If TMZ is wrong, I'll feel dumber than I did when I predicted The Warriors would be contenders this season.

This is huge. I'm holding out hope that it isn't true. TMZ were the first one's to break Michael Jackson's death 10 years ago, though.

Variety is reporting it too FWIW.

If true, this is the first genuinely shocking celebrity death in a long, long time. He still seemed like he was in the prime of his life and there's occasional rumors of him coming back.

Mamba out. :(

That was one of my first thoughts too. His mom in the hospital and now this. Fuck what a horrible weekend.

Woj is reporting so I'm going to say this is 100% true.

There are so many typos itt I would normally joke about but I can’t because I know it’s because you guys are as shocked as I am. I wasn’t even a big fan but the guy was an example of putting in the work and getting the fucking most you could out of what you had in this world. I’m not talking about sports, I just mean as an inspiration to anyone who wants to succeed at anything. I guess I am a big fan of that.

As a person entering his golden years, what a fucking tragedy. with the means and intentions he had of doing good in this world, this loss will affect more than people realize. I feel so bad for his wife and especially his kids, robbed of a father. I hope his family can recover from this.

RIP

Kobe was one of the most complicated, controversial, and unique characters in NBA history. There will never ever ever be anyone like him again.

It really is a genuine bummer that we don't get to see the rest of his 2nd act.

Fuck this.

So many pieces of shit out there that could have died and instead we lose KOBE?!

He is exactly who kept me into basketball after MJ started his retirement tour. Him and MJ in that all star game was a bigger highlight to me than Pedro facing off against McGwire and Sosa in the MLB version. I know endorsements are irrelevant at a time like this, but Kobe as a spokesman for sprite had me drinking the shit out of that beverage.

Even in the tail end of his career I still saw him as that fresh young player. Fucking shittiest of shit news to wake up to.

His second act was very likely going to be as a WNBA coach once his daughter got to that point. He liked women’s basketball so much and was passing that on to his daughter, taking her around the country to watch games because she got him back to caring about basketball. And now they’re both dead.

Toronto Raptors purposely took a 24 second violation after winning tipoff, to pay tribute to Kobe.

Edit- It was in San Antonio too. Class move all around.

We aren't even a month separated from David Stern dying. What a devastating month for the NBA. 2020 is shaping up to be to basketball what 2016 was to music in terms of notable deaths.

I WILL GET MADE FUN OF FOR BRINGING THIS UP

With that being said, I wonder if #8 and/or #24 in one of the Royal Rumbles tonight does some sort of Kobe tribute?

There are a lot of things that are really bothering me, and making me really upset, but probably the thing sticking with me the most is when I was a kid in Jr. High on the basketball team. Everyone wanted to be Kobe, there were no exceptions. I remember people arguing about wearing his number to the point nobody was allowed to wear it. In practice goofing off shooting Kobe fadeaways. Everyone trying to buy his shoes, to wear his jersey.

Then he keeps playing until I'm 28 years old. The last hero of a childhood, the last guy standing, until he isn't standing. I don't really care what people think of me but this is totally devastating. I have never been and never will be again more upset about a famous person dying than I am right now. It's going to be hard to even turn on a Lakers game again, and of course I will, but it's going to be tough. Kobe Bryant is, was, and always will be the Lakers. He doesn't even get to give his Hall of Fame speech, to coach his daughter, to do any of that stuff. This fucking sucks.

I think Finals MVP makes more sense for this.

Anyway, I'm not gonna bring it up cause y'all are gonna get mad at me for mentioning it on the day of his death. But sometime in the next few days somebody should bring it up.

I thought liberals were all about innocent until proven guilty and know about how black males are unfairly targeted by the justice system regardless of their status in the world. Especially when an entire department draws up an order for shirts depicting the accused black man being lynched. But I guess not. After the fact, if it did or didn't happen, the guy was a model of how life should be lived. People shouldn't forget that.
