My guess is within 2 years of dropping the PPVs that the network would go away entirely.  From what I've heard it's not cheap to keep running, and I just don't see how you would keep enough subscribers.

Maybe they would just move a lot of their older content to Netflix/Hulu etc...

Apparently the two co-presidents who just got let go were the biggest architects of the Network so take that as you will...

No one buys Blu-Rays or DVDs anymore, so without the Network all those content libraries wouldn't be worth much.  I mean, I can't see Netflix wasting bandwidth on Survivor Series 1993.

Even when I used to get deflated with the current PPVs, I used to keep the Network for NXT.  When I got really down on the product this fall, closest I ever came to canceling the network happened now that NXT is on TV.

As much as I love having all the classic content available, I honestly rarely get around to watching it.  If they do a couple dollar price bump, no problem.  If they do something insane or jump to another service I don’t have, I don’t have a ton of incentive.

In other news, Ted’s other son and former FCW tag champ Brett DiBiase made the New York Times:

I'd 100% cancel the network and go back to pirating the PPVs if this happened. Before the network, I hadn't spent bought a PPV since uh... WM 26?

If WWE doesn't think this won't crater the subscription numbers for WWE Network then they are DUMB

When they have an old senile man in charge of the company, stuff like this happens

"Prior to their investors' call Thursday morning, WWE released their 2019 Q4 numbers, showing 18% revenue growth to $322.8 million, good for their highest quarterly revenue in company history."

What a fool!  Following trends that show rights fees have granted his company the most money ever in a quarter.  IMPEACH!!

Following the company’s release of its Q4 and full-year 2019 financials earlier this morning, WWE stock sunk sub-$40 per share in premarket trading. When the U.S. market opened at 9:30 a.m. ET, the company’s stock was at $40.24 per share, down 18% from the $49 it closed on Wednesday afternoon.

Dusty always said they were making movies anyway....  (Adding to my point above) https://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/showthread.php?275827

"So there's the dilemma: seek a studio or financier to partner on the project, holding on to various rights and territories, or make the safe deal with Netflix (which would not seem quite so safe if the film were a huge hit and it already was sold). Studios selling to streamers is an accelerating trend: Paramount is looking into dedicating a division to that purpose, while a source with knowledge of the situation says Sony's TriStar label is devoting resources to stream*ing deals. And indie studio A24 inked a multi-year agreement in 2018 to produce a slate of films for Apple.

Even Warners may sell to outsiders despite its parent, WarnerMedia, allocating massive resources to its own streaming service, HBO Max. Disney and Universal are likely to sit this out for now, making movies for their own services, Disney+ (launching Nov. 12) and Peacock."

“Well, we have a lot of options. We could continue on as we are now, with a … free tier and a more enhanced paid tier,” McMahon said during WWE’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2019 earnings conference call.

I haven't subscribed in a while but they have a free tier now?

He also talked about potentially adding advertisements to the Network.....I could have sworn they already had them for stuff like Snickers the last time I watched it

I think the idea of selling the rights to the PPVs to another streaming service is interesting.  Maybe in addition to the $ they think it could get more eyeballs on the product by having the big events front and center on Prime or Disney+ (more likely Peacock like someone said).  I won't immediately shit on it until I see the details.  It could totally kill the network though if not done the right way, and I don't have a lot of faith in them.

People are lazy and creatures of habit.  If WWE can put Mania on a service that a lot of people already have and don't have to sign up for another service it's worth doing if they money they get for the fees defrays (or even eliminates) the loss in additional Network revenue they would normally get for it.

The thing is, because those PPV's are now worth basically nothing and the product fucking sucks, I don't think anyone's going to go back to buying them.

lmao this is what I was thinking too, WWE basically conditioned their fans to believe these events are worth ten bucks a month, good luck getting them to pay 50-60.

I can't believe a guy can be that big, and jump around like he does what a great athlete!

Just like Netflix, replace all the big shows you lose with documentaries and imports (indies). Great Model.

Read a recap of Sasha’s appearance on the Corey Graves podcast today.  She did the whole thing in kayfabe which meant nothing really interesting although the one snippet that made me laugh was she said she hopes she is on he Wrestlemania preshow this year because the show is so long, that way she can be done early and the pay is the same.

I was gonna make fun of the idea of the multi part RUTHLESS AGGRESSION documentary but honestly, while I think it is a VERY niche idea, I think it'll be interesting to see WWE go somewhat in depth on an era that isn't the '80s wrestling boom or the Attitude era.

Interesting idea (though the "Ruthless Aggression Era" is not a real thing that happened) but I expect that much like the highly disappointing Monday Night Wars this series will heavily lean on repurposed content from years-old DVD documentary features.

I may get accused of drinking WWE's corporate Kool Aid but I *do* think RUTHLESS AGGRESSION is a (very dumbly named) era WWE. I would say starting from the first brand split (or Austin walking out a month or two later) and ending with the start of the TV PG Era in 2008.

I think of it as an era too even if it was never a heavily marketed thing compared to the Attitude Era. It doesn't fit into the Attitude Era or the current era.

Wonder if he will throw those mini footballs in jail

Ciampa supposedly is legit hurt and questionable for Takeover: Portland now.  Guess if he can’t go, they luck into slotting Dream against Cole.

Main thing it probably hurts is the main event of the NXT house show I’m going to tonight.  Main match was supposed to be DIY vs Fish/O’Reilly.  Cole, Shayna and Dunne were previously the biggest names not advertised but the recent ad talking about all the TV talent there also cites BABATUNDE.

I can buy the Ruthless Aggression period in hindsight. I have no idea what that brand extension to, like, 2007-8 would be called. Evolution?

This is the first time they seem to have to bring up Benoit. They won't, of course, but it's a massive elephant in the room and ostensibly when it all died.

I don't see how they can review this era and not acknowledge the business downturn due to there being no competition and WWE just not putting on must-see TV. They'll find a way of course but it'll be interesting if they talk about their faults in all of this.

I don't define the era as lasting all the way into 2007-2008. I feel like Ruthless Aggression ended right at the second brand split in '04. So a week or so after WMXX.

As to what you want to call the period of 2004-2013, I have no clue.

They acknowledge the New Generation wasn't most popular era in some retrospectives, right? I can't imagine that they would pretend RUTHLESS AGGRESSION era was as successful as Attitude Era but they're not going to be like "Boy, the business sure went into the crapper during the '00s!", folks.

I don't see ignoring Benoit as that much of an elephant in the room tbh. He was a main eventer/World Champion level guy for like 7 months out of that period. They SHOULD acknowledge him but I don't feel like that they have to (and they obviously won't).

It's interesting to think of the post Attitude era eras. Of course, for a lot of us, everything since '01 has just been a big jumble haha

I feel like with the New Generation era, it's a bit different. Saying that they sucked pre-Attitude Era tells a better narrative for them. It ties into them being sympathetic before "valiantly fighting back" against WCW and winning the war in the end.

With Ruthless Aggression, I doubt they'll say "We were the last company standing....and then we sucked again for a quite a few years!"

Rumors that Taynara Conti disappeared off NXT a few weeks ago because she walked out on the company, presumably over money from earliest reports.  Other sources are claiming she is gone and she has her real name on her Twitter profile now, though I am not sure if it was before and plenty other active talents are doing that.

Smackdown is advertising a #1 contender Fatal 4-way for the Smackdown Women’s Championship - Bliss vs Naomi vs Carmella vs Dana

205 Live advertising a 3 way between Jordan Devlin, Lio Rush and Tony Nese - good to see Tony around to eat the pin

Guess this means I don’t get Cruiserweights at the NXT show tonight (maybe Garza) but hoping I get Devlin when Smackdown is here in two weeks

I get your point for the immediate.  But, I always viewed the Network as more a longterm financial move.  If they do this I think the Network dies within 2 years.  And these streaming services are creating a bubble with the prices being paid for content.  And you may say, "Well, you should jump on that and sign a deal."  But, what the hell happens when you need to renegotiate and the Network is toast because you cannibalized it?  You have no leverage and no where to go.

All these streaming services other than Netflix are losing money like crazy.  They're paying for content at such high rates to get people over initially, but thus far it hasn't worked for any of them.  I don't think a lot of these companies fully understand that Netflix popped because it was finally a way to ditch the high cost of cable.  But, if you have to pay for 10 different streaming services it becomes cable, and people are just going to pick one or two.  And if that's the case the high prices being paid for this stuff is going to end.

Below is from an article talking about it:

"ESPN+ seems unlikely for a WWE partner as they have lost a ton of money, despite the growth. Parent company Disney has announced losses of $693 million for the year, which includes ESPN+, Hulu and start-up costs for Disney Plus. DAZN also seems unlikely as their situation has changed because of how much money they have lost so far with so many large deals, mainly when it comes to boxing content that doesn't come close to being covered with subscription revenue. However, as noted, these "major players" are willing to lose a lot of money with the idea that it's a start-up, and it'll bring growth in the long-term. WWE's premium content could draw a pretty penny as just about all major sports events are already locked up with other platforms."

I see this as more of a way to inflate the worth of the stock after so many losses this past year. Word gets 'round that Disney or Amazon are looking to purchase, people buy because it could be a decent payout, and their numbers look good heading into FY 2020.

Next year’s Mania location will be announced tomorrow at 9 AM Pacific.  It is expected to be SoFi Stadium in Southern Cal.

I just started reading this thread about the WWE Network. Here's my take just on personal viewing habits.

I am the 1-5% that would probably pay up to $14.99 per month with the same features. I enjoy watching old PPV's the month of the PPV. I usually watch the current PPV's the night of, but when they are 4+ hours I usually spread it over into Monday.

Before the Network, the ex-wife and I usually ordered 4 PPV's per year (Rumble, Mania and the random one here or there). I just don't see a world where they give us all PPV's at the $9.99 model for 5+ years that I will go back to spending $50 or more on a PPV plus having the Network.

The real problem will be that so many people will totally abandon ship if the PPV's go elsewhere. I would maybe buy Rumble and Mania as a standalone but that would probably be the cost of one whole year of the Network right there.

I think the best thing they could do right now is a modest bump to $10.99 per month and then study the trends for a year.
