Yeah, Blur had more brains and Pulp had more heart and Suede had better fashion sense, and yeah the Gallagher bros have spent the last decade and a half systematically erasing any good will they may have ever built up, and yeah 'D'you Know What I Mean' is an awful piece of shit, but I mean, c'mon man, admit it, you like at least a couple Oasis songs. Everyone does.

Quote from: Noel Gallagher
Some of the lyrics were written when I was out of it. There's the words: 'Someday you will find me/ Caught beneath a landslide/ ln a Champagne Supernova in the sky'. That's probably as psychedelic as I'll ever get. It means different things when I'm in different moods. When I'm in a bad mood being caught beneath a landslide is like being suffocated. The song is a bit of an epic. It's about when you're young and you see people in groups and you think about what they did for you and they did nothing. As a kid, you always believed the Sex Pistols were going to conquer the world and kill everybody in the process. Bands like The Clash just petered out. Punk rock was supposed to be the revolution but what did it do? Fuck all. The Manchester thing was going to be the greatest movement on earth but it was fuck all. When we started we decided we weren't going to do anything for anybody, we just thought we'd leave a bunch of great songs. But some of the words are about nothing. One is about Bracket The Butler who used to be on Camberwick Green, or Chipley or Trumpton or something. He used to take about 20 minutes to go down the hall. And then I couldn't think of anything that rhymed with 'hall' apart from 'cannonball'. so I wrote 'Slowly walking down the hall/ Faster than a cannonball' and people were like, 'Wow, fuck , man'. There's also the line 'Where were you while we were getting high?' because that's what we always say to each other. But the number of people who've started clubs called Champagne Supernova is fucking unbelievable. And the album isn't even released yet.

I saw the "world premier" Live Forever video at like 3 in the afternoon after school one day back when MTV still used to play videos during the day, before I had any clue who these guys were, and thought it was fucking awesome.

That never really became a big hit, and the album didn't really yield any more notable singles, but then Definitely Maybe blew the fuck up with like what, 4 or 5 hit songs?

And that was their peak.  Apparently they're still gods in the UK and all of their albums are beloved, but really....they fell apart after 96/97 or whatever

Nostalgia stemming from when those two good songs—I assume we're both thinking of the same two songs—were hits.

Two good songs.

I count at least four all time classics in this thread alone, so I think you better re-crunch those numbers, bruv.

1. Don't Look Back In Anger
2. Supersonic
3. Live Forever
4. Cigarettes & Alcohol

And I personally love 'Champagne Supernova', but I can see how some people might think it's an overblown bombastic mess.

Live Forever was off Definitely Maybe. That was their first album.

What's the Story Morning Glory is the one that blew up with all the hits.

FU guys who hate this or Morning Glory

Look into the wall of my mind's eye
I think I know, but I don't know why
The questions are the answers you might need
Coming in a mess going out in style
I ain't good-looking but I'm someone's child
No-one can give me the air that's mine to breathe
I met my maker
I made him cry
And on my shoulder he asked me why
His people won't fly through the storm
I said "Listen up man, they don't even know you're born"

FUCK YES

After listening to it like 20 times since making this thread last night, I'm starting to think that 'Don't Look Back In Anger' might be one of the five best songs of the 90s.

They're one of the few bands that have several B-Sides that I love as much as their album made material.

Let's All Make Believe is up there as one of my favorite songs of theirs, period.

I'm all over the compilation that's coming out. How the hell did I miss this thread before now? The first two albums (cassettes~!) I ever bought were Be Here Now and Odelay! I went through a period throughout college and part of my 20s dismissing Oasis as a band I was into because I was young and didn't know better. One day, for shits and giggles, I popped Standing on the Shoulders of Giants into the car while driving around and it all came flooding back. I don't know how to verbalize why I like things like our pool of proto-reviewers here, but I do know that I love this damn band.

YOU GOTTA ROLL WITH IT, YOU GOTTA TAKE YOUR TIME, YOU GOTTA SAY WHAT YOU SAY DONT LET ANYBODY GET IN YOUR WAY

Didn't even need to hear the song, the poignant lyrics are entrenched in my memory. Sign #24 of a great band.

Love the song Live Forever but I think I've gained a new appreciation for Noel guitar wise just after this.  Guitar only take from LF

This is when they're best (to me), when shit just keeps building more and more and now there's a mini orchestra playing urgently and that's all it takes for me really.

This is fun too.

Shit, their goddamn band logo is pure 90s with the lower case understated typeface.

This song always depresses me but I've loved it since high school.

I once knew a guy who was a massive Oasis fan only because Ryan Adams was and this dude was the biggest goddamn Ryan Adams fan I've ever known.

God damn... been working my way through random Oasis live songs and Liam's voice is stunning in 1993 performances.  Not a real big fan of the song but Liam's voice is maybe at his peak.

fuck that shit.  Blur is great and so is Oasis

may I posit though, that Pulp is possibly better than both?  A contentious argument that I'm not sure I believe in

I do find it funny that the biggest brit rock bands of the early 90's seem to hate each other and can't let it go.  I think the beef is mostly Liam though
