Gotham TV Series

"The television series revolving around Batman's ally, Commissioner Gordon, long before he ever earned the rank. Explore the world of Gotham City through the eyes of one of the department's best detectives."

Why does it have to be focused on a YOUNG non-commissioner Gordon?  Why do we always have to do this reboot secret-origins shit over and over again, when we've SEEN that already?  Especially since we've got the Gotham Central comic sitting right there as the obvious model for this show.

Because if it's before Batman then they don't have to include Batman, which would increase the pressure on the show to not fail.

They can still use R Kelly's Gotham City as the theme song.  No references to a bat.  Just a hero like young Jim Gordon gumshoe.

I didn't care for Smallville at all, but that's more because I've never really liked Superman. This, though, is fucking Batman, and the bar is so ridiculously high for Batman properties now that, if smart, they won't try to pull the CW tween drama stuff with this.

You know what? I think they should base this on Earth One. BAMF Alfred Pennyworth being the one to train Bruce and Bruce struggling to be what he eventually becomes would make for good TV.

Maybe the real deep state was the friends we made along the way.

Harvey Bullock is in the show as the apparent choice actor (per Latino Review) is Donal Logue.

Paparazzi got pictures of Gordon:

and The Penguin

So Fox jumped out and put out their own image of Bullock

I think this concept would work much better as a comic series than a TV show, but it at least has my interest.

I can do without kid sized bat villains.  If it was young Bruce in the background and the formative years of characters aged like they're doing Riddler and Penguin...with the focus on Gordon dealing with city with a growing bad guy population and no batman yet...that'd be cool.  But pint sized Catwoman is eyerolling.  When they get to tiny Poison Ivy it's laugh out loud material.

That's exactly how I felt. Catwoman looked exactly like catwoman, costume and everything, only younger. Showing Poison Ivy in front of that plant was eye rolling.

As long as the ratings are good and people tune in, it'll stay around. It's not a FOX production, it's Warner, so even if it's lower rated it'll have a better shot.

So, this is a series about failure right?
I mean everything we have been told, Gordon ends up a beaten man unable to control the crime of Gotham until Batman comes and saves the day to turn the city around.

So I'm seeing commercials of them saying up to them to stop them when everything I know is, he didn't stop shit.

Maybe it's about a man staying honest amid the ultimate corrupt broken city, and continuing to fight even though yeah...he's not going to win.  Then using that example as maybe a kind of inspiration for the young Bruce on his path to become what he does...which is when it can start turning.

That's how I'd book it.

I just cringe every time I see Poison Ivy by a plant or Catgirl holding a cat.  Things don't have to be so on the nose always.

So this is starting Monday at 8 PM... curious how the pilot is.  Will probably give it at least 3 episodes unless the Pilot is utterly beyond atrocious.

Early critic reviews list it among the most promising shows of the season after initial screenings.  One of the supporting cast was getting recognized as a break out performer too.  I want to say the guy playing Cobblepott.

Feeling a little bit better than I was initially, I think they have information for the first three episodes available.

From what I read the foundation of the show is strong...and it's a good show...but the pilot was overload with batman winks at the camera and it took away from what they had that was working.  I assume that's an easy fix.

I have a feeling their plan for Joker on this show will be interesting but probably either piss off or confuse some of the general/casual audience.

Spoiler: show
They have plans to have a character every show that "may" be Joker.  There was footage of a standup comedian from the pilot but supposedly every episode is going to have a random possible Joker.

Yeah, despite some of the cheesy early stuff, I am fairly hyped for this (though I may not to sit down to watch it until later in the week).  It seems like the bits and pieces I am reading have it being constructed fairly well and the actors in the show I know, I tend to like.

That's sort of the Mentalist "who is Red John" approach.  It could work.  But in any case
it's not like the movies are going to use this version of the Joker anyway.

BTW as a father of two young girls it's weird seeing Twist from the Fresh Beat Band on a dark show like Gotham.

This is probably the only new show I'm looking forward to this season (Girl Meets World wasn't doing it for me). I'll definitely check out the first few episodes before I judge. Fox doesn't exactly have the best track record when it comes to new programming.

The key thing you probably need to look at is how much support Kevin Reilly gave a show.  The higher the support, the more likely the new co-chairs will look for an excuse to kill the show.

This was pretty good. I feel like it would have been better if they just came up with their own characters, but Donal Logue and Jada Pinkett and Robin Taylor are making it work as-is.

Introduced too many Rogue's Gallery characters for the pilot. Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Ivy, and possibly Joker and those were just the ones I caught. Makes more sense to take a bit of time with some of those. Otherwise I liked the pilot fairly well.

Yeah, but two of those.. Ivy and Selena shouldn't be major players as much as Penguin and Riddler will turn out to be, which is fine IMO.

Pilot Thoughts

#1:  Love the set design, absolutely gorgeous look to the city.
#2A:  I'm fine with the introduction of the Rogues Gallery.  I'd rather they introduce them en masse and slowly build them up as they go along when the plots deem it necessary rather than randomly introducing them in an episode and suddenly they've become a central player.
#2B:  With that said, I can kind of buy the Rogues Gallery having interactions early on in the careers of a Gordon or Bullock.  In other formats we've seen them when they were 20 years older and Gordon generally seemed to have awareness of them already either as a villain or a person in general.
Spoiler: show
#3:  Not sure how I feel about seeing Ivy's home life so early and her having an immediate hatred of the Gotham police force after her father, Mario Pepper gets murdered by Bullock.  Felt heavy handed in a way. A very minor nitpick but going with Ivy instead of Pamela Isley? Can kind of see the Catwoman/Bruce thing but again, it seems off that it's being pushed as this 'connection' at a younger age.

#4:  The casting (especially Gordon & Bullock and their chemistry) is already growing on me and I can see them becoming their characters with each progressive episode.

Finally got to watch the pilot this morning. Some thoughts-
- Am I the only one who thought the actor cast as Gordon kinda looked like a young Russel Crow? I've never seen anything else that he's doen, but the whole episode I kept trying to figure out where I've seen him before. Finally it just clikced that he kinda gave off a Russel Crow vibe.

- Why was Bullock so worried that he had killed an innocent man if Pepper had indeed been framed? Pepper was a parolee with a gun (against the law), who tried to shoot a cop (against the law), and then tried to gut a cop (against the law) after fleeing a lawful interrogation. That's a justified shoot if I've ever saw one.

- Not sure how I feel about Montoya being a detective in the MCU already. One of the best aspects about her character in the comics (and the cartoon) was that she started as a rookie beat cop, who earned her way to a detective's badge. I guess they didn't want two rookies on the show, but maybe they should have held off on her character for a few seasons (OF course, this is Fox, so there might not be a few seasons).

- That being said, I'm intrigued by the fact that Montoya and Barbara had a fling. Wonder how that dynamic will play out.

Overall a so-so episode, but it shows promise.  I'll stick it out for the season and see how it goes.

Unless Fox cancel's it.
