WWE Extreme Rules - June 7 2009

WWE Champion Randy Orton vs. Batista (Steel Cage Match)

Orton retains. Batista isn't WWE championship material at this point. Can this feud please end and Orton moves onto someone else.

World Heavyweight Champion Edge vs. Jeff Hardy (Ladder Match)

Edge wins. I just don't see them taking the title off him yet. Give Edge a damn long run with the title. Should be the match of the night, and Hardy will get his big ladder spot in.

John Cena vs. Big Show (Submission Match)

Cena wins via STF. Big Show will tap out.

ECW Champion Christian vs. Jack Swagger vs. Tommy Dreamer (Triple Threat Hardcore Rules Match)

For a brief second, I can see Dreamer winning, but then logic clicks in. Christian retains.

Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho (No Holds Barred Match)

If this feud is going to continue for a while, then Jericho must win. Jericho is the new IC Champion.

United States Champion Kofi Kingston vs. MVP vs. William Regal vs. Matt Hardy (Fatal Four Way Match)

Again, I ask, what is so extreme about this match. Regardless, Kingston retains. No point in him winning the title to drop it so soon.

CM Punk vs. Umaga (Samoan Strap Match)

Punk wins on TV, loses here.

Miss WrestleMania Vickie Guerrero vs. Santina Marella (Hog Pen Match)

Meh, whetever. I really don't care about this one.

Thanks to the Queen's Birthday I get a day off school and I shall immerse myself into the world of PPVS. I shall find a stream and watch this. I'm looking forward to the ECW title match just to see how they run with Dreamer. We may see him win here, but I reckon Christian probably retains. Cena wins for sure after being monstered by Big Show for weeks.

I was really considering getting this show for Edge-Jeff, Rey-Jericho and Punk-Umaga, but ever since they added the Vickie-Santino shit I find myself not wanting to give the WWE a dime this month. I know (hope) it'll be short, but I can't stand Vickie or the Santina angle and I think its absolutely ridiculous that they would have this match on a Pay Per View. Since my house is the PPV house, I guess I'll end up ordering the show if enough of my friends want to see it..but if not, forget it.

The fatal four way match should be a Singapore Cane match for no reason at all but it'd be a neat visual and fit the theme of the PPV.

Seriously, this is like having a Survivor Series with matches other than multi-man elimination matches!

It may just be a regular match, but the Hog Pen match is the one that strikes me as not being "extreme".  It's just a bad joke.

Actually, compared to last year, this lineup is disappointing. TWO no holds barred matches? Hogpen match? A regular match? I guess this is what happens when they put gimmick matches on the rest of the PPVs.

Speaking of the Hog Pen match, here's some completely useless info. Having just watched the 1997 Slammy Awards, I decided to check out the past winners, and I had completely forgot that the HHH-Godwinn Hog Pen Match was actually nominated for the MOTY Slammy at the 1996 show. I know 1995 wasn't exactly the greatest year for match quality, but really?

A hog pen is set up near the entranceway though the match starts with the wrestlers in the ring. You win by throwing your opponent into the hog pen. 'Hilarity' ensues with the loser slipping and sliding in the mud.

It won over the Michaels/Ramon Summerslam '95 Ladder match?

The more I think about it, I would indeed markout if Dreamer won the ECW title.

And in typical fashion, I can see it being just like in 2000, when he loses it in 30 seconds to Swagger.

Oh c'mon, HHH falling in the mud was good stuff.  Granted, the 15 minute match before it sucked but the payoff ruled while preserving HHH's undefeated streak for at least another month.

Who ended the streak? Since we're at it, Goldust had a streak too around the same time. Who ended that streak as well?

Was it really much of a streak?  Because he lost to Fatu before the Hog Pen match.

Raw's top matches do absolutely nothing for me to the point of being a deterrent. However, the SmackDown should be good to great, and Swagger and Christian have been delivering the goods and this could be a cool moment for Dreamer. Overall, I think I'm up for the PPV tonight.

Actually, given the constraints of the stupid gimmick, the original Hog Pen match between Triple H and Henry Godwin isn't that bad. This show does nothing for me however, I may watch a stream if I could find it, but I don't care really.

I dont know about that, I recalled it being pretty damn bad on an otherwise pretty damn good pay per view, which I think was headlined by Bulldog v. Bret if I recall.

I'm kind of torn on this show.......not sure if I will get it or maybe finally go ahead and go down to a local bar here in town and check it out instead for free. I'm starting to think more of the latter. Even though this is alot of the same lineup as last month's great ppv, some of the gimmicks attached to these matches seem to make me scratch my head, such as Show/Cena in a submission match. What is so "extreme" about that? Same with the hog pen gimmick. The Batista/Orton match has dull written all over it, and adding a cage match gimmick doesn't help it. I don't get what makes the three way ECW title match and the four way US title match "extreme rules" when it sounds like just a normal multi-man match for both of them, or is it just that both have no DQ? So what makes that different than Rey/Jericho then. With that said though, I expect Rey/Jericho NHB, Punk/Umaga strap match, and the Edge/Hardy ladder match to be pretty good.

I'm watching on a stream only for the ECW match.  Either Dreamer finally gets a televised ECW title win, or he leaves WWE and what's left of the original ECW finally dies. Either way I need to see it live.

For what it's worth, the company just decided the finish of the show very late last night.

Lots of forward planning on this one, then.

How would that work? After giving Swagger such a hard time, Tiffany turns heel and basically gift warps the belt to Swagger for the SWERVE of 09?

Swagger could easily complain that he never lost (Christian gets pinned) and demands a title show right there. Dreamer, high on emotion, grants him his wish.

When I was on a back Pennsylvania highway, I saw a small bar proudly trumpeting on a large outdoor sign, "JUDGMENT DAY - MAY 17". Of course, this was May 24th, but I was happy to see a bar somewhere still caring about pro wrestling.

It wasn't the pay-per-view. They were working an end of the world angle in order to drive up business. People drink more if they think the world is ending. It's basic Reaganomics (this is what my spellcheck says Thugganomics is).

I'm hoping the title change plays into Batista's apparent injury; Orton demands his rematch tomorrow night, gets it, and in winning the belt back lays Batista out so he can take time off. Otherwise, the title change makes no sense. Batista didn't need to win the belt to get his revenge and Orton shouldn't be doing a short-term title change deal.
