The Fast and the Furious Franchise Thread
« on: June 18, 2013, 06:38:44 AM »
Discuss all the films itt.

Just got back from seeing Fast and the Furious 6.  Enjoyed it as it was more reminiscent of the 1st with a smidge more of a plot, somewhat forgettable villain, and all about fast cars and action scenes.

Spoiler: show
Given the guy from Tokyo Drift was in it and the ending prologue scene, I kind of wanted the kid who played Sean (Lucas Black) in that film to be back.  Would have fit with both Han and his racing Dom at the end too.

"Tokyo Drift" is the only entry in the series that I don't like. The rest are great, especially the 5th one.

All I know is Drift is actually part 6. The last two films have been one long ass prequel.

wouldn't it be the last 3 since Han was in the fourth one as well.

I've never seen the second one. Is it even worth checking out?
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

Yeah, last three. My bad.
And I don't even remember much about the second one other than Devon Aoki is running around. Whatever happened to her character?

I've never seen any of this series, that was until this weekend. I wanted to watch series and catch up before 7 came out. I was super stoked since I like Wan and the cast was amazing. I bought the first 5 in a box set on Blu for like $30 through Amazon.  I got it 2 days before Walker died and planned to watch it this weekend anyway, so I stuck with that. Started it on Friday and I'm watching the 5th movie now. I'm really loving this series. I thought the first was pretty solid. The second one, after a bit of a rough bit at the beginning, was good. It felt like they wanted Vin to be in it, but couldn't get him. The chemistry between Walker and Tyrese wasn't great to start, but got better.

I actually liked the third one. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I thought it was a fun sequel. I really liked Han and that was a big shock what happened to him. Fast and Furious was ok. I thought it was a little slow in parts. I guess it was a good reintroduction to Walk and Vin's characters and story. So far, I'm about 20 minutes into 5 and I'm loving it already. Rock is awesome.

I'm one of the few people who likes the second. The third was alright. I didn't like the fourth one. One and six are both lots of fun. For my money, Five is easily the best one though.

I agree that Tokyo Drift is underrated, and the fourth film is the weakest of the series.

I still like the first one the most, though. Love the camaraderie between the characters, and how racing is part of the story.

I'd rank them 5, 1, 6, 3, 4, 2.

Tyrese killed the second film for me.

I saw Five having not seen any of the other movies and came out thinking I had been missing out on the greatest action series of all time. Turns out it was just a completely different movie from the others. I enjoyed 1 but not much of 2-4. 6 was a bit of a let down after the greatness of 5, but the credit scene with Statham was awesome and really had me looking forward to 7. Not sure how that's going to work out now though.

As a guy who loves action movies in general but is typically bored by car chases (because 99% of them suck, they're the exact same shit every time, there's no variation), should I even bother with this series?  Especially since I'm not exactly the world's biggest Paul Walker fan, regardless of current events I've never liked that guy as a performer.

He was booked towards his strengths and carried through his weaknesses in Joyride, like the rest of the underachieving cast in that had-no-right-to-be-this-good movie.

Fast 5 is legitimately awesome.  It's a super-cheesy but also super-entertaining action movie that feels like a very polished 80s throwback, right down to the afterthought Central/South American villain and assorted Power Handshakes with bulging biceps.  The rest of the series is dumb and basically good for lazy Saturday afternoons on TNT.

Ah.  "The kind of movie where you don't care if it's interrupted by commercials."  Gotcha.  Die Hard 2 territory, is what that makes me think of.

You need to turn off your brain though. Some of the stuff they survive and without a scratch is so unrealistic, it's downright laughable. If you think about it for 30 seconds, the movie is ruined and you just can't stand them anymore.

DO. NOT. THINK.

Especially with the last one which is holy shit levels of "are you fucking kidding me" survival.

Just watched Furious 7 and it was overblown, epic, awesomeness! Chases, Gunfights, Hand to Hand Combat!

Spoilering just in case...

Spoiler: show

- Nice to know they finally did away with the pretense that anybody was dying in this thing. At this point, nobody even bothered to tell the makeup people that cars were crashing and people were getting injured I'm 95% certain of. Car goes over and down a sheer cliff? Just wince in pain, Vin. That also partly made the end anti-climactic trying to believe that could kill Dominic but whatever. Didn't really care about the whole Ramsey sub-plot but it worked to give lots of car chases and things going boom.
- Jason Statham was awesome. Love the opening scene with the bodies piled up around him.
- Lots of callbacks including RACE WARS, which I loved as I always wanted that to return in another of the series and we finally got it. Pretty obvious that this was the final film in the franchise just from the vibe throughout. Liked the touching end honoring Paul Walker.

She's been campaigning for a role in the series for a while now. I love it. I love the fact that an actor of that caliber wants to have fun with a series like this.

Has this series always had sci-fi elements or is this new territory?

There were increasing elements but nothing outside of what a James Bond movie would have. This is way further than any of the others, but I'm also going to see this ASAP. I love these stupid fucking movies.

I was getting tired of these movies, but without Vin Diesel being boring this looks so much fun. I love Statham and The Rock.

Reportedly The Rock is also officially out of the Fast and Furious 9 movie so I'm curious if they try to replace him or simply keep the roster down a bit instead.

They do. A friend and I binged the whole series before moved down south. They're surprisingly good, actually, but reach action flick perfection with part 5...when the Rock enters the series. He and Statham have a few great scenes together in 7 and I think one in 8, so this being all them is going to be amazing.

I think this with each new one that is released but it's amazing this series started about a crew smuggling shitty TV/VCR combo sets while using street racing as a cover to whatever the fuck is going on now.

Adding an actual plot is what made the series money past the first one. Hell, even the first is just Point Break with street racers instead of surfers.

Fast Five is a masterpiece and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.  I'm probably going to see this one based on the chemistry between Johnson and Statham I saw in the trailer alone.

^Same. I thought the first was alright and hated the second, but seeing Fast Five made me want to watch the whole series.

Ranking the series (if anybody's interested)...
1. Fast Five
2. Furious 7
3. The Fast and the Furious (1)
4. Fast & Furious 6
5. F8 of the Furious (best title in the entire series)
6. Fast & Furious (4)
7. 2 Fast 2 Furious
8. Tokyo Drift
