Seems about right, a day after an article/profile on him was released with nuggets like:

- Typically sleeps about 4 hours or less a night.
- Texts coaches and players at all hours of the night.
- Bolted the hospital after his wife gave birth to one of his kids to ensure he was on time for a regularly-scheduled meeting with Peyton.

Weird guy, and I didn't do the last one justice. All that said, still like the hire, as much as one can before actual games are played.

It's the first game of preseason but the Pats defense looks strong and feisty so far.

Lions punt on 4th and 3 down 31-0.  It's fucking preseason, work on your 4th and short situations.

They also have -11 passing yards.  Patricia has work to do.

Edit: Stafford won't make it past week 5 if the regular Lions offensive line plays like this.

Daniel Jones surprisingly impressed me in his first game.  If he keeps it up, he should start the season.  I'm just disappointed in the lightning delay cutting his night short.

Also, apparently Antonio Brown has gone AWOL on the Raiders.  They have no idea where he is or what he's doing.

A lot of the reports out of camp have said how impressed everyone is with Jones. He's got great chemistry with his receivers. Maybe the brass wasn't as stupid as the media made them out to be?

https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/raiders/raiders-expect-wr-antonio-brown-back-soon-1822939/

"Although this is not a team policy, it falls on NFL clubs to ensure that players don’t conduct football activities in helmets that fail to meet the league’s safety standards. Such is the NFL’s directive: All equipment must be certified by the National Operating Committee for Standards and Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).

This was conveyed to Brown on multiple occasions.

NOCSAE neither has allowed nor tested Brown’s helmet model because it is older than 10 years, a source said.

On Friday, Brown remotely participated in a Philadelphia-based conference call where an independent arbitrator heard his case, a league source said. Representatives from the NFL and player union also participated, and the arbitrator’s ruling is expected next week, a source said.

Brown’s helmet in question appears to be a Schutt Air Advantage.

Virginia Tech University regards this model as a “two-star” helmet on a five-star safety system.

“It’s not something we recommend people wear,” said Dr. Stefan Duma, a helmet safety expert and founding director of Virginia Tech Wake Forest Center for Injury Biomechanics. "There are 15 different five-star helmets out there. He can pick any one he likes. He’s just not allowed to wear that one.”

Offseason for KICKERS be booming, dawgs! ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Ravens traded K Kaare Vedvik to the Vikings for a 2020 fifth-round pick. Also Jets signed K Taylor Bertolet after Chandler Catanzaro announced his retirement.

Cleveland signed TE Rico Gathers and Denver's Theo Riddick is out 6-8 weeks with a fractured shoulder.

Other signing news: Jaguars signed OL Ben Ijalana. Bills signed LB Sam Acho (releasing OG Vlad Ducasse).

To the surprise of no one, the arbitrator ruled against Antonio Brown in Helmetgate.  We'll see now if his threat to retire was an empty one.

This is becoming an interesting storyline to watch: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Redskins are telling other teams they are not trading Trent Williams. Williams is refusing to report to the team, willing to openly sit out the entire season while having already demanded a trade elsewhere. Washington has refused to budge and have now stated they are refusing to trade him (until an offer blows them away probably). For those who care about the numbers, PFF has graded him in the 80s or 90s from 2013-2017 and gave him a 74.0 grade last season.

Williams is right to refuse to play for them if he doesn't trust their medical staff.

Best part of Saints camp has been Pelicans draft pick Zion Williamson taking part in QB drills for shits and giggles.

Doubt he travels to the WC, though.

I'm glad Brees sat out the last game. That line is going to get someone killed if they don't gel, soon.

I'd assume the practice doesn't include too much Taysom Hill trickery. Seems like they're having him go straight QB when eyes are on him.

Chase Winovich might be something special for this defense.  Plus, he has good motivation: his grandma gives him $5 and chocolate every time he plays and doesn't get hurt.

Jakobi Meyers has looked like the real deal for the Patriots. The Tight Ends are showing some flashes, especially on the Gronk-style seam routes downfield although the lack of blocking has also shown up. Will be curious to see if any TE locks down the #1 spot consistently or if it ends up as a rotational area.

He was hit by a minivan while riding his motorcycle.  RIP

In other news, Antonio Brown left the Raiders again over his helmet.  This is like something out of WWE.

Mike Mayock:
“Here’s the bottom line: He’s upset about the helmet issue. We have supported that, we appreciate that. But at this point, we’ve pretty much exhausted all avenues of relief. So from our perspective, it’s time for him to be all in or all out. We’re hoping he’s back soon. We’ve got 89 guys busting their tails. We are really excited about where this franchise is going, and we’re hoping AB is going to be a big part of it, starting Week One against Denver. End of story, no questions.”

I totally forgot that it was him who got that big blow that I said Burfict should've been canned entirely in the NFL. That looks like a car accident type of hit with the way his head flailed around.

Yeah... I can agree with that assessment.

Supposedly Antonio Brown's been a diva/head case since his Central Michigan days. He was expelled from Florida International for an altercation with security prior to landing at CMU. There's a reason he was taken in the 6th Round.

Steelers have had a good history at hiding or covering up for their players though.

I remember the day when the Steelers deciding to pay Antonio Brown instead of Mike Wallace was a huge surprise. And I don't mean to suggest they didn't get their money's worth (over two contract extensions, in fact). It's just funny thinking about it now since I think I remember the media selling it as Wallace being too much of a distraction, while AB quietly went about his business and got paid.

Brown was at training camp today.

I think a timeline is required here.

Quote
Last year, the NFL banned specific helmet models previously worn by players like Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Even though those helmets had been determined to be unfit for further use by NFL players, the NFL gave them a full football season to process that decision, to explore alternatives (as Brady did, regularly embracing a new helmet before reverting to the old one, several times over), and to eventually pick a new helmet after the one-year grace period expired. Brown, whose helmet model of choice wasn’t prohibited by the league until late last week, isn’t getting that same courtesy.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/19/drew-rosenhaus-were-still-trying-to-come-up-with-a-helmet-solution-for-antonio-brown/

So, as the bolded says, we have a double standard straight away. Changing a helmet is nowhere near as simple as it sounds. Brady couldn't find a new helmet he liked for a whole year and kept wearing his old hat.

- Brown has hurt foot. His agent was talking about legal action against the place this happened at.

- Brown practices with hurt foot, shows foot to reporter after practice. Raiders beat reporters talk about him having a pretty fucked up foot and were surprised he took the practice field.

- Brown misses next practice. I believe he is also not allowed to use his old helmet at this point.

- Brown leaves camp to get treatment on foot. Training camp is in Napa and it is not a place I would expect someone to get treatment for burned feet.

- Story about Brown's helmet comes out when he couldn't practice anyway.

- Media talks about him potentially retiring.

- NFL tells him he can wear that helmet model as long as he has a newer one.

- Brown finds newer model from 2014.

- Brown flies with the team to Arizona and takes some reps on the field before the game.

- Brown practices.

- Story breaks in the middle of practice that Brown cannot wear that helmet model at all even though the rules said he could.

- Brown stops practicing. Mayock makes comment about the Raiders wanting him all in or all out. You can't practice without a helmet, and he has an injured foot, so I don't really see what the problem is there.

- Brown shows up at training camp today. His teammates suggest on the same day that this story is media driven. There was no practice today.

At no point has Antonio Brown ever said that he would retire. It was unlikely he would play in the preseason at all, but with a messed up foot it's even more unlikely.

Brown's agent said they and the Raiders had been talking about his helmet since March. If this dude didn't play for the Raiders you'd be eviscerating him for pitching a needless fit over a helmet issue, one that was previously known for months.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27419343/agent-says-ab-helmet-concern-safety-issue

Rosenhaus said it's a safety issue because AB "feels" unsafe.
