Super Bowl LIII: Patriots vs. Rams - 2/3/19 at 6:30/3:30 PM
« on: January 20, 2019, 11:50:52 PM »
Lots of storylines going into this game. Hawk mentioned Brandin Cooks as an under the radar storyline and this is also the Patriots' 3rd straight Super Bowl appearance.

Early Spotlights
- Patriots pass coverage against the Rams weapons at WR. Rams were 1st in First Downs and 5th in Passing Yards.
- Rams run defense (23rd in Rushing Yards allowed) going up against Sony Michel/James White/Rex Burkhead. Patriots should rely on a heavy ground attack again.
- K Greg Zuerlein is a secret weapon for the Rams. He can easily hit FGs from 50+ yards where most teams would be punting and trying to play the field position game.

Pats.  But it will be close because it always is with them.  The Rams can be run on (which is what the Pats do best) and Belichick will have no problem forcing Goff into mistakes.

Harley's Early Prediction
Patriots - 34, Rams - 23

I think the Patriots do exactly what they've done in both playoff games: Run the ball heavily, dominate the TOP in the 1st Half, then unleash Brady and the passing game on a gassed defense in the 2nd Half. Rams are basically the Chiefs but without the ability to storm back when in trouble and Goff isn't on the same level as Mahomes as far as improvising or extending from the pocket. Final score may make this closer than it seems but if the Patriots dominate TOP and get the lead early, Gurley/Anderson will become non-factors on the ground.

Rams "shutting down the run" was a mirage too. Against Dallas they were up 20-7 at half and Dallas had to pass to get back in it. They did a better job against the Saints but Ingram only had 9 carries all game (At 3.44 YPC) and Kamara was torching them through the air (hello James White).

On the flipside, the Patriots defense has been getting hot at the right time (14 points allowed through 3 quarters against the Chargers, just 7! through 3 quarters against the Chiefs on the road) while the offense has been insane with 88 Plays and 94 Plays run against the opponents.

Romo is even predicting Nantz jinxes.

Apparently the Patriots just cannot score in the first quarter of Super Bowls.

This has gone past "defensive struggle" to "just bad offense".  There's been like three horrible ducks to Hogan and Edleman is the entire offense on either team tonight.

I honestly think Jared Goff sucks and if Nick Foles or someone else was under center the Rams would have won. Or the LA Rams are cursed.

Romo (as usual) hit on it early when he said the Rams needed to double Edleman or they'd be in trouble.  I wouldn't pull a Raiders with Chuckie but a team is going to eventually throw a LOT of money at him to be a coordinator soon.

The defense that couldn't stop Blake Bortles in September shut down the top two offenses in the league for 6 quarters over two games.  That was on par with the Ravens against the Giants (or the two times the Giants won, honestly)

That Goff pick in the 4th was the worst throw I've seen in a Super Bowl in my adulthood. Someone could have done a run-in from the stands and caught that fucking balloon drifting through the air. It's telling that even in his third year his coach still tries to design plays for him to only have to read half the field. How does a 30 yard pass have a two second or more hang time?

My father, after seeing me react to that interception: "If you're like this now, I'm going to need a tranquilizer gun for you if the Packers are in the Super Bowl."

So....what the fuck was up with Gurley?  Second game in a row they said he was physically fine but rode the bench most of the game anyway.  He had some pretty decent runs and they probably could have used him to ease the pressure on Goff, but he's Malcolm Butler last year instead.

My theory is the media being fixated on McVay. Goff can be rebuilt maybe but I can only imagine what the Rams could do with a truly awesome QB. All the required surrounding pieces exist, and that defense played its ass off.

Best commercial was the NFL 100th Anniversary spot. I just kept marking out as each Hall of Famer appeared, and current players were involved *just* enough.

So was this objectively the worst SB ever?  I'm a hater but the game was just so awful it reached the point I didn't even care that the Pats won

Before tonight I would have readily said Steelers/Seahawks was the worst SB of my cognizant football-viewing lifetime but now I have a strong contender for at least a tie, though both were awful in their own distinct way so I dunno which wins that tie-breaker.  I know Colts/Cowboys also regularly comes up with this topic but that's before my time; I've only ever seen the NFL Films abridged version

Seahawks/Broncos was pretty rough, especially the amount of talent on the field for Denver.

Harmon had a clear lane in the DB blitz and drilled Goff as he was throwing, that's why it was a terrible throw.

The Patriots defense was one of the best in the league for the majority of the year if you really paid attention. Pro Football Focus was pointing it out all season. They had some really bad games, sure, but overall they were great. Gilmore played an incredible game and was the top rated CB in the league this season too.

I remember enough Super Bowl blowouts as a kid before most of the recent ones became close, but at least one team would handle the scoring. Despite the poor offenses, I actually found this game to be somewhat refreshing considering it felt like the NFL was turning into Madden on rookie mode.

Goff had some terrible throws, but he also took some bad sacks that cost his team. Some people mentioned it before last night, but he really missed Cooper Kupp. Likewise, the Patriots missed Josh Gordon (Hogan was turrible), but at least they could still move the ball a little.

Loved that the Patriots won and did so with such a dominating defensive performance. Flores continued his aggressive take no prisoners blitz attack and just unleashed at Goff throughout the game. Rams OL had absolutely no chance, especially when the running game started struggling and Patriots were dominating the TOP. Jason McCourty's hit on Cooks on the incredibly late INT was a fantastic hustle play considering how far he had to run. Van Noy & Hightower were constantly getting after Goff and even dudes like Shelton had moments in the spotlight.

Brady had an off game and Stephon Gilmore probably deserved MVP but Julian Edelman was the offense basically until the last few drives when the running game came alive and Gronk became Gronk. I still don't know why Wade didn't double team him as Edelman was torching them dudes and getting open by a good 3+ yards. Still amazes me that he doesn't seem to get the defensive respect that other WR1s for other teams get yet he torches a team and people act like it's come out of nowhere.

Ryan Allen and Matthew Slater were beasts on ST. I think there were 3 punts inside the 10 yard line and Slater was just constantly zeroing in on the ball. Reminded me a lot of how Steve Weatherford impacted the 18-1 Patriots Super Bowl for the Giants and rarely gave us any good field position to start with.

Finally props to Wade Phillips and that Rams D. They kept them in it until they finally broke at the end of the game but Phillips had a great game plan, Brady was mostly off throughout, and the run game wasn't doing much until the TD Drive & FG Clincher. That Rams D deserved a better offensive performance.

Blowouts aren't fun to watch but at least they're only embarrassing for one team.  Games like Steelers/Seahawks and last night though were embarrassments to the sport as a whole

Seahawks/Broncos was pretty rough, especially the amount of talent on the field for Denver.

...however I do agree this one was pretty bad in spite of what I just said

At least that game though did have the all-time great moment of the very first play when the Broncos center launched the ball over Peyton's head into the end-zone for a safety

It's gonna be weird five years from now when Wade Phillips has retired, Goof is pretty much what he is, and the media narrative will switch to McVay being so lucky he inherited the defense Jeff Fisher was building in the draft and gets the Andy Reid 2.0 label as a guy who can't adjust from his original gameplan once a defense starts bullying his offense and messing up their timing.

Was Goff getting hit why he missed his receiver until he was at the back of the endzone the one time? Cooks was waving his hand for a good 15 yards before even crossing the goal line.

If he can take this experience and learn/grow from it, great, I wish him well. I just don't think it'll happen and he'll never be better than above average.

I have to agree with that opinion. People that sat and watched could complain that it was a bad game, but if you watched it all the way through, you can't say that it didn't entertain you in some fashion.

After watching replays: Goff was under pressure sure, but he wasn't being hit when he threw that awful interception which killed his team. He isn't a good quarterback. The Rams will never win a Super Bowl with him under center.

I'm also glad that others are recognizing that the game was entertaining and compelling by virtue of its lack of scoring. I am a massive mark for defensive showdowns because that means small plays have big implications.

NFL Mic'd Up airs on NFL Network tonight at 8 PM/5 PM. Should be really interesting, especially the Belichick stuff. I'm always impressed seeing Belichick literally kneeling down in front of players and discussing tactics whereas other HC seem to just take the overhead view and rarely insert themselves in such a manner.

Ratings came in as the worst in 10 years. This is good news as the league now has to push new talent and end the Patriots main event run.

It probably had more due to the Rams.  Louisiana in particular (usually one of their stronger markets) had horrible ratings.
