex pervert in '00 WCW.

RIP.  WWE has never adequately replaced him as lead interviewer.  This seems to be getting coverage in the mainstream media as well, which goes to show how much impact he had.

Best wrestling interviewer ever. He can never be replaced, no matter how hard anyone tries. The man is synonymous with a microphone.

RIP Mean Gene.

Yeah, people whom I'd never figure to mention his passing were doing so today in texts and on Facebook.  R.I.P., Mean Gene.

Without him Hulk Hogan would never have been able to start a promo.
