NFL Predictions 2019
« on: August 29, 2019, 01:31:00 PM »
Preseason is over after tonight, so it seems like a good time to make predictions for the season.

Feel free to just pick the playoff teams and the Super Bowl, but here’s my guesses for each team’s record (total wins/losses don’t add up).

AFC East

1. Patriots – 12-4
2. Jets – 8-8
3. Bills – 7-9
4. Dolphins – 4-12

AFC North

1. Steelers – 10-6
2. Browns – 9-7
3. Ravens – 7-9
4. Bengals – 3-13

AFC South

1. Titans – 9-7
2. Texans – 9-7*
3. Jaguars – 8-8
4. Colts – 6-10

AFC West

1. Chiefs – 12-4
2. Chargers – 10-6*
3. Raiders – 7-9
4. Broncos – 5-11

NFC East

1. Cowboys – 10-6
2. Eagles – 10-6*
3. Giants – 5-11
4. Redskins – 3-13

NFC North

1. Packers – 10-6
2. Vikings – 9-7*
3. Bears – 8-8
4. Lions – 6-10

NFC South

1. Saints – 12-4
2. Falcons – 8-8
3. Buccaneers – 6-10
4. Panthers – 5-11

NFC West

1. Rams – 11-5
2. 49ers – 8-8
3. Seahawks – 8-8
4. Cardinals – 5-11

AFC Championship – Patriots over Chiefs
NFC Championship – Cowboys over Saints
Super Bowl – Cowboys over Patriots

Yeah, I feel like most of these are the same, boring picks. In the AFC’s case, it really seems difficult to stray from the usual. At least the NFC offers some options for parity.

The longer the offseason has gone on, the more I’ve started to think the Browns miss the playoffs. The talent’s there, but in this scenario, they just miss on a tiebreaker. I don’t feel great about the Texans pick, to be honest.

For the Jets, I’m cautiously optimistic, and I’ve loved much of their offseason. But I’d expect their lack of corner depth, among other things, to cost them games. If Darnold takes the leap forward, I could see them contending for a wild card spot. Every new head coach for the Jets since 2000 has had a winning season in year one, so there’s that.

Is there a playoff machine like ESPN has had in year's past where you just have to pick the games and it works it out for you?  I can only find the 2018 one on the ESPN site.

The Raiders are gonna make the playoffs. Believe that. Their offense should be incredible. Defense will be above or at league average.

Here's my finishes via the NFL Predictor thing. Teams I'm apparently high on = Pittsburgh as a return to form & Tennessee making a bit of a jump. Green Bay and Atlanta if their defense does enough should be back to form too.

Teams I apparently hate = Buffalo (I think the Jets and Dolphins are slightly better), Cincinnati (not having AJ Green will hurt them and I'm not sold yet on their new HC making a quick turnaround of the franchise), Jacksonville (still don't have Marqise Lee healthy and play in a division which beats up on itself), Washington (not sold on the defense and they could be starting a rookie QB by mid-season), and Detroit (just not sold on the defense coupled with a very tough division overall).

AFC East: New England (12-4), NY Jets (6-10), Miami (5-11), Buffalo (4-12)
AFC North: Cleveland (12-4), Pittsburgh (12-4), Baltimore (9-7), Cincinnati (3-13)
AFC South: Indy (8-8), Tennessee (8-8), Houston (6-10), Jacksonville (2-14)
AFC West: Kansas City (14-2), LA Chargers (8-8), Denver (8-8), Oakland (8-8) Denver has at least 5 winnable games, throw in a few upsets, and I can see the 8-8 record if the Chargers fall back to Earth a bit.

NFC East: Philadelphia (12-4), Dallas (9-7), NY Giants (5-11), Washington (3-13)
NFC North: Green Bay (13-3), Minnesota (12-4), Chicago (5-11), Detroit (3-13)
NFC South: Atlanta (11-5), New Orleans (10-6), Carolina (7-9), Tampa Bay (5-11)
NFC West: LA Rams (14-2), Seattle (10-6), San Francisco (6-10), Arizona (6-10)

Wild Card Round: Pittsburgh beats Indy, Cleveland beats Baltimore, Minnesota beats Atlanta, Philadelphia beats Seattle
Divisional Round: New England beats Cleveland, Kansas City beats Pittsburgh, Philadelphia beats Green Bay, LA Rams beat Minnesota
Championship Round: Kansas City beats New England, Philadelphia beats LA Rams
Super Bowl: Kansas City beats Philadelphia

I was really tempted to pick the Jags, but the way it worked out with the playoff predictor put them in Arrowhead which I think is the worst possible matchup for them.  I'm down on the Rams and Saints and feel they both peaked last year.  They should still be decent, but I don't see them as Super Bowl contenders.  I also don't like the Ravens and think defenses will catch up to Jackson like the Chargers did in the playoffs.  I have a lot of teams bottoming out with four wins or less.  The bad teams this year look really bad.  First coach fired will be Matt Patricia after the team quits on him.  The Giants are really tough to predict due to their QB situation.  If Daniel Jones gets in sooner rather than later, their record will be considerably better than the 3 wins I gave them.  I made those with the assumption that Eli Manning starts most of the season.

I can see about 5-6 games they have a chance in: Detroit, @ Cincinnati, @ NY Giants (if Jones is starting by then), San Francisco x2, @ Tampa Bay, and @ LA Rams in Week 17 if the Rams sit most of their starters.

I'm a little more bullish on the offense (they had one of the worst offenses in NFL History last year and still went 3-13). Throw in an upset and winning 3-4 games in the above group and them finishing 5-11 or even 6-10 wouldn't be too surprising IMO.

I predict that Sam Darnold sets the Jets franchise records for both yards and touchdowns this year.

I'll take this bet, no problem. The Bills still have Josh Allen throwing the football. The Raiders start against five good teams, so we'll know what's up pretty fast. They have vastly improved on last year's team. The only player of value they lost is Jared Cook, who has been well replaced. They added a lot of receivers to a group that pretty much solely had Jordy Nelson and bums. They have a running back when they had Doug Martin last season.

Bills had the #2 defense last season in yards allowed (middle of the field in points allowed thanks to the offense not moving the ball) and added perhaps the most NFL ready defenseman in the draft, whereas the Raiders still look to be pretty below average there, and have beefed up their offensive line nicely where they will be pretty middle of the pack, compared to a shit tier line they had last season.   Buffalo didn't make any one big splashy offseason pickup (with the exception of maybe Mitch Morse, assuming he can stay on the field) but they added a lot of nice small pickups to help the offense considerably.   They were also 5-5 last season in games that Josh Allen played the entire time so if they can keep him off his back, something that should be easier this year with a better offensive line that doesn't cause him to have to scramble constantly, a .500 record is easily in play, something I don't see happening with the Raiders.

(I do have three Raiders on my fantasy team with Tyrell Wililams, Richard and Waller, although Tyrell is the only one I expect I'll start too often)

Just realized I didn't make predictions. I'm sticking to the bet obviously.

AFC

1. Pats
2. Chiefs
3. Browns
4. Texans
5. Ravens
6. Titans

AFC Title Game will be Pats beating the Chiefs again. Yawn

NFC

1. Saints
2. Packers
3. Cowboys
4. Rams
5. Eagles
6. Panthers

NFC Title Game is Saints-Packers and the Saints win before getting tanked in the Super Bowl. Yawn.
