NFL Training Camp and Pre-Season
« on: July 19, 2019, 04:54:17 AM »
Players finally start putting on the pads and pre-season games are just weeks away. What are you watching for your team(s)?

Big news is that Tyreek Hill will not be suspended this season. We also have one of our first practice/TC injuries with Denver LB Todd Davis out 3-4 weeks with a partial calf tear.

I want to see the Packers offensive scheme. Do we go to a 3WR default like the Rams did? LaFleur has a lot more talent at his disposal in Green Bay than in Tennessee. I also don't think the Packers deviate from a running back by committee setup.

The Packers defense won't have much in preseason that shows much. That's what I'm really looking forward to this season.

For the Patriots I'm mainly looking at...

#1: How the LB group shakes out. Ja'Whaun Bentley is back healthy and they have Jamie Collins back in the fold but they have a pretty locked in group already at the top. Does Christian Sam take the step forward necessary to stick on the roster? I figure they currently have 4 LB Spots locked in: Hightower, Van Noy, Roberts, and Brandon King (ST Ace).

#2: The final RB spot battle, likely between Rex Burkhead and Brandon Bolden. Bolden's a ST coverage cog and can chip in at RB. Can Burkhead do enough to hold onto his roster spot? How does rookie Damien Harris effect this battle?

#3: Which UDFA flashes and makes the roster? There are some notable names including WRs Jakobi Meyers & Ryan Davis, TE Andrew Beck has a chance to stick on the PS, and Slot CB D'Angelo Ross and S Malik Gant both have a chance to make a name on ST.

#4: Belichick clearly went bigger at WR: Maurice Harris, N'Keal Harry, Dontrelle Inman, Jakobi Meyers, and Demaryius Thomas are all listed at 6'2+. Belichick's long tried to find a consistent 'big' WR for the outside so it'll be interesting to see who in this group stands out. Harry has the most buzz obviously but Harris and Inman are names to watch. Thomas, if healthy, can be very productive too but that's a legit question mark.

Jarran Reed has been suspended 6 games for Seattle while Julian Edelman is dealing with a thumb injury and will miss multiple weeks (not that he really needs it).

Redskins released Mason Foster, a guy I've been a fan of since he hit NFL Draft circles a while back. Reportedly clashed with the coaching staff last year so it was just a matter of time for this scenario to occur. He should be signed pretty quickly by another NFL team.

Atlanta signed DE Allen Bailey who should fill in as a rotational DL option. He'll also reunite with assistant coach Bob Sutton, which was probably a key part in the signing as well.

Makes me think they see Lowry as a younger, similar talent to Daniels. Started just 8 games last year but had 3 Sacks and 44 tackles on top of a 2 Sack/32 tackle campaign the year prior. Biggest difference is that Daniels is a Pro-Bowl level talent at DT but they have some guys waiting in the wings such as Kenny Clark, Kingsley Keke, and Montravius Adams.

Other things of note: Daniels is coming off an injury, was a UFA for 2020, and would be 31 years old. Maybe Green Bay decided his production wasn't worth the age/cap cost if they can get similar production from multiple players who are younger & they can lock up longer term.

Free Agents starting to get signed: WR Allen Hurns lands with Miami on a 1 year deal worth up to $3 Million. Jaguars signed CB/STer Josh Robinson.

In injury news, WR Sterling Shephard broke his thumb and is week to week for the Giants.

Lions upgraded their DL added Mike Daniels to a 1 year deal for $9.1 Million. Also the 49ers signed TE Niles Paul who's bounced around the league for a while. He's served as a depth TE but has never matched his 2014 numbers where he had 35+ catches and over 500 receiving yards.

Golden Tate has an interesting defense for his PED. Says it comes from a fertility drug from a doctor, immediately found out afterwards that the prescription had a thing he couldn't take, and immediately discontinued use and reported it to the NFL's program.

I think he's got a case to knock that to a warning (with tons of tests) or a single game.

Probably makes him doubtful for Week 1, which would be around 7 weeks away. Bengals kind of lucked out in this scenario as it could've been much worse.

Also looks like Washington will be trading Trent Williams at some point as he basically refuses to play for the team again.

Boselli was the best tackle in football in the late 90s.  He'd be an easy Hall of Famer if he didn't get hurt.  Taylor was around a long time, but he was nowhere near as good a player.

A bit of a stunner here as Texans waived RB D'Onta Foreman, but some rumblings that Houston had grown tired of Foreman's lack of work ethic. Houston currently has rookies Damarea Crockett & Karan Higdon as well as Josh Ferguson & Taiwan Jones behind Lamar Miller at the moment. Ferguson and Jones both have experience as return men, which should bolster their roster chances.

They had way more pressing needs than RB IMO. It sounds like they were hoping Foreman would come in with a serious work attitude to challenge Miller after missing last year but that wasn't the case.

Part of me thinks Houston was just tired of waiting for this guy to get his act together and figured cutting him now would let them see what they have with their other RBs and possibly sign guys who won't make the 53 of other teams later on.

I'm really wondering more if Foreman looked really toasted from that Achilles injury and that was the main reason for cutting him. This was Foreman's 3rd season with the team. If they had any question about the guy's work ethic they should have thought addressing running back would have been wise. They needed OL help but damn that's poor roster management. Figure out some way to get a RB in the mid-rounds. A guy like Rodney Anderson who has starter potential would have been a perfect late stash for them. But, this is also an organization that fired their GM in June.

Kinda...it's really only a way to give Brady a slight raise this year and push his cap hit out over a 3 year span. After this season ends he is a FA, and the final 2 years of this new deal are voided. The $10mil cap hit stays for each of the next 2 seasons. If they want him back next year it will basically be a new deal altogether. It's just a way to play with the cap and nothing more.

Yeah, I read later that Brees has a similar contract.

I'm guessing this is both to protect Brady from being stuck as the backup/mentor if the Pats decide to move on (dude just wants to play) and keeps the cap hit reasonable if the fabled "cliff" happens this year and Brady retires.

Everything coming out is that it's more than just training on a beach, even amongst Raiders personnel.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001039303/article/raiders-antonio-brown-dealing-with-frostbitten-feet

"As far as the backstory -- what led to this -- what I was told, talking to a couple Raiders people, basically the story that they are saying is that Antonio Brown used a cryogenic chamber without proper footwear and that is why his feet ended up the way they did. Certainly, some other questions medically, for his feet, how they ended up looking like that, how he trained through feet which are so badly injured he really can't continue to train. A lot of questions there. But at the very least, that is the story they are saying. Still day-to-day. Unclear when Antonio Brown is going get back out at practice."

Just seems like it's something more than just blisters from training on a beach that would sideline him for longer than a few days. The image looks way more than just blisters...
