Instances of Successful "Random" Tag Team Pairings?
« on: October 06, 2010, 09:47:18 AM »
This came to mind recently when thinking about an old tag team thread I created where a lot of sentiment was expressed over tag team unity (matching clothes, double team finisher, etc.) as opposed to two random guys thrown together.  So are there instances of the latter occurring and being successful?

One could argue teams like the New Age Outlaws (Double J Jesse James suddenly teaming with Rockabilly) would be an example but they formed a fairly well known tag team and stayed together for years.  Are they applicable compared to a solid team that didn't have a name/entrance like D'Lo Brown & Mark Henry?

Other teams that may/may not apply
- The Hollywood Blondes (Austin and Pillman are thrown together and form one of the most memorable teams ever)
- Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett (Could've been an interesting pairing but would they have been "killed off" once Owen won the IC Title?)
- Booker T & Goldust had a pretty solid tag team going.
- Chris Jericho & Big Show were an example patterned after the above pairing that proved successful.
- Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko always seemed linked together as potential tag team partners despite often having singular feuds nowhere near each other (Benoit with the midcard to upper midcard scenario whereas Malenko was largely stuck in the cruiserweight division).

Any others?  Are there certain parameters that make/break a random tag team scenario in your eyes?

I liked Taz(z) and Spike Dudley.

Also, America's Most Wanted was thrown together in TNA, as was Beer Money. I remember when they first started out, very few people were behind them as a team, but they've grown to be a great team.

The Miz and John Morrison were thrown together pretty randomly. I think they were in the middle of a three way feud with Punk (With Miz slapping Morrison backstage) and then they are the Smackdown Tag champs a week later.

I thought Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle worked really well for the short time they were together in 2002.

How would you rank the Dream Team?  They were together for a number of years and held the tag titles for months, but both Valentine & Beefcake are far better known as singles guys and they never had matching tights or anything like that.

Booker T and Goldust was the first team I thought of when I read the thread title. They were awesome.

X-pac & Kane was a pretty random pairing that worked out as well.

Kane has tagged with X-Pac, Undertaker, RVD, Mankind, and the Hurricane. I think RVD and Kane were good together.

I always think about how WCW consolidated the teams of Jindrak & O'Haire and Palumbo & Stasiak to form probably the better team of Palumbo & O'Haire.

I thought I read in that special magazine that was thrown out by WWE around the same time the DVD came out that The Hart Foundation was pretty much a randome team at first before they became a mega success together.

I remember a tag match that Goldust and Booker T had at a Christmas RAW in 2002.  I just remember them and the UnAmericans having at it for a good twenty minutes.  It was pretty good.  Unfortunately, I can't find the footage online.

Sandman/2 Cold Scorpio in ECW was pretty fun.  So was Cactus Jack/Mikey Whipwreck for that matter.

The X-Pac and Kane pairing produced one of my most fondly remembered moments of the boom era when Kane decided to stick with X-Pac over his brother the Undertaker and when the little guy sees this he hugs Kane. I am legitimately about to burst into tears right now.

The Impact Players kinda just formed because they both did a beatdown on Shane Douglas and Tommy Dreamer out of nowhere and turned out to be a pretty damn good team.

One of my favorites from TNA's Nashville days, F'N Amazing (Lynn and Red; technically, they were the "X-Division Dream Team," though we all called them F'N Amazing), were just randomly thrown together. Ditto the best users of the Freebird rule since the original Freebirds themselves, XXX.

But yeah, this kinda ends with Rock N' Sock Connection. Two majorly over pieces of main event talent that happened to become an incredibly over tag team, albeit only lasting a few months, if that.

The Impact Players were great heels and worked really well together.

Another ECW thrown together team that was great fun was Tajiri and Whipwreck.

All of them have been named but here are my favorites:

Rock/Mankind
Booker T/Goldust
X-Pac/Kane
New Age Outlaws
Benoit/Malenko
Jericho/Big Show
Impact Players

Would the teaming of HBK and HHH be considered random?

I know Bret/Anvil and The Road Warriors were paired together which I'm sure seemed random at the time.

Kinda/sorta. In character, they were both forced to team due to Michaels and 'Taker having issues and HHH and Mankind having issues, IIRC, so the 'Taker/Mankind vs. Michaels/HHH was booked as a match. Then they began watching each other's back a lot more and officially formed Degeneration X a month later or so.

Jericho/Big Show.

Jericho had a very good team with Christian in 2003 as well.

Beer Money.

I remember writing on the old board how I hated the idea of this team because they both showed promise as singles. Roode had just come off the main event of Slammiversary and Storm had just ended a fued with Rhino (I think). I wanted to see them continue on as singles.

However, they rule together as a tag team.

I will eat all of your dicks if Daniel Bryan ACTUALLY cashes in his MITB at Wrestlemania
7 months and counting...

Beer Money when they put them together shouldn't have worked.  Storm was coming off of not getting pushed, and Roode was coming off of failing at getting pushed.  And when they formed there wasn't one person who liked them.  They were a poor man's AMW...and now they are the (IMO) best tag team in the world.  And better than AMW ever was.

I think I was one of only, maybe 3 people that liked them from the start. But I was not only a fan of Storm, but I was Roode's only fan. I was a big fan of Team Canada and liked everyone in the group, except A1.

YES

for some reason I've always wanted to see Mr. Kennedy Anderson and Matt Morgan just randomly paired up. Anderson doing his usual dick act cowering behind Morgan while Matt would be talking about WE seemed like greatness to me.

Although not successful, I always found the pairing of Billy Jack Haynes and Ken Patera to be amusing.  I suppose their connection was that they were both masters of the full nelson.  The formation of the team is what makes me laugh.  Haynes gets destroyed by Demolition, Patera runs in to make the save... and gets destroyed by Demolition.  When they regain consciousness, they hug, form the team, and proceed to get destroyed by Demolition together.
