NXT UK Takeover: Blackpool
« on: January 10, 2019, 03:38:50 AM »
This Saturday is the first Takeover for the UK brand and should be a fun card on the middle of Saturday.  Being live in England means this will air 2 PM EST and 11 AM PST.

NXT UK Championship
Champion Pete Dunne vs Joe Coffey

NXT UK Women’s Championship
Champion Rhea Ripley vs Toni Storm

To crown the Inaugural NXT UK Tag Team Champions
Moustache Mountain (Tyler Bate & Trent Seven) vs Grizzled Young Veterans (Zach Gibson & James Drake)

No Disqualification Match
Dave Mastiff vs Eddie Dennis

Jordan Devlin vs Travis Banks

Charlotte tweeted she is traveling to be at the show and assuming that we get a new talent for the brand like WALTER in the crowd.

Also after the show is the Nigel McGuinness special that I made a separate thread for.  Some decent watching for a lazy Saturday seems to be incoming.

Walter is great.  He’s the OTT champion where Jordan devlin still competes here in Ireland and I’m seeing them again feb 3rd. Will be great.

I want Dunne to retain only for WALTER to jump the rail and beat the shit out of him like Owens did to Zayn to send off that one Takeover. WALTER seems like the right guy to take the belt from Dunne.

Football playoffs are on, so it is a no go for me live.  I'll watch it Sunday after the last game is over.

I love how walter basically looks like a normal out of shape guy then he can GO.

Pre-show started about 20 minutes ago, brief 30 minute pre-show is a good idea to run through for people who may not know the brand yet.  They've recapped everything without making it feel like overkill.  They showed a lot of the London PC stuff (without Tyler Bate creeping on Charlotte as seen on social media).

Hope this group knocks it out of the park and think it is cool the UK fans can see a show at a regular hour live.  I'm ready.

Tag titles opening the show should guarantee a good amount of time.  Pumped.  And it didn't take long for the crowd to take their shoes off.

BIG STRONG BOI

Tyler Bate with the Double Airplane Spin - goofy spot in the context of legitimate fight but incredible feat of strength

Crowd is so hot

Hot opener - thought that double team Helter Skelter/450 on Seven would be the finish but I'm not mad this keeps going

I'm really torn because I love Moustache Mountain and would love for Bate to be the inaugural champion on both titles but it would be good to establish Grizzled Young Vets, the same way Bate was established by being first when Dunne was probably the most ready at the time of the first tournament too

Two fun matches to start so already a good show for those on the fence to watch

Now it is the undefeated HOSS BATTLE

Having flashbacks to the early Takeover with the same buildup and match between BARON CORBIN and BULL DEMPSEY

Would expect Dennis gets the win here as UK Corbin so I can't wait for Mastiff Fit

HOSS BATTLE was better than I expected too.  Surprised at the outcome but I guess a chance to put another face over.  Good stuff.

Had some buffering blips throughout but the feed just froze up kinda deep in the Women's match.  Not happy with that.

Welp, came back as the replay came on.  Glad Toni won as I think she is the star of the division and was surprised Ripley went over to begin with but now Rhea has that little more credibility to carry around with her.

Wonder who Toni feuds with til we inevitably get her versus Jinny.

Very good show

Enjoyed the main event too.  As a bit of a Pete Dunne mark, I felt they had Coffey kick out of the Bitter End about one time too many but guess they wanted to get over Dunne winning by submission too.

This long celebration makes sense for the first show but I keep waiting for WALTER

Fantastic debut for WALTER

Looked like a star and the crowd was so hot.  Was wondering why they let Coffey back up but Walter destroying him with one blow was perfect.  Dude came off as a killer.  Can't wait for the match, though it will surely be the end of this long title reign.

So I gather this is worth checking out even if I've been barely keeping up with the brand?

Yes.  Even if you haven't really watched the show/brand before, quality matches with enough video packages for you to feel you know the needed story.  All the workers worked hard, very fun.

I gotta say, these are some inspired chants at Gibson.  The sign with his head in a toilet is pretty good too.

Tyler Bate is really something still.

Shoes off if you hate Gibson: possibly the greatest chant I’ve ever witnessed. I’m seeing him in OTT in February along with Walter. I’m gonna have to get Walter to sign my UK title replica now.

I thought the show was pretty good for their first Takeover.  Nothing mind-blowingly great, and I thought the main event was WAY too long and Joe Coffey actually looked really off in there.  Having WALTER (I understand that's the correct spelling) show up and look like Austrian Goldberg was a good way to end it.

Don't know where else to talk about it but I watched the Nigel McGuiness special that premiered after Takeover.   I'm happy that he's happy where he's at and I kinda want a Network show that's just him and Mauro travelling the country in an RV.

I started a thread for the Nigel special when it got announced like a week ago but didn’t bump it as I haven’t had a chance to watch yet.

It's too bad more of us didnt get into this show as it was really fucking good by my eyes. The opener and the main were both in the **** range, and yes that main did get a LOT of time but I thought it actually was a positive thing as a whole. Nice surprise at the end too and honestly, the Balor thing came out of left field and was an excellent swerve.

I thought the women's match might have possibly been the worse match, which is still saying it was a solid ***. But something was off in that one. Rushed feeling to it in a way.

Hopefully the NXT UK show will pick up from here as I wandered through all 24 episodes the week preceding Takeover and I found myself fast forwarding through alot of excess. Not a whole lot of character development but there was some, and some solid building of programs. The in-ring is the focus on this brand more than any other WWE property fortunately.

Jinny stands out as someone who needs a bigger push. She has massive charisma and a hell of a workrate to boot. Really digging on her.

I liked the show a lot but felt the main event was a bit too long. I really liked how Balor stepped up his game here.
