They would’ve needed to put it together but I feel like if ESPN could’ve done like a Pop Up Video for these.

Would blow some casuals minds that HHH’s entrance harem was Charlotte, Sasha and Alexa.

I watching Wrestlemania X right now. Donnie Wahlberg was the ring announcer for Luger/Yoko is so random. Also Luger/Yoko should have opened so Yoko could rest for the main event.

Watching WM XIX. The camera following Austin from behind during his entrance, down Safeco's winding aisle, is one of the cooler shots they've ever done. Can't remember seeing many like it before. In the context of it being Austin's last match, it's just neat.

Watching XXVI. Is Bret-Vince the worst Mania match ever? It certainly has to be the worst "big" Mania match ever.

I have a hard time considering that to even be a match tbh. While letting Bret end his WWE legacy on his own terms is a great idea in theory, I would really strongly prefer to pretend his 2010 run never happened (outside of a few moments).

For me, two standouts for Worst Mania match ever are Bossman-Undertaker HIAC at XV and Rick Rude Vs Jake Roberts at WrestleMania IV.

I liked some of Bret's punches and Vince took that big bump off The Hart Dynasty so that alone makes it better than Lawler vs Cole from 27.

Started watching VII and Gorilla Monsoon obviously be told in his ear who Macaulay Culkin is is a great unintentional comedy moment.

I just love to imagine angry Vince yelling in Gorilla's headset about Home Alone

Watching WMX7. TLC2 holds up so well. The spear from the top of the ladder is still one of the most "holy shit" moments I've ever seen in a big match.

Watched Rock/Austin for the first time in probably a decade, another great match. It flopped in hindsight but it took a lot of balls booking an Austin heel turn there. If it was anywhere but Texas (and the Rock wasn't leaving), it would've worked well. They'd never have the balls to do that these days.

The story of Austin being driven so insane by the fact that he can no longer maintain his hold on the top so he has to strike a deal with the devil is a great concept IMO and I think Austin even did a great job as a heel in that '01 run. But there was no way that people wanted to boo him at that time.

It might have worked if they had tried it 6 months to a year later but I think it was still too soon after his comeback from a neck injury.

They tried everything to get people to boo Austin: changing his theme music, beating up JR, him sucking up to Vince, having him cry in front of Angle, etc. I commend the effort and commitment but yeah, no one's ever gonna boo the guy.

Wrestlemania X-8

1.   Did you watch this event live? Yes
3.   Did you enjoy the opening montage? Yes
4.   Favorite match on the show? Hogan/Rock
5.   Favorite non-match segment? The Hardcore Championship changing hands.
6.   Do you think the right match went on last? Hell no. I know Jericho and HHH said it was the wrong move. I know HHH back then thought his comeback and title win needed to main event.
7.   Is there a segment they would not air in 2020 (Not counting comments on commentary)? I don't think so.
8.   Would you ever re-watch the entire show again? Yeah I'm in the process of it. I finished everything through Hogan/Rock.

Flair didn't take the Last Ride from the Undertaker, which made me think, I don't think Flair's ever taken any type of power bomb type move.  He's wrestled Vader, Sid, Nash, Hall, and probably a few others with a power bomb variation as finisher.

Austin on his podcast said that his match with Hall wasn't good. I think all Steve did was punches, a Lou Thesz Press, and five Stunners on Hall. Hogan/Austin wouldn't have been a good match. Hogan/Rock is such a good match because the crowd was into it and they did crowd work. Today's wrestlers perform in a vacuum where the crowd doesn't exist.

Flair couldnt flatback after the plane crash so probably not.

The heel turn bombed from a money/logic standpoint, but I still think it was some of Austin's best work of his career.  I find his promos and character much more entertaining than 98/99. He was so committed to it and I never knew what he would do next.

I think that is another reason why the heel turn flopped. I think WWE and Austin way too broadly tried to say "THIS GUY IS A HEEL NOW!" If they had tried some more subtle strokes ala Bret's heel turn in '97, maybe it would have had a marginally better shot at working.

I say this every year in this thread...although you lose the Mania moment, having Austin lose the challenge, then doing the Vince angle 24 hours later on RAW would have made the Austin turn make a bit more sense. Rock and Austin rematched that night anyway IIRC, with HHH getting involved and Rock hitting a gusher.
Maybe losing to HHH at NWO was supposed to have shaken Austin's confidence?

So I was kind of stupid but I thought Vince turned face by helping Austin. The people in Houston were cheering for Austin and wanted him to win.

Partially because I didn’t want to sift through title lineages and partially because I’ve always been a “one company, one world champion” guy, I just chose one match that was for a world title on my card. I guess the Universal title is its own separate deal, and you could say the same for the world title that was introduced with Triple H in 2002 before there was the 2nd unification. After that, all bets are off.

Figuring out how to use Austin was the hardest. Didn't realize til now how few Mania matches he's actually had.

Rewatched Bret v Shawn for the first time in forever. Really weird match to rate. The work might be the crispest/cleanest in history of Wrestlemania. Didn't see any botches, everything was tight, both guys sold really well (minus Shawn's kip up) and the last few minutes are amazing.

If this was anything but an Iron Man match, it might be one of the best matches in WWE history. But it's an Iron Man match and as an Iron Man match, it kinda sucks. Neither guy shows any urgency to score falls and both pass up several count out decisions for no reason whatsoever. Last few minutes are great though.

Yah, really weird match looking back on it.

Yeah. Bret/Shawn match is super weird. Mechanically, it's fantastic but I think they were SO focused on the mechanics and everything looking clean & realistic that they forgot the storytelling aspects. Which is kind of surprising since wasn't Pat Patterson an agent for that match?

The Iron Man puts me to sleep. Shawn should have scored an early fall and the Sharpshooter spot at the end should had let Bret tie it.

I think the end is bad too. Bret walks away and then comes back into the ring and gets pinned in a minute.

I can sort of buy Bret getting beat within a minute in OT. He's clearly frustrated and annoyed that he had to come back to begin with, so he's off his game to a degree.

I thought Bret/Shawn became a pretty good match after the first 25 minutes, but their match at Survivor Series 97 before the screwjob was way better.

Opener: HHH vs. Warrior - this will get the crowd hyped up for a great show.
Bret vs. Owen  - one of the best back and forth mat battles you'll see, keeps the crowd hot.
Piper vs. Goldust - Piper turns heel at the end, this is 2020.
Taker Vs Jake - nice little squash with all their big spots featuring two legends.
Shawn vs Razor - one of my fav matches ever.
Strike Force vs. Brainbusters - this match is really good and the post match angle is too.
Trish Stratus vs Mickie James - Underrated contender for GOAT Mania Women's Title match
Hulk vs The Rock - defines epicness of mania more than any other match imo
TLC Tag Title Match Mania X-Seven - Need at least one ridiculous spotfest, might as well use the tag title match.
Butterbean vs Bart Gunn - good cooldown that still hits you harder than bart gunn got hit for the first knockdown, not as hard as he got hit for the second though.
Macho vs. Flair - two legends, with the world title on the line, a great main event.

edit: just realized I have eleven matches, I'll use the interviews of the celebrities from Mania 7 scattered throughout the show to make up for the 12th match.

I can't believe a guy can be that big, and jump around like he does what a great athlete!

Looking back... Hogan vs. Sid at WrestleMania 8 always felt like a let down "big" main event coming off the heels of Hogan/Savage, Hogan/Warrior, and even Hogan/Slaughter with the patriotic bent behind it at WrestleMania 7.

I always felt like it really wasn't until WrestleMania 12 that we had that "big WM match" feel again with the Iron Match match as much as I liked the Diesel/Shawn bout from WM 11.

Bigelow/Taylor was definitely presented as a big match spectacle. I watched all the raws leading up to WM 11 last year and they were promoting it like crazy with press conferences and sit down interviews.

I've mentioned it in previous Mania rewatch chats but I don't think any Mania drops off more in the 2nd half than VIII. First half of that show is great and seems like headed to maybe GOAT WM (especially at that time) but the 2nd half nosedives.

Really nothing remotely good happens after that intermission.

That whole Rourke angle was odd and sort of slightly ruined a perfect two year stretch for Jericho. A match with Rourke probably would have been worse than the Legends gauntlet (and we would've missed out on the kickin' Steamboat farewell run) but it would've been the definitive mainstream breakthrough moment for Jericho that would push him to the status of a Cena.

And it's not like a WrestleMania XXV match would have done much worse for Mickey Rourke's career than his choice of projects after The Wrestler.

And Fandango Vs Daniel Day Lewis would've totally stolen the show at WrestleMania XXIX!

Also IRT to WrestleMania XI and XII. XII was obviously a better show but XI felt like more of a WrestleMania. Not much to distinguish WrestleMania XII as THE important show besides HBK's entrance & win, Hollywood Backlot Brawl, and The Warrior return (importance of that has way diminished in retrospect too). A lot of the card just feels like it could be on a In Your House.

That was the strangest card layout I can ever remember for a PPV. I will say that putting Savage-Flair in the middle made me think Flair was hanging on to the belt with a fuck finish—every WM had a happy ending up to that point, and the title match had never not gone on last—so I was shocked when Savage actually won.

I'm glad them reairing WrestleMania 32 has sparked another mini discussion of why the hell Tatanka made a random appearance in the battle royal?

Like I went to the bathroom before the match and I don't think there's been a more dream like moment in my time as a wrestling fan when I see Tatanka in that ring and THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN SHAQ ENTERS.

I'm still not entirely sure that battle royal happened and wasn't a dream.

It's just like Sunny's random appearance in the WM25 Women's Battle Royal. She didn't get her own entrance and several minutes into the match, the commentator's just casually go "oh hey, there's Sunny!"

Changed my women’s match.  Forgot about Trish vs Mickie somehow, maybe my two favorite women from that period

Yeah "CrackAddict" didn't carry the same gravitas that "My Way" did.

IT HAD EVEN MORE GRAVITAS!

Watched WrestleMania 7 for the first time (that I can recall since I was like 6-8 years old). Some blah filler matches but what a solid PPV with some good matches (Tag Titles, Slaughter/Hogan) and classics in Savage/Warrior and Roberts/Martel.

I shot out a tweet & mentioned it in chat but that Blindfold Match should be in every up & coming wrestler's tape library on how to work a crowd to tell the story of a match. Roberts using cheers to locate Martel via finger points, Martel playing up the goof role by executing moves that miss, and even incorporating the referee in a spot but Martel recognizing the shirt was genius.

I watched VII this weekend too. Bossman/Perfect starts off like it's going to be a great match but really peters out. Too bad we never really got more of that feud but I guess Perfect took extended hiatus after Mania cause of his fucked up back.

I'm glad most of the people on TRTSM can appreciate the blindfold match. It really is a great piece of work and I want to slap cynical teen smark me for following that doofus Scott Keith in thinking it was one of the worst WM matches of all time.

Yes, the Roberts-Martel blindfold match is underrated. It was the perfect blowoff to their near-half year feud. Psychology and audience involvement couldn't have been any better.

They should have (especially with Andre's interference) given the Boss Man a couple months with the IC belt. Let Perfect recupe a bit before Mountie helps him regain it on Superstars in May or June and transition out after Summerslam vs Bret.

Filler yes, but there's no bad match at VII. Even Dino Bravo bumped!

The match is a pretty solid spotfest, but holy shit the Ali vs Cedric match at 34 might have the worst HBK/HHH style of dramatic talking during a match I've ever seen. They are doing the "STAY DOWN STAY DOWN" stuff during a commercial where the match is in a little box in the corner of the screen. Ali yelling he's the heart of 205 Live and Cedric yelling he's the soul while the crowd is relatively silent. It's the wrestling version of a Dashboard Confessional song.
