Reviews and critical reception aside, you can't deny that Aquaman is a big hit for DC. That's impressive. I also like that Bohemian Rhapsody is still holding on but with the Golden Globes being this weekend, I guess people are scrambling to see all the nominees before the event.

Guess I'll post this here.  Wow, "A Star is Born" was shut out of all the major awards at the Golden Globes.  Their only win was best song.  Was this expected?  I don't really pay attention to show biz news like I used to but I kept hearing how they were going to clean up during awards season.

But then the Globes always seem to have weird results

It suffered from coming out too early in the year. It had a lot of backing, but so much has come out since it's release that it started to lose steam.

Good to see Escape Room perform well. It was a packed theater of mostly younger folks when I saw it on Saturday. Great twists and turns in that one, and I hope it does well enough to warrant a sequel as it could easily be built as a franchise. It felt a lot like Saw but without the gore.

I loved the InTouchables and was intrigued when I first read about The Keep years ago but I don't know, something didn't sit right with me in the trailer. I'll check it out eventually but I'm in really no rush.

"Replicas" was actually meant to be released in 2017, but ended up being pushed back. Also, I haven't seen anything for it outside of commercials as nobody involved has done any promotion for it. At least Keanu can look forward to "John Wick 3" and "Toy Story 4" later this year.

No shock that Replicas was held back a few years. It totally gave that vibe of probably largish budget studio flick that nobody wanted after the hot garbage that was filmed and fell into post-production hell because it was so overtly terrible. There was a ton of low-rent companies that took up distribution of it so that was the first sign of bad for me.  No shock is also bombed as a handful of others were at the Friday matinee, and 3 of them left before it was done!

The Upside was one that got delayed almost an entire year as well (not counting for it being shown at a 2017 festival).  I assumed it had to be a flawed film that was sat on for a while as it looks like something that would try to pander for award season.

Looking it up, the Development section of the Wikipedia page shows there was a lot going on

Quote
In July 2011, in addition to acquiring distribution rights in English-speaking countries, Scandinavian countries and China, The Weinstein Company acquired the rights to remake The Intouchables in English.[7] In June 2012, Paul Feig was slated to direct and write the script, with Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx and Idris Elba eyed for the role of Dell, Colin Firth in talks for Phillip, and Jessica Chastain and Michelle Williams were considered for a female lead.[8]

By March 2013, Feig dropped out of directing, with Tom Shadyac in talks to replace him, and Chris Tucker was in consideration for Dell.[9] In October 2014, Kevin Hart was cast as Dell, with Firth still attached as Phillip.[10]

In March 2016, it was announced that Bryan Cranston was cast as Phillip, replacing Firth. Simon Curtis was to direct Cranston and Hart from a screenplay written by Feig.[11] By August 2016, Curtis dropped out of directing. Neil Burger was announced as his replacement.[12] A script by Jon Hartmere will be used rather than Feig's work.[13]

Also, supposedly the year delayed was tied to the Weinstein scandal.

I was expecting a little more for Glass. I think with the bad word of mouth and reviews, it probably won't have the legs that Split had either. Still, a hit with the small budget it had though.

Here's some target numbers for Glass, curious what it could hit based on the word of mouth/reviews. I ended up cancelling my ticket because it's been so divisive. All adjusted for 2019 Ticket Prices. I didn't include The Sixth Sense or Signs because both made over $340 Million adjusted and I don't think Glass even sniffs that.

The Village (2004) = $162,377,500
Unbreakable (2000) = $155,097,300
Split (2017) = $138,123,100
The Happening (2008) = $79,330,900
The Visit (2015) = $68,699,900
Lady In the Water (2006) = $57,004,300

I could see it possibly finishing closer to The Happening (say around $80-85 Million) by the end of its run depending on how much the reviews hurt it especially given its rather soft opening when not up against much competition. It's still gonna make a good profit, mostly tied to its low production budget, but it must still be a bit of a blow to Universal.

I think it won't have legs due to how boring it is. I think domestically it'll finish around 85 million.

Interesting to see The Favourite actually get a boost by 5 spots. Also cool to see Dragon Ball Super: Broly almost making $30 Million. It's already 3rd amongst Anime films in domestic gross right behind Pokemon: The First Movie and Pokemon 2000.

Sony has to be making an absolute killing on those cheap $6-$10 Mill horror movies that end up grossing like 10x its budget on the low end. Even shitty fare like Truth or Dare from Universal grossed $95.3 Million worldwide off a $3.5 Million budget.

Lego Movie 2 only opened with 8 million Friday and is expected to only do around 31 million for the weekend. The first one made 69 million opening weekend. Wow, that's way less than I was expecting considering how well reviewed it is and how big the first one was. I wonder what happened.

That's pretty surprising.  Not sure how the marketing went as I forgot it was this soon until I saw an ad the other night.  Though I did see a big display of the toys in WalMart yesterday.

Maybe it is franchise fatigue too.  I really enjoyed the first one and Batman was solid but that Ninjago was awful.  Not sure how that impacted people willing to bring their kids out for a $60 night out.

The Kid Who Would Be King looks like it'll bomb despite getting good reviews. It looked decent but most King Arthur-esque movies tend to struggle in finding the right market, even kids movie versions. Glad to see Escape Room doing well as it's made about $108 Million worldwide thus far. Also The Prodigy has already made back its budget domestically although I don't think it'll have much in the way of legs with the other movies premiering soon.

"Cold Pursuit" was already projected to make $10-15 million, so outside of the controversy surrounding Neeson I don't see the studio sweating it. "Lego Movie 2" actually made a less than the first on did in it's first weekend ($69,050,279) so unless it can pick up steam or hang in there for a while, it might be considered a bomb. It's gonna need it ("Happy Death Day 2 You" and "Aelita" (which I have a feeling will end up bombing) is next week, "How to Train Your Dragon" is the week after and 2 weeks after that is "Captain Marvel")

When I first saw the trailer for "The Prodigy", I thought it would be a Blumhouse production, but it's actually from XYZ Films (whose credits include "The Raid" movies, "The Night Comes for Us", "Mandy" and "Brawl in Cell Block 99" among others). I think this is their first movie outside of "The Raid" movies to get a wide release.

Feels like Alita did a little soft but then again, so did the weekend itself. Hoping Happy Death Day 2U has some legs and makes a fair bit of money but it opening so low, I'm not holding my breath there.

Will Alita gain back the high end production/promotion costs? I heard its close to 200 million, so the first week's results had to be a letdown. I hope it has a good run as I'd actually welcome a sequel and really enjoyed this one, mostly because it was incredibly immersive with the 3D in the IMAX format. This delivered tenfold in that respect. Some of the characters (the main male role particularly) were particularly drab and not fleshed out, but that's a small complaint as I was more involved in this one for the effects and action sequences, which were insane.

I'd highly suggest anyone who seeks this film out see it ONLY in 3D as this is some of the best 3D I've seen in a mainstream film in years, even eclipsing the usual strong DC and Marvel 3D ones.

I've heard this really pops in the Dolby 3D format, which is starting to roll out more and more across the country, particularly in AMC theaters.

I'm more impressed at Alita's domestic take in that it will probably end up around $85 Million by the end of its run considering it's already made $382 Million worldwide ($113 in China alone) where it was expected to do really well anyways.

"Alita" was predicted to be a bomb in the US for a while, what with having it's date pushed back more than once. That said, it also seems to be the kind of movie that the audiences that saw it seem to like it more than critics, so it will probably do better on video and on demand.

Captain Marvel...I feel like maybe (and that's a maybe) outside of the "Ghostbusters" reboot, it might be time for studios to not worry so much about internet trolls, or at least as far as box office is concerned. Sure, "Solo" bombed but that's likely because little about it looked exciting, and other attempts at sabotaging movies success (the other new "Star Wars" movies, "Oceans 8", "Black Panther" and now "Captain Marvel") failed in the end. Besides, general audiences don't really care about their opinions, so from a financial standpoint why waste energy on them?

I feel I should clarify that studios and others should do something about trolls relentlessly harassing people, but outside of that who cares?

I had read this morning about the whole "Brie Larson doesn't want white men seeing this movie" for the first time this morning and thought the whole thing was so stupid.

A few hours later, I called a buddy of mine that is going on a guys trip with me next week to talk details of getting on the road.  I told him I enjoyed the movie and he told me how this weird guy that is like twenty years our senior with a whole comic book room in his house is protesting seeing it being of Larson's comments.  So I had to clear up that nonsense with him.  Seems like the trolls added fuel to the fire of that thing when guys like this are holding out.

Think in the long run, it will be fine.  I think as others stated in their review threads and in the thread for the movie, it is solid.  Not Marvel's best fare but not the weakest and even the weakest Marvel films, although cookie cutter, still tend to be better than most average films.  May be something where little girls pick the business up as time goes on.  I know the school age kids around me will be heading to spring break the next week, so it could be in some parts of the country the business is dragging just due to the time of release too.

Also, no idea what the Alita Challenge Slim mentioned was but that movie just screamed to me of a movie that tanks here but does huge overseas, which seemingly happened.

The more people try to protest these movies the better they generally do, so keep it up. The bad ones like "Solo" will fail on their own merits.

I believe it's where snowflake white men are telling people to go see Alita instead of Marvel, sort of like crazy right wing fanatic James Wods.

That's the one: a bunch of salty dudebros intentionally misrepresented some comments that Brie Larson made about male critics, so in addition to spamming Rotten Tomatoes with negative reviews, they decided to launch a campaign to "tank" Captain Marvel on opening weekend, by trying to get people to go see Alita: Battle Angel instead.

"Hotel Mumbai" is also out next week.

Looking forward to "Dragged Across Concrete" (Zahler's prior directorial efforts are great, and I really enjoyed two of the novels he's written) but man oh man I have a feeling some people are gonna be pissed off at it's existence (it's Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn playing racist cops for one thing, and that "Puppet Master" reboot he wrote made me feel a bit queasy) I totally get it if others look at it and go "nah"

That seems like an hugely underwhelming number for Dumbo. Especially when you stack it up with Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty And The Beast, and some of the other live action Disney movie.

That movie just looked bad and do most people really have a huge nostalgic feeling for Dumbo compared to other movies? I think it's really suffered because of the Jim Crows and other things. I remember as a kid finding it a really sad movie.

Just read my review. It didn't do as well because it's on the lower end of Disney properties, but speaking as someone who went to Disneyland around 20 times when I was a kid, that didn't matter and I went to see it anyway.

Now that being said, the movie did $116 million worldwide this weekend.

So many of the trailers felt like it was Dumbo mashed up with Big Fish because, you know, Burton.

I'm sure I will get to it eventually, maybe even in the theatres, but I personally didn't feel any rush.

I mean, the trailers made it look like the movie was centering human characters, as opposed to, well, Dumbo. Who's signing up to watch that?
