China made me start this thread (NBA Oct/Nov)
« on: October 19, 2019, 11:42:49 AM »
Season starts Tuesday and interest has likely already plummeted in one opening night game, as Zion Williamson's career begins with the announcement that he will miss "several weeks" with a knee issue.  I can already read the "NEXT GREG ODEN" tweets as I type this out.

I forgot to rank the Pacers in my preseason ranking. Put them in 6 seed spot (still losing in the first round in 7). Bump Miami to 8 (still losing but taking Milwaukee to 6 due to Jimmy Butler being an insane person) and apologies to Evan Fournier but I DON'T think his team will make the playoffs.

Jaylen Brown (4/115), Dejounte Murray (4/64) and Buddy Hield (4/86, 20m incentives) all signed extensions.

Knicks picked up their options on Frank, Knox and DSJ.

Zion's out 6-8 weeks after meniscus surgery

Sabonis as well, 4/79.

I don't even have the words for that Jaylen Brown deal.  How quick do you think he agreed to sign that?

Oh man. I was hoping Iso Joe was gonna get another playoff moment with the old dog Pistons :(

Is there another set of negotiations for a new CBA coming up in a year or two? That's the only way I can explain these contracts.  :o

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2019/10/21/michael-jordan-says-steph-curry-not-hall-famer-yet/4060417002/

OK, so obviously this is a horrible take by MJ if he's being serious (though I guess hardly surprising from the guy who thought Cody Zeller had higher potential than Giannis Antetokounmpo) but my question is this.  Why would the interviewer even bring Curry up here?  You have LeBron, Kobe, Shaq, Duncan who weren't named, and you use Stephen Curry to illustrate this point?  And are we really at the point with the Curry stanning where we should be offended that he's not picked over Magic Johnson?

Speaking of Magic, he had the best retort to this.

Bring back The Magic Hour

I mean that headline SAYS Michael Jordan JOKES about Steph Curry not being a Hall of Famer. And I'm thinking what MJ meant is that Steph Curry just hasn't been inducted into the Hall of Fame yet not that he's undeserving of it.

Talk about sports media blowing a mountain out of a molehill.

Hard to believe that there was once a point in time when LeBron and Dwight being on the same team would have been thought of as more "unfair" than Kevin Durant on the Warriors.

Woke Shaq is not a turn I saw coming.

Damn. The Clippers looked GREAT last night. I might have to change my finals prediction. I don't think there's a player on the team that I don't like. Lakers looked good too for a lot of the game but AD and LeBron were kind of inconspicuous towards the end and I think Lakers player of the game might have been Danny Green!

I'm kind of excited for the start of this season for the Bulls, but then I remember this goober is still the coach

Quote

And three days before the start of this year’s training camp, Boylen brought in another memory of his factory days. He ordered a time clock...To the right, resting in two small adjacent grey placeholders, are the players’ time cards.

“So when guys come through the doors they punch in now,” Boylen said. “Punching in to work.”

He was a fantasy monster last season. Except when they sat him at the end of last season.

I was in first place all last season. Then right before my playoffs Jrue Holiday got hurt, then Lebron was sat for the end of the year, and Blake and Embiid barely played at the end as well.

And Jimmy Butler is sitting out tonight for no given reason.

Celtics need a vet or a big or a big vet. I think they'll match up well against 90% of teams but they were up against the Monstarrs tonight.

I laughed and laughed at Kyrie trying and failing to play hero ball at the end of Nets/TWolves was hilarious. Don't mention how he scored 50. But yeah, I hope he is as "good" for the young Nets as he was for the Celtics last season >:(

Well, the Knicks suck yet again, but at least they've mostly been in these games against 3 2019 playoff teams.

I think I've seen enough of David Fizdale.  Maybe he's a great assistant coach, but he's a fucking terrible head coach and his personality is really starting to get on my nerves.  DSJ has been f'n terrible and Frank is glued to the bench yet again for some fucking reason.  Bobby Portis was a complete waste of a signing, but tbf they didn't know they were getting Morris too when they signed him.

On a bright note, RJ Barrett looks like a beast.  He's going to hit the rookie wall fast if they keep running him 35-40 a night, but I'm ok with that.  Kevin Knox was shooting the lights out in the first two games as well.

I knew the SacKings would regret firing the competent at worst Dave Joerger for that bumass Luke Walton.

So excited that the NBA is back!  I am glad to see that Foreign Agent Kamala, along with many others in the Twitterverse, are finally starting to see what I saw long ago in Luke Walton; he is simply not a competent head coach.  Granted, he did win championships as an assistant, but as we've seen many times, just because you've won multiple championships in one capacity doesn't mean you won't be a total failure in others.

It is also a great sense of validity to see how the former young players I had under my wing here in LA, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and of course, Lonzo Ball, are performing in New Orleans.  I was totally confident that those kids surrounding the greatest athlete in the world, LeBron James, could bring my Lakers many more championships, but sadly my snake of a GM hire did not see it that way, which is his loss.  I do have to give credit to Anthony Davis however, as through two games, he has yet to miss a game due to injury, which is very unexpected.

The Warriors lost by 28 points to the Oklahoma City Thunder. They were down by as many as 42 during the game.

Starting to think I may have been dumb to have made that board bet with 909 :-\

First time they've started 0-2 since Steph's rookie season.

The Warriors look bad, but I can't get behind the Thunder fans trying to party off this win. Oklahoma City is rebuilding, whether they want to admit it to themselves, or not, so this win doesn't mean anything. They couldn't beat the Warriors, when it mattered.

Yeah, look at their full rotation. The playoff runs are over and they will be very lucky to make the playoffs. Their two best scorers are two guys who do the same exact shit.

Yeah. I mean if Klay doesn't get back at all this season, which Kerr said is likely then I doubt the The Warriors will make the playoffs and I'm never making a god damn board bet again.

If it doesn't get better soon, then I'm guessing it won't take Golden State too long to throw in the tank towel. If they get a top pick plus Klay back at full health next season (and probably give generous rest to Draymond and Steph if they go this route) then maybe the Dynasty is back.

Way way too early NBA predictions but since the Pels and Kings look like garbage too, maybe the Mavs or Timberwolves (or THE SUNS!?) take one of the 6 to 8 seeds!?

Bulls look just as miserable as the last two years. The game last night was an eye sore and they were worthless both offensively and defensively. Boylen is amazing at sucking up to the front office so he'll get to stay and the players will be blamed over the coach and front office. Second year where John Paxson claims they are gonna make the playoffs and I predict they'll win around 25 games. They will also get the 7th pick again.

They aren't going to tank and people are going to get fired before this is all over. With this China mess, the cap is going down. Let's say it just stays at $109 million.

The Warriors have to pay the repeater tax next season firstly. A top draft pick could cost 4-9 million in salary. They're forced to fill out their roster with minimums. I can't do all the math but we're talking about 300 million in payroll. Unless they dump their stars, they're so far over the cap that every dollar they spend over the cap next season will cost them in excess of $6.75 for spending that dollar. That adds up really fast.

The idea that they could keep this team together and compete was illogical on their part. Their cap situation also exacerbates the issue with their rotation as a whole. Every player on their team that isn't drawing a huge contract is a bum.

This NPR story on the NBA being founded in 1949 not 1946 as NBA claims is kind of blowing my mind.

DOES THAT MEAN THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM IN 1996 WAS A COMPETE SHAM!?

KCPoop is the worst player that would definitely make almost every team in the league.

I thought that was Wiggins?

Wiggins can score at least.
