Deadliest Catch
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:33:27 AM »
New season started Tuesday and it was one of the crazier opening episodes.

Spoiler: show
The filming of the rescue was great.  Massive kudos to the guys filming and doing the rescuing.  And what was up with the pansy man shove?  If you're that pissed, throw a haymaker at least!

Why don't they just catch a boy crab and a girl crab and breed them where it's safe? Idiots.

Not sure why you spoilered that, Harley, but that was totally a bitchmade fight between those two.

The Time Bandit is my favorite boat based on an earlier season where the deckhand kept smashing into this plastic tub that was sliding around, so he threw it overboard and shot the fuck out of it with an assault rifle.

The Time Bandit guys are always playing with guns, M80's and other explosives. I have always enjoyed this show but watching this season seems a bit surreal knowing Captain Phil's fate.

Gotta love the new boat's crew being slow as molasses and then seeing the captain bitching his guy out over not following orders.  Also gotta love the Time Bandit... third year in a row with regards to placement, some of the crew mocking him, then it starts paying off.

Jonathan can't be the only one to figure out that the best place to fish is where the crabs feed.  My favorite boat is the Northwestern because of Sig and Edgar.

I agree.  Sig and Edgar are awesome.  I actually read Sig's book in one sitting yesterday.  Pretty decent book.  It gives a lot of detail of how their father, their entire community and then they became fishermen.

Gotta love that the Kodiak's skipper came back this season and his whole experience has been an abject failure.  Also loved Sig's chit chat about Edgar taking over and Edgar's silent, "Fuck that idea."

Did anyone watch the latest episode?  I knew that Phil had the stroke while on the boat but I had no idea that he had it so soon after learning the news about Josh.  Watching him being worked on by the EMTs was certainly hard to watch and these next few weeks are going to be difficult to watch.

You can't stop him you can only hope to contain him!

Eh, I don't know how anybody could be surprised or shocked by him having a stroke. Guy had a blood clot the size of a german chocolate cake in his lungs, like a year ago. He's lucky he made it as long as he did.

Jake being a pill junkie isn't a shocker either. I'm willing to bet that the drug use is a dirty poorly-kept secret that the show doesn't get into. I mean, there's no fucking way these guys stay awake and working like that for 48+ hours without some help. And the 20 year+ vets? They've all got to be taking pain pills, out of necessity. It's exhausting to swing a sledgehammer for a long period of time, let alone for 20 years on a pitching frozen deck of a boat.

I used to read the Deadliest Catch thread over on the TWoP boards, and one of the posters was from a fishing family.  She mentioned drug use was pretty bad back in the day - IIRC, she mentioned speed & coke.  I wouldn't doubt that it still goes on.

Yeah, pretty much.
According to last nights episode he has been sober for 18 months. Also, after watching After The Catch, I have decided that Freddy from the Cornelia Marie is my favorite deckhand. That guy is a fuckin animal.

Those are probably the only 18 months he's been sober in his life. That's what's called "substance abuse face".

Quote
"Deadliest Catch" Capts. Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand -- who were sued earlied this month by Discovery for allegedly not performing work on a planned spinoff special -- as well as Capt. Sig Hansen, issued a statement yesterday afternoon saying they are "unable" to continue on the hit adventure series due to the litigation.

The trio sent this statement to the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday afternoon: "We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in 'Deadliest Catch,'" the three crab fishermen said in a joint written statement. "It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive 'Catch' fans we have met over the years."

A statement on the status of the three stars was forthcoming, according to a Discovery spokesperson.

They resolved things and will be back.  Sounds like code for "We'll back a dump truck full of cash to your door."

I am curious what these guys get paid on top of what they get from fishing.  The Hillstrands also did a bunch of Geico commercials.

Well that's disappointing. I wanted to see how the Horde reacted to that one guy who plays Mexican Polka very loud.

He got fired. They all play Mexican Polka or Mexican Rap really loud, though. I don't want to turn this into the warehouse anthropology thread, though. The Burmese are by and large very easy-going.

The rescue scenes are always the tensest things on the show IMO.

I like the Seabrooke and its captain.  Don't care much for the Ramblin' Rose and its captain.  Pretty lukewarm on the new guy of the Cornelia Marie but he has big shoes to fill.

Good riddance to Derrick.  Guy came off like he was trying to lay down law & order (literally by the end) to a group that wasn't really asking for it and then being surprised when they mutinied against his tactics.  He also came off as like he wanted things done his way, period, despite the fact he remarked at the end that he was basically looking to captain a ship for one final run (as opposed to running the ship for future seasons, in which case his overbearing captain-y attitude could've been justified).

So now he's probably splintered the crew of the Cornelia Marie, nearly ended Jake's career as a fisherman over probable drug use (despite him being co-owner of the freaking boat he's captaining), and left them with little money on top of it all because he couldn't even do the job he was asked to do properly.

To be fair, it would be very difficult to captain a boat where two of the deckhands are part owners. I think the changes Derrick wanted to make were too drastic for that crew to handle but it may have been easier if they were on the crab. He also seemed the criticize the boys lack of knowledge and even Phil for not teaching them faster. He got silly at the end calling in the cops because he found a pot pipe and air freshener. He acted like he found a fucking meth lab in the engine room. I'm sure Jake wasn't the only one on that boat toking either.

Curious how the lower quotas (7,000 vs normal 10-12,000 IIRC) impacts things this season.  Already a decent split in terms of going after the red crab (the quota axed) vs the blue crab.

Elliot has shown that he's probably the worst captain ever on this show.  Dude has the old school "work em' to the bone" mentality and none of the skill.  He's pissed off every crew he's ever had it seems.

I laughed when I saw that Elliott sunk something like a $1.5 Million loan into his own boat and is fishing with his father!  That trifecta alone...

Also the Time Bandit is bonkers and I had to turn away when they were doing the popping(?) with a needle on Andy's finger.
