I always feel like West Coast gets the upper hand when it comes to fast food. There's not much appetizing chain-wise that we get on the East Coast that you don't get.

For East Coast, Five Guys gets pimped as having great fries a lot, fresh and hand cut, but I've never actually tried them.  There's one about an hour away from me.

Anyone who doesn't think Five Guys makes the best fries is a 'mo. Totally worth the drive.

We just got a Five Guys where I live. Best frys in Southern California.

And fast food seems to be geared towards the stoner on the West Coast. I've probably ordered Jack in the Box's dollar menu five times over already.

Yeah, I think the burgers themselves are slightly overrated (still really fucking good though by any standard) but the fries are easily the best fast food fries I've had and better than 99% of the fries I've had at sitdown restaurants.

Oh yeah, I finally made it to a Five Guys late last year. Fries are great (not quite as hard for them as everyone else though), but I can never finish them all for some reason.

Where is there a Five Guys around here, MF?

Greektown?? No shit! I'm going to have to make the trip over there to see if it lives up to the hype.

Okay, I am going to say it. For all of the hype that Five Guys gets (not just from here), its overrated.

Don't get me wrong they're damn good burgers, but not as good as all the positive press they have been getting. And certainly not for the price they charge, that's for sure. And their fries are natural cut which are best eaten from the second you get them, not when you have to drive ten minutes to get home.

Again, they are good, not great.

If I ever get to go to Cali or Vegas again for my job, rest assured I'll give In N Out a try.

Don't feel bad, it was almost $18 for me and my girlfriend. That's way too much for what you're getting. $12 or $13 sure, but I do tend to forget everything is inflated price wise in downtown Ann Arbor.

Yeah but the burgers are at least mid-shelf bar/grill quality. It's not like you're paying seven dollars for a McDouble.

I'd also like to point out that Five Guys is the closest thing here to In N Out, and I'm very, very bitter about it. It's good but holy shit there are so many other places I can pay $10 for a burger and fries at in this town that are not only way better but that serve alcohol!

I don't think Five Guys is that bad, for what it's worth. The first thing every California transplant thinks of when they see one though is "WTF IN-N-OUT RIPOFF!" since the ambience/color scheme is very similar.

This is worthy of a new thread.

Thing you have to understand about the East Coast/Midwest Five Guys hype, VX, is that we don't really have many "premium", made to order burger joints...while you've got In N Out, Whataburger, Fatburger, etc.

East Coast does have Chick-Fil-A on you but I think that's expanded to California as well.

My point is...New England sucks fast food wise compared to the West Coast or South. Or even New York. We're just getting Chipotle and Five Guys now. All we had before then was the McDonalds/BK/Wendy's, Domino's and Yum! corporation junk.

What? The standard toppings are free. A plain burger costs the same as a burger with mushrooms, onions, lettuce, and tomato.

lol some Five Guys employed tricked the visibly stoned Mattdotcom into thinking all the shit cost extra, hence why he ended up paying so much.

I have both an In and Out and a Five Guys within a half hour drive of me.

Southern Utah wins the Great Burger War.

I like both, I'll lean towards Five Guys but that's just me being a food-hipster knowing about Five Guys before lots of people around here did.

This

My favorite is White Castle and north of the NYC area it doesn't exist.  It really is just Wendys/BK/McDonalds (in order favorite to least favorite), which isn't very exciting.

I don't want to spend more than 3 or 4 bucks on fast food, that's the whole point, so five guys would never be a regular thing for me, but I do want to try it at least once.  I'd be more apt to get a hot dog and fries there, doubt I could polish off a giant burger and fries in one sitting.

In N Out will likely be my first stop the next time I'm out west, just to see what all the hype is about

I've also never had Sonic.  They seem to be gradually making their way north though.  Nearest one to me now is over an hour away in Kingston, NY and it must have just opened up in the last year or so

The one time I went to a Chipolte I thought it sucked

Maine's getting a Sonic soon. And Massachusetts already has a couple. From what I've heard, they're not very good outside of the slushies but I'd be willing to give 'em a shot.

And a sign of how far behind we are when it comes to fast food is we didn't get Taco Bell really until about three years ago. Before that, there was one in a food court and one in a depressed mill town 45 minutes away and they were destinations for local stoners/fat people.

Luckily, Portland has enough great cheap, hole in the wall joints of all sorts (except no great or even really good Chinese places) that our lack of Chick Fil A, Popeye's and Baja Fresh doesn't bother me too much.

I'll address both of these with one shot. In-N-Out only exists in California, Southern Nevada, and Western Arizona for good reason: They are 100% so committed to freshness that they absolutely refuse to open a location that is over a day's drive from their Baldwin Park, CA processing plant (where they slaughter cows and all that). Broward might be interested to know that In-N-Out was weighing between expanding to the Pacific NW or out to Texas and decided on the latter (bastards!) and the only way they're able to do that is by opening up a new processing plant in West Texas which will cover Eastern Arizona through most of Texas, though probably not extending very far northward as a result of their "never farther than a day's drive" thing.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/26/in-n-out-to-texas-burger_n_591188.html

They're also still a wholly family-owned company, which is pretty awesome in the corporate world of fast food. And most of their locations are open until 1am, with a couple exceptions.

Do the Muslims complain that Mecca is too far for them to make a pilgrimage? Do they insist that God relocate his holy ground so that it's more convenient for them?!?? Well, do they!?!?

NO. YOU make the trip. Don't sit there on your frozen throne and expect the Savior of Burgers to come to your backwater village! How arrogant. How dare you.
