I thought all the live action disney stuff looked like shit and they were all massively successful, so I figured this would be too.

"Unplanned" is a faith based anti-abortion movie, so I expect my theater to get it probably next week. They always get stuff like this.

Next week should be interesting, with "Shazam" and "Pet Sematary" coming out, and both (so far) getting mostly good reviews.

That seems like an hugely underwhelming number for Dumbo. Especially when you stack it up with Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty And The Beast, and some of the other live action Disney movie.

I mean, the trailers made it look like the movie was centering human characters, as opposed to, well, Dumbo. Who's signing up to watch that?

I read a review that said Dumbo ends up feeling like a secondary character, and the trailers made the whole enterprise look unnecessary. I'm wouldn't be surprised if a growing number of movie goers are growing tired of Disney remaking it's old properties. That "Aladdin" movie ain't looking too good.

Aladdin is tracking for big box office success though.  I read concern about Dumbo weeks ago.  Have a feeling this will be the kickstart to the "return" of Will Smith, as this and Bad Boys gets him more in stuff people want to see him in than most of recent projects.

Aladdin doesn't look bad from the long preview I saw yesterday, except that they made Jafar into a twink when the role should have been given to an older actor.

And it's from Pure Flix, who are just the worst. AVClub called it an abortion about abortion, which sounds about right.
I want Jimmy Fallon to be dead. That doesn't make me a bad person.

All I know about Aladdin is blue Will Smith. The Lion King from previews looks great. Jungle Book was fine but nothing special aside from the CGI which was fucking amazing.

I saw something praising Dumbo as Burton's best film in over a decade.  I tried to think what he even did in the last ten years.  The competition?

Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, Frankenweenie, Big Eyes and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

I haven't seen a couple of those but of the ones I have and what I know of the ones I haven't, it doesn't seem like much of a feat

Dumbo is one of my favorite Disney movies. That, Pete's Dragon and Robin Hood (the cartoon), I used to watch whenever I was home from elementary school due to being sick or breaks. I had no interest in this new version, not because it would "ruin my childhood" but the trailers did nothing to interest me.

I just don't see the point of a Dumbo remake that isn't about Dumbo. Also, I can't get into a Dumbo movie without the racist crows (shout out to CWM for calling them the "Jim Crows").

This is the lowest Easter Weekend box office since Miss Congeniality 2 won a low earning weekend when it opened in 2005.

It might as well be this years "Point Break" remake (or at least as for now) in that it's a reboot that nobody really wanted or asked for. Every time I mentioned it to somebody, they would talk about how pointless it was. The fact that it looked terrible and got terrible reviews didn't help, and while the other "Hellboy" movies are beloved, they weren't really huge box office hits.

Both movies have massive cult followings. For a lot of people, those films are their intro to del Toro. I thought they were perfectly fine even though I haven't watched either in over a decade. I had no desire to see this one despite liking David Harbour enough.

I really enjoyed the first one though I only watched it once. I never saw the Golden Army but I've heard multiple people declare it the best comic book movie ever made.

I just remember The Golden Army came out the week before The Dark Knight so it had no chance at the box office and almost no one saw it (in theaters).

I swear I heard people didn’t find the old Hellboy movies faithful enough, which was part of why this was made.  Like the people who love The Mask - it has a good following but there’s another contingent that feel it needs to be remade closer to the source material.

It's near the top of my list for favorite movies based on comics. But I don't read comics so it doesn't matter to me if it's close to the source material. The Crow is my favorite movie based on a comic, though.

As I always try to do before checking out a reboot, I peeped the Del Toro Hellboy films before going to the reboot, and I thought at least the first one held up pretty damn well. The Golden Army.....ehhh.....I thought it was a huge step down from the original film but to each their own.

The reboot was certainly showcasing an obvious issue in production on this one as it was a really messy narrative that had one of the worst flows for a comic film in years. You could tell the producers and director were fighting as there wasn't a cohesiveness here that should have been. Was it a terrible film? Not really, but it was quite dull and uninspiring. There was a strong jump in gore in this one versus the Del Toro films, which I guess was an homage to the original comic? Who knows.

Personally, I think they should have gotten Del Toro in for the third film, and even if the budget would have jumped, I think his notoriety would have sold it, as well as the success critically on a certain level of his other films including the Hellboy franchise. I would have much rather have seen the old characters return for sure, including Perlman. Even though he's much older now, I liked his Hellboy persona much more than Harbour.

Hmm, just thinking about it now, was there ever a time when two Marvel flicks were released into theaters concurrent with each other? I knew Captain Marvel would get a slight bump due to Endgame's opening weekend but damn.

What was Pet Semetery's budget?

$21 million, so it will be fine.

Also, some movie that came out this week (I forgot what it's called) Made 1.2 Billion Globally.

Probably helped that Panther was still in theaters at least a couple of months after it hit home video.

Big budget comedies are dead at the box office. Long Shot had really good reviews and still could only pull a 10 million opening. I thought it was stupid to open it the week after The Avengers.

Long Shot looks interesting to me but seems like it would’ve fared better getting released a different time of year.  Something had to get released but I am guessing even with a couple big things next week (Pickachu and The Hustle), I’d still assume it takes a month to take down Avengers.

Kind of surprised Uglydolls managed to open as well as it did considering I basically saw 1 trailer and heard almost nothing else about the movie since.

The theatre near me that isn’t a big chain tends to play a lot of the same trailer over and over, sometimes for the most random movies.  Like, remember The Boy from a few years back?  They did that with Ugly Dolls which just looked dumb and not to my taste originally but just was painfully annoying the more I saw it advertised.

If I were a studio, I'd become a Hammer Films type horror distributor and just ship out movies for $3-$10 Million and watch them make in 4-6x Profit. One could argue this as the Blumhouse model initially but they've seemed to be branching out a bit movie wise.

The Hustle opened a little higher than Long Shot but not much. Comedy is dead and there's only one man that can save it.

Gonna start throwing some projections in here for my own amusement. These are purely guess work based off of trailer reactions in theater as I have heard at least 20 audiences react to these by now.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters - $80m and $250m worldwide. Closes with $140m here and $700m worldwide.

Rocketman - $35m and $60m worldwide. Closes with $110m here and $300m worldwide. I think this story will have legs, these music movies always perform, but this one is rated R and Elton John isn't big like Queen. Hence the lower totals.

Ma - $16m here, no worldwide prediction cause its been rolled out on a different schedule. I don't know what to make of this one but I'll guess it closes around $55m. The reactions I hear in theaters are more of people thinking this is goofy than anything else.

Elton John is probably a bigger name in the U.S. than Queen.

That's true, I was thinking more worldwide, but this movie is...very rated R and has gay sex scenes. I don't think people would take their kids to it like they did Bohemian Rhapsody, that's why I'm guessing lower. I wouldn't really be surprised though.

Yeah, definitely agree there.

Props to Elton for shooting down the PG-13 rating, though.  I believe his reply was something to the effect of "I didn't live a PG-13 life,"

I'm kind of sad Booksmart didn't do a little better but it was marketed all wrong. They made it look like a Lady Bird/Love Simon type movie and it's more of a Superbad/Blockers type of thing.

All the commercials I saw called it GIRL SUPERBAD

I kinda dumbly assumed that the first time I saw the preview knowing that was Jonah Hill’s sister

Yeah, Booksmart is most definitely marketed as a female Superbad. I didn't get a Lady Bird-like vibe at all while watching the trailer and commercials.

Lol I think I way overshot on this one's overall numbers. $49m here and $130m foreign total, so $179m worldwide. The budget was apparently $200 million before promotion and I'm having a hard time seeing how this gets the $600m that it would need to turn even a small profit.

Rocketman - $35m and $60m worldwide. Closes with $110m here and $300m worldwide. I think this story will have legs, these music movies always perform, but this one is rated R and Elton John isn't big like Queen. Hence the lower totals.

I overshot on this one as well. $23,000,000 and $54m overall, so I was close in one regard at least. The thing is that I'm also guessing on these without seeing the movie beforehand so it makes things more fun for me. I actually don't know if this has legs, but I really liked it. The way it ends is not what people are used to from these kinds of films. It's also so gay that apparently it's getting censored.

Ma - $16m here, no worldwide prediction cause its been rolled out on a different schedule. I don't know what to make of this one but I'll guess it closes around $55m. The reactions I hear in theaters are more of people thinking this is goofy than anything else.

Still haven't seen this one but this was a good call. Did $18m.

A little surprised at this: "Universal and Illumination's The Secret Life of Pets 2 led the way on Friday with an estimated $16.5 million for a current domestic total of $17.4 million, which includes Thursday night's preview grosses as well as $925k from the May 25 Fandango event. At this time the film is looking at a weekend gross around $46.2 million, missing expectations. The film received an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences."

Was expecting a soft, poor opening for Dark Phoenix but figured SLP 2 could hit around the low to mid $50s at least since there wasn't much other competition but Aladdin seems to still have a foothold as far as kids go.
