AEW Bash at the Beach
« on: January 14, 2020, 12:41:16 AM »
WCW's annual summer tradition returns...in AEW...in the middle of winter, as part of the kickoff for Chris Jericho's Rock N Wrestling Rager at Sea. Two weeks, we had a great episode of Dynamite (if not one of the best). Last week, we had consensus worst episode of the show. What type of show will we see tomorrow? To quote a coke addled Lex Luger "WHO KNOWS!?"

Let's take a look at the card...

AEW Bash at the Beach
January 15th, 2020
Live from Watsco Center in Coral Cables, Florida

Four Way Tag Team Match to determine #1 Contenders for AEW Tag Team Titles
The Young Bucks Vs Santana & Ortiz Vs The Elite (Kenny Omega and Adam Page) Vs Best Friends (with Orange Cassidy)

Jon Moxley Vs Sammy Guevara

PAC Vs Darby Allin

Six Man Tag Team Match
MJF and The Butcher & The Blade (with The Bunny and Wardlow) Vs DDP, Dustin Rhodes, and QT Marshall

The Nightmare Collective (Awesome Kong and Mel) (with Brandi Rhodes) Vs Hikaru Shida and Kris Statlander

That doesn't sound too bad. Besides, BATB in winter is so endearingly WCW.

That said, the only Kong match I want is that Aja Kong match they started build for then never mentioned again.

The entrance way better be above a pool. Also, someone should be thrown in said pool.

4way tag is going to be dull for me. I hate Omega/Page, the Bucks are doing probably the worst stretch of work in their career, Santana/Ortiz aren't being utilized properly, and Best Friends are best used as a comedy act and not the "SERIOUS WRESTLERS" they're trying to be in AEW.

Six-man could be solid, I suppose, but "retired for years" DDP has no right going over anybody on the heel side, making it either a foregone conclusion or potentially Hogan/Bischoff TNA levels of dumb. QT also has no reason to be there other than to take the fall, so thanks for that?

Nightmare Collective are shit. Period. If Brandi wasn't married to one of the EVPs then she'd be a telemarketer somewhere. It takes a lot to get me to not want to see Kong kill bitches dead, but she found a way. Not even Statlander/Shida can save it for me.

PAC is boring, but Allin is fucking awesome. Gonna be fun.

Mox/Guevara will be the match I'm most looking forward to this week. Hopefully it's after a PIP commercial break so we get Guevara doing another cue card promo, especially if it ends with him hyping whatever movie is on afterward.

I'm assuming they're saving any pool action for next week's show, taped from Chris Jericho's Rock N Wrestling Rager cruise ship.

The opening segment of this week's BTE with the Buck's mocking people criticizing their "year of hard work" was the most embarrassing thing I've seen in a while. Not a good look.

I know it's probably not in the cards but I would be really interested in seeing a more gritty, violent show on HBO.  I get the 2nd show will probably be on TBS or TruTv.  But, something totally different on HBO would be cool.

Meltzer reporting it's for $175M for the deal with TNT having the option to pick it up in 2024 for a significantly increased price.

Additionally Dark isn't going anywhere and this will be another hour in addition to that for 4 hours total per week.

Shows just how much the TV landscape has changed where a network is proudly touting numbers that people made fun of Impact for getting just a decade ago.  I'm leery at them getting another hour, though.

The good: Clearly TNT is happy with the ratings they're getting for AEW so we'll have more places for guys to work for a few years.

The bad: Four hour TV tapings are going to lead to most crowds absolutely not giving a shit for whatever show gets taped last.

AEW currently airs another series called “AEW Dark” weekly on YouTube. That show typically features matches that take place before or after the “Dynamite” telecast. Reilly says that show will now migrate over to TNT and be built up into a network show.

Literally the worst team possible just won. Decent match, crowd was noticeably quieter after Orange Cassidy left. Glad that AEW realized "Proud & Powerful" was a stupid name and are just going with Santana/Ortiz. Kenny is still garbage.

It's painfully obvious that Brandi, and people in power's inability to tell her no, is the single biggest issue in AEW.

And why the fuck is this match going through a commercial break?

Set up the DVR so I can watch Mox/Guevara. Start playing Division 2. Switch back to find Brandi working and the crowd not giving two shits. Back to gaming.

Outside of the one horrendous women's segment I thought it was a good show.

I'm going to be very curious what they do with the extra 45 million a year.  You could really bolster your roster by picking up a some big names as they become available.

Also curious to see what the 2nd show looks like.  Instead of stuff taped before and after Dynamite I wish it was a studio show featuring promos and matches.  I think a lot of the people could use some of that work.

Also, if this week didn't make it evident nothing will.  They need to totally revamp the women's division.  I understand they want to be inclusive, but it's just killing the show week in and out.  Putting people on tv when they aren't ready isn't inclusive it's just stupid.  I would pull the division, take the next 6 months and find the best talent, use some of that 45 million and sign them, and bring it back over the summer.

They caught a bad break with Kong being scratched at the last minute. Where they really screwed up was making that women’s match a two-segment deal anyway. Cut that shit down to 5 minutes at most, and stretch the other segments as needed.

Otherwise, though, I enjoyed everything else. Darby Allin’s shoulder is going to hurt like hell tomorrow morning.

Watching the DVR off/on around work. Decent Janela promo, I really wish he was better in the ring because he could be a solid midcard face.

Women's match was total FF material, looks like I didn't miss anything. Brandi is shit in the ring. Mel reminds me of Tamina. At least the right team went over, I guess?

OH GOODIE, FOLLOWED BY A DARK ORDER SEGMENT. CAN'T WAIT FOR THE RATINGS BREAKDOWN NOW THAT THE TWO WORST ACTS WEREN'T PIGGYBACKING OFF THE BEST.

Sammy Guevara is coming out and I'm gonna pick this back up later. Don't wanna miss everybody's new favorite wrestler.

Yeah Sammy is the person who has won me over the most and is probably my favorite of those I wasn't previously familiar with. Love his ring work, love his gimmick, love the new cue card bit, love his facial expressions in the background... everything. He should be their initial secondary champion if they ever have one.

I wanna see Darby hit a Coffin Drop out of nowhere on Guevara while he's doing one of his cue card promos.

Taz is officially All Elite. I'm guessing he's gonna be the permanent color commentator on Dark now that it's on TNT. Maybe just me but I'd rather have him on Dynamite than either of the old dawgs. Or I guess even older dawgs since Taz has got to be in his 50s now.

Mel's performance in that match was stunning to me: she looked like a much more polished wrestler even when she debuted in SHIMMER, just barely out of wrestling school. How'd she get that much worse in ten years?

I think not airing a new episode New Year's Day (when AEW had a hot show) really fudged things up for NXT. They've been down in the 700k range last few episodes since.
