I was shocked when I saw a tape of Johnson in WWC in 87 or 88 at just how fast he had let himself go.

A year or 2 ago when the Ali/Inoki match was being remembered everywhere, I first learned of Rocky's match in 1976 with Lawler where Memphis pretended Johnson was a "real" boxer and the area had its own Wrestler vs. Boxer bout (IIRC Weigh ins and all). I was fascinated by the carnyism.

The Rock revealed on IG that Rocky died very suddenly from pulmonary embolism.

Random note: I always forget that Rocky Johnson is Canadian. Nova Scotian no less. Descendant of freed slaves who joined the British Army during The American Revolution, in exchange for their freedom. Interesting!

That can't possibly be legit, unless Vince woke up and decided to burn his relationship with Rock to the ground.

Wouldn't surprise me if these were jokes "for the boys," if anything.

There is no way that's true considering the source.

I've heard people speculating Pat has gone senile, and that was his issue at the funeral.

What Vince allegedly said wasn’t really  offensive at all,  that’s a standard traditional thing to say at a funeral that the best thing the deceased ever did in their lives was find their significant other and had kids. If that was the only thing he said, that’s also weird but Vince isn’t the type to have a long speech when there’s nothing to gain from it and his power strut is just his regular walk.   Let’s not go shit on Vince here but Pat? Sure.

Death brings out some really strange behavior from the grieving. Tack on the advanced age of guys that spent years bumping and juicing and its not only tasteless, but not surprising.

I've been following the updates, just shaking my head. Sad for the survivors, sad for the state of Pat's mind.

vince saying that he was a great wrestler and the greatest thing he ever did was marrying ata and having kids isn't insulting at all really. And yeah Pat is a 79 year old wrestler so the odds of him being in bad shape are higher than anyone that age normally.

Also apparently the family is totally ok with everything and that's all that should matter:

Hannibal confirmed that Al Rosen, who spoke at the funeral, told him that the Johnson Family was not offended by anything that Pat Patterson or Vince McMahon did at Rocky Johnson’s funeral.
Quote
“He told me that nobody in the family was offended by Vince’s behavior. So let’s just make that clear. The family was not offended at all by Vince’s speech. It sounds like, yes he strutted on and off, but Vince is a character anyway and he made a little joke. So, the family wasn’t offended.”

Vince's remarks just seem like a typical "funny" old man remark at a funeral. And like Hawk said, his Mr. McMahon walk is his regular walk.

I think Pat Patterson basically retired from public life 3 or 4 years back so his behavior is sad but not surprising.

RE: The Johnson family.

It seems appropriate to remember that when Eddy died, Chavo Sr went to Vince at the funeral and apologize to him for Eddy's death causing possible PR issues, etc.

Thankful for all the context that is coming out.

To point:

I did my Grandfather's eulogy at his funeral and cut a few jokes, some at his expense and some that he'd previously made at the expense of others. Sometimes that's needed at such a sad affair.

The only thing that kept me sane at my best friend's 4 hour wake and then funeral was the frequent banter and joking (which, once the fuckin bagpipes started none of that mattered).

At my brother-in-law's funeral the facility requested everyone leave the room after last respects so that my sister and niece could have one last moment with him. As I hugged my sister, bawling her eyes out, I whispered, "yeah, you still ugly though." She about went into convulsions cry laughing into my shoulder.

I spent the majority of my mother's memorial service cracking jokes about her weaker parenting moments. Shit we do when we're mourning or trying to lighten a mood, you know?

Pretty much every funeral I've ever been to a large portion of it is ribbing on the deceased and telling jokes.  It is just remembering the good times and using humour to get through a rough situation.  Perfectly normal.
