Phil, much like Magic, was not committed to the intensity of the job. Even if they nailed a Top 5 draft guy, neither was putting in the work on the fringes which is very important to win when you are huge markets that can attract multiple guys that take up more than 60% of your cap.

The Magic interview on First Take was pretty embarrassing, but he at least knew he was going to win the PR battle against Pelinka. Whatever is next for the Lakers will probably not result in real sustained success for the Lakers so Magic will win; plus he has media members from ages 40-70 who will have his back and give him time to talk in perpetuity.

https://www.businessinsider.my/kawhi-leonard-free-food-condo-re-sign-raptors-2019-5/?r=US&IR=T

Quote
The "KaWine and Dine" campaign encourages restaurants to print out and display a badge that signifies Leonard can eat free there for life if he decides to re-sign with the Raptors. The effort is led by Raptors Republic, a blog that covers the team and certainly hopes to keep the superstar forward with Toronto.

"We want to rally the city to do everything we can to let Kawhi know that we support him, want him here long-term and ultimately make him feel at home in Toronto," the Raptors Republic marketing and social-media head Adam Robles told BlogTO. "He may need a warm coat, but he won't need his wallet. Let's wine'm, dine'm, and let's re-sign'm."

Since the campaign began, numerous businesses have joined the cause, including bars and restaurants. And now, apparently, a luxury condo is being offered to him.

If Kawhi Leonard re-signs with the Raptors, Simon S. Mass, CEO of The Condo Store Inc., will provide him with access to a luxury #condo in one of Toronto's prestigious hotel residences!

Happy for the Raptors but you know if the Warriors win, Drake still going to be in that Golden State locker room.

Just curious if he smashing that Bucks owner's daughter yet.

Late to the party but congrats to Toronto.  I've joked about the "rivalry" with the Knicks in the past but I'm genuinely happy for them.  I go back to the days of their first expansion draft and Damon Stoudamire, and Toronto is a lovely city.

6 other teams have never made the Finals.  In order of time in the league:

Clippers
Denver
Hornets
Wolves
Grizzlies
Pelicans

So of the five expansion teams in my lifetime Toronto is the only one to make it.  Wolves and Grizzlies the only other ones to make a conference finals.

The Clippers are the only franchise on that list that existed before the ABA merger.  In fact, they've never made a conference finals, either.  Also, the Dallas/Miami series are the only two instances of two post-merger expansion teams meeting in the Finals.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Miami and Orlando as expansion teams for some reason.  Duh.  Who could forget the great teams led by Rony Siekly and Scott Skiles

And if you're counting ABA Finals appearances Denver is off the list

What's funny is that they do but they don't.  Most teams would kill to have their first two guys off the bench be Ibaka and VanVleet.  However, that's pretty much it for the Raptors.  Will be interesting if the team can keep up this pace of play rotating only seven guys, especially Kawhi, who has been going balls out for what seems like weeks now.

Raptors looked far and away like the better team last night.  And they kept thing physical which typically shuts down Steph, though he had what I felt was a quiet 30-point performance last night.  As good as Toronto looked, I feel it is impressive they still only won by single digits with Warriors being Durant-less.  I’m fine with either team winning, just hoping for some good basketball, which I think it will be.

If Pascal and Danny can keep this pace up to account for when Lowry and Kawhi are not so hot we definitely have a shot here. We'll see how game 2 goes.

Pretty sure you guys know what kind of failed three-peat material I'm sitting on. Never heard of a team that needed two MVP's and five All-Stars healthy to win a fucking title. Some buster ass shit is what that is. I don't wanna hear any of the injury complaining when this is over, they have an MVP, a slightly hobbled perennial All-Star and another All-Star on the squad. Cousins is crippled and isn’t that good anymore anyway so I don’t mean him.  People are already whining like fucking crazy. They can't beat a team with two All-Stars, nah man, I don't wanna hear that.

I actually think that's not unreasonable to think. This would've been over had Game 2 been different about that second half.

Warriors are hobbled and haven't seemed like a team that truly, really wants it. The Raptors are healthy and really want it badly.

Here's hoping they finish them off next game.

I read a take online saying if the Cavs had been healthy the last few years, they would have a had few more titles. Basically, the Warriors didn't have KD and they would have needed him to get over the hump of losing back to back finals to the Cavs. Interesting to think about it.

It's amazing how crippled Cousins looks. Kerr should really just go with Bogut as long as possible until he runs out of gas. At least Bogut makes the right pass and doesn't shoot unless he absolutely has to. Cousins is just terrible, breaks my heart to see cause I used to be a massive fan.

On the other hand, I think we can end this on Monday night, even if Durant makes it back somehow. Curry looks absolutely toast. No legs, no hustle, awful body language. Van Vleet (and the whole team really) have beaten him into exhaustion. Klay can only do so much. And no one else they use regularly can shoot at all. Like at all. Don't even need to cover Livingston, Iguodala or Green.

Saw that earlier and not surprised.  Figure if they lose and he does want to leave, he can use it as an excuse.  If his return has them mount a comeback from 3-1, he can get the praise he desires as a hero.  I really liked Durant in OKC and still like him in Golden State but my opinion of him dropped there.  I thought it was weird when he joined up but it wasn't until this shift in his demeanor that I just see him differently than I used to.  I used to laugh at his "Fake Tough Guy" comment about Bosh but that's kinda how I see him since he joined the Warriors.

I am happy for Raptors fans but really think people dismissing the Warriors injuries are being a bit overboard.  It isn't just a few minor injuries and "they shouldn't need two MVPs" kind of argument.  Durant hasn't even been around, Klay has been playing hurt, out of sync Cousins playing hurt on top of the "can he return to form" questions, Looney and Iguodala are key contributors playing hurt.  About half of their team and several key guys playing hurt, that's major minutes and play being impacted.  And these are guys that have had the most miles of them of just about anyone in the league the last several years.  Steph always struggles against the more physical teams and is putting up strong numbers and probably his best finals performance, though I feel like last year was the year I personally felt he should've gotten the MVP over Durant.  The games have still been fairly close, all things considered.  Take nothing away from the Raptors because they have been the better team but think there is too much relishing in the Warriors struggle from all the hate against them.

This does feel like the end of the line for the Warriors though.  I really don't think KD should leave.  The setup it is reported that he craves is pretty much what he had in OKC.  I don't really feel like he left to mature and learn to win like Lebron did.  There was some evolution of Lebron on those Heat team.  I just don't see that with the Golden State years with KD.  To me, he has regressed as a leader in many ways, like what I referenced above.  I don't think a combo of him and Kyrie will amount to much.  Then again, I saw Kyrie as another really good one on one guy but not a leader/winner, tried to embrace him and go all in with the Celtics seeing I follow them.  He started out well last year but after they did well following his injury, his pride and chip on his shoulder got in his way to the point I don't know if I see him deferring or sacrificing again.  He was trying to prove he could win without Lebron initially but feel he is back on his "me first" train.  Honestly if Durant does go, I'd like to see him go some place like the Clippers.  Some LA reporter this morning was starting up the Klay to the Lakers talk again, citing he has been under the radar cast in Space Jam 2, which even though all that is likely and possible, just that sentence alone makes me laugh.

On the injuries subject, it's not a matter of underselling it. The fact of the matter is that players get hurt all the time and this is the nature of the beast. All the Warriors did for years was beat teams with injuries and everyone would make fun of those teams for the manner in which they lost without pointing out that those teams had injured players. Time to break it down.

The Warriors have played against teams with all these injured players in different series. I did the right thing and separated them to make clear how often they have played against crippled teams. They also avoided playing OKC one time because Durant was injured.

Jrue Holiday
Mike Conley and Tony Allen
Patrick Beverley
Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love
Jusuf Nurkic
George Hill when he was good.
Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker
Kawhi Leonard again.
DeMarcus Cousins
Chris Paul
Jusuf Nurkic and Enes Kanter. Wasn't Lillard as hurt as Klay? We should throw him on there too.

Nope. Don't wanna hear it at all.

Nobody said anything when LeBron was missing players in the Finals, or this season for that matter, and nobody said anything when the Lakers used a crippled up Karl Malone and Gary Payton. The thing everyone remembers is that those teams got their ass beat. Injuries are the nature of the beast and the effect of playing basketball so long every season is that players get hurt. This is what happens to successful teams who play too many games.

Plus, when they signed Cousins they knew his body was broken down and they didn't care. The Raptors are also missing a key rotation piece in these Finals, nobody is saying anything about that.

Used to? Did you quit, because he got injured?
