The topic of Childish Gambino was touched upon in the rap thread when his first single (Bonfire) off his new album was leaked. Well, the video has been released and he was on Jimmy Fallon last night.

We all know and love Donald Glover as Troy on Community, but it looks like this new album will determine how big he gets in the rap community. Looking to break out from the "underground" with his Urban Outfitters cardigan on, Childish Gambino looks to exploit the hipster community to put his style of intelligent, but yet non-threatening rap on the map (he also, unsuccessfully, tried to use this to become the new Spiderman).

Being from New York City (and unfortunately spending too much time in Brooklyn), there appears to be two types of opinions on gambino. One is that he is the next big thing, the second is that he is over-rated and has stolen the style of Odd Future, Drake and Lil Wayne. My personal opinion is somewhere in the middle.

Will Donald Glover/Childish Gambino have a music career after Community?
Will he be taken seriously by the rap community?
Is Childish Gambino the biggest gimmick in rap music with Glover playing his character of a stereotypical black best friend?

I haven't heard his raps yet, and will listen to them once I get home as my parents internet is crap, but the fact that he's Donald Glover makes me like him more than Drake and Lil Wayne already.

My early assessment of him after listening to like four songs is he's good enough where I don't just dismiss him as a novelty but I'm not sure yet I'd call him good.

No.  I sure as hell don't take him seriously.

Drake isn't hip hop, he's just a guy who became famous for making hits for teenage girls. Don't blame him for the marketing hype behind him. I don't like his music but I'm not going to hate on him for his success because he doesn't fit into a genre that suits tell me he should be fit into.

Ok, so I'm a 30 year old fat, bald white guy, so there isn't a lot of stock in what I say about rap, but I downloaded all his stuff, and I'm loving it, a lot.

Well I wasn't fat. Wasn't bullied either, so not a 'nerd' in that sense. But definitely a geek. Grew up as the only black guy in a predominantly white neighborhood/school.  And therefore was never really into what your stereotypical black guy is supposedly into.

I can relate to being the token black guy in a white neighborhood/school. Everyone has these stupid ass expectation of what I was supposed to be like. Pretty annoying.

I spent work today listening to the album.  I really like it.  I'm not a rap enthusiast or anything...but the guy writes some great lyrics.  Which I suppose makes sense since he's an award winning comedy writer.

I have to listen to the album again. I listened to it yesterday going to work, but I fall asleep on the train, so I ended p missing half the album. What I heard I really liked, though. And I agree with him writing some great lyrics.

This might belong in the TV section, but I figured I'd put it here, and if need be it can be split, but did anyone catch his comedy special Saturday night? Dude is flat out hilarious. I didn't mind the beeping by Comedy Central, but their commercial breaks really broke the continuity up. I wish this was on HBO. He was damn good. He had a great bit about how he'd rather get AIDS than have kids.

If his rap on last week's Community is any indication of how he is as a rapper then he's not good at all.

There is something wrong with you. That shit was awesome. Plus it's written for a sitcom on at 8pm, so there's not much he can get away with that he can do on his albums.

Just reading a few excerpts I can tell in less then 3 seconds that's not Donald Glover...that dialogue is nothing like his. Unless he was purposely not trying to sound like himself, but still, as much shit as he does, including running his own IAMDONALD tumblr/site, I don't think he would have time for another one.

"Diggy - Son...what part of the game is this? This nigga still rock Pull-Ups at night b...how he gon start beef? Im sayin son was still eatin Gerber joints not too long ago....HOW he got beef? Son is the black Malcom In The Middle...HOW this nigga beefin wit Jermaine tho son? "

Way to "Black." Donald doesn't talk like that. Not to mention he would call himself the black Malcolm in the Middle before anyone else...

Ok, reading more of it, it does seem like a parody. Still don't believe it's him. He may do impressions, but the whole blog seems like it would be way too much time and effort for a guy from what I've seen of his schedule, especially in recent months with his tour and shit is relatively busy.

And regardless, with most of his music his target audience is mostly 'black nerds' and white people...and he's stated on several occasions a lot of what he's into is weird music and alternative shit, would be out of character for him to do an entirely rap blog. Especially one that scrolling through seems eerily focused on Drake and J Cole...

Could be. But I highly doubt it.

Downloaded "Royalty" and gave it a listen.  It's not near as god as "Camp".  He seems to have released a bunch of "generic" rap for the most part.

I unno it's very different but I really like the production on Royalty. Camp is really poppy and catchy whereas Royalty is influenced by all sorts of electronica like UK Bass and the Flying Lotus style tripped out beats - some of the songs get samey towards the end but early on theres some really cool stuff.  He clearly has less to say in this one though the rapping is less interesting.

I agree with this post. It's very different from Camp. I really like Camp a lot, but this one is pretty solid as well. I have not disliked any of his albums yet, although some have been better than others obviously. I'd put this at the top half of his better stuff.

Which of course means, it's out now. For those wondering.

It's not bad. I will have to do a few more listens though to really get a final judgment because everything seems hit or miss. He shouts out Chance the Rapper on one of the songs, and I seeked out his album Acid Rap...and I've found myself listening to/liking that better than BTI over the last few days.
