Couldn't even make 20 pounds over his target weight?

On a related note, I am going to try and cut 13 pounds between now and March to get to 147 for my Muay Thai fight and I've never had to really cut before so I don't really know what to expect.  I've naturally lost 20 pounds since June just by improving my diet and ramping up my training regimen but I'm pretty sure I've hit a wall in "natural loss".  Any ex-wrestlers out there or other guys who've had to make weight?  Don't you do BJJ, HSJ?

Looked up the book and the first two fighter quotes for it were from two fairly notorious dopers (Belfort and Sonnen) lol.

There's a lot of info to dig through here, but it's a good collection of weight-cutting articles, mostly related to wrestling:

http://www.ussportshypnotist.com/cutting_weight.htm

If you have a little more time, the Grappler's Guide to Nutrition is apparently great. Lots of grapplers/wrestlers I knew back in the day used this one, and John Berardi is a credible name in nutrition and exercise:

I do a IIFYM method for dieting and using myfitnessapp to keep track. I have a guy with a masters in sports nutrition who gives me advice which is mostly good, but he's a paleo guy which I know some people aren't against. I don't cut too much weight but a brown belt I use to train with always does water loading to cut weight (and he always makes it). There was an article online about water loading that was really helpful, I'll try to find it when I get some free time.

Here is the article on water loading I was talking about. Very useful and informative.

Also, I just now realize that your fight is in March and you only need to lose 13 pounds. Don't even stress it dude, that is way more time than you really need. Is it same day weigh in or night before?

Per Meltzer - Benson might be on his way out.

Quote
Benson Henderson is going to let his contract expire and test free agency. I believe his 11/28 fight in Seoul, South Korea, will be the last or is nearing the end of his contract. Thiago Alves pulled out of that main event with a broken rib and Henderson will now be facing Jorge Masvidal to headline. Because Henderson is partially Korean (his mother is Korean), he was the key to the main event. Bellator would obviously be interested in adding Henderson to their lightweight division.

Yet when Brock was doing that camp to figure out if he wanted it, Dana was probably sitting beside his phone the whole time. Dana's scared he'll come back and win the title.

Sorry, just saw this.  Day before.  I guess I was thinking more along the lines of cutting, say, ten or so pounds leading up to the weigh in.

I'd say there's a 0.001% chance GSP wins that fight. Not sure why Dana wouldn't want to pop a huge boner I mean buyrate with the money that would come with GSP's return to the sport.

Wow people are already counting out the GOAT?

It doesn't make sense for him to publicly discourage a comeback like that unless he doesn't want anything to do with him. He's p. much been saying as much since the Hendricks fight.

Also, Condit might be the champ by the time GSP makes his decision.

Lawler is at the top of his game and GSP hasn't fought in a long time and was declining when he left. I have Lawler over GSP as well.

I may even have Condit over GSP now.

Depends on how shot GSP's knees are. Condit gets taken down by a stiff breeze, could still see GSP outworking him for enough rounds to win a decision.

GSP and his coaches gameplan fights better than anyone else. I didn't give Lawler that second Hendricks fight (although I gave him the first). Robby isn't at all unbeatable.

I thought Lawler lost both Hendricks fights and was losing the MacDonald fight until the TKO.  Even considering the layoff, I'd have to side with GSP.

I gave Hendricks the first fight and Lawler the second one. Too much wall and stall bullshit from Johny in the rematch and Lawler landed almost all the significant offense.

Damn, did nobody watch this? Cejudo proved he's got good striking, but I'm not so sure he has the advantage in MMA wrestling over DJ that he thinks he does. Still, when he said he hasn't showed all his stuff and would bring out his entire toolbox for DJ, I got p. hyped.

Diego has GOAT toughness, GOAT MMA Scrambling, but wtf doesn’t he use it more one of the best switches of all time WHYYYYYY

WTF Neil Magny’s grappling is fuckin’ sick, especially his transitions in improving position. That makes the Maia dominance that much more impressive. He’s really good at gaining leverage in the clinch too.

I liked how he tied up Kelvin and prevented him from GnP while on his back when he wasn’t hurt. The way he recovered from the knockdown showed a lot of good technique and heart too, because he was rocked. Not such a good idea to come forward and get rocked again though.

He also knows how to use his reach perfectly, as he kept Kelvin on the end of his punches for most of the fight and that’s why he won. THAT STRIKE RATE DIFFERENTIAL SECOND ONLY TO THE GOAT

This guy is a legit great fighter. Some have been trolling that line for a while, but you can’t deny his wins in such a short amount of time and what that means for his toughness, and the fight IQ he used to gain those wins. He also improved significantly throughout his fights, gotta give credit where credit is due.

The first three fights. Nearly put me to sleep and really killed the rest of the card for me. I don't think they need to televise finalists from a TUF season that people aren't watching.

Diego was tough as hell. He looked really good in spots. But it was still an easy 30-27 fight to score. Those switches on the mat were very nice.

I gave Kelvin a 10-8 round 4 making the fight a draw. The loser of that fight was going to be in a bad spot. Good enough to stay. But not cracking the top ten.

Neil Magny isn't a great fighter at the moment but with his growth rate and improvement he can be one. Love that he's staying active as much as he is and I respect the fuck out of him for saying he'll still fight Wonderboy in January.

So are we gonna talk about the interview Jon Jones did with Helwani? Really good stuff but man did he throw Dana and the NSAC under the bus. To flat-out state that the UFC knew that Vitor was on steroids prior to their fight is fucking ballsy and really unheard of from fighters. Some guys speculate but he's straight-up stating it as a fact. How can the UFC not respond to this? They kinda have to, right?

Bad Decisions: 2015

Expanding on my earlier work on this subject, I have been keeping track of all decisions in the UFC and have been assigning my own scores to each one.  Taking it a step further, I also assigned a "confidence" grade of 1-5 to the winner of each round; 1 being a very close round in favor of the winner ("lowest" confidence, in my opinion) and 5 being a dominant round in favor of the winner ("highest" confidence, in my opinion, but not necessarily a 10-8).

In order to qualify as a "bad" decision, a fight has to have had the actual loser of the fight win more than one (or three rounds in a title fight) on my score card with an additional grade of 2 or higher.  This removes decisions where I didn't necessarily agree with the actual winner, but could see where certain rounds could have been scored differently.

The results so far this year ("confidence" scores in parentheses):

Cerrone vs. Henderson (UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs Siver)
1st Round: 10-9, Henderson (2 out of 5)
2nd Round: 10-9 Henderson (2 out of 5)
3rd Round: 10-9 Henderson (1 out of 5)

Masvidal vs. Iaquinta (UFC Fight Night: Mendes vs Lamas)
1st Round: 10-9, Masvidal (4 out of 5)
2nd Round: 10-9, Masvidal (1 out of 5)
3rd Round: 10-9, Masvidal (2 out of 5)

Nover vs. Nam (UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs Faber)
1st Round: 10-9, Nover (4 out of 5)
2nd Round: 10-9, Nover (3 out of 5)
3rd Round: 10-9, Nover (3 out of 5)

Rodriguez vs. Rosa (UFC 188: Velasquez vs. Werdum)
1st Round: 10-9, Rosa (2 out of 5)
2nd Round: 10-9, Rodriguez (5 out of 5)
3rd Round: 10-9, Rosa (3 out of 5)

Nijem vs. Holbrook (UFC on FOX: Dillashaw vs. Barao II
1st Round: 10-9, Nijem (2 out of 5)
2nd Round: 10-9, Nijem (3 out of 5)
3rd Round: 10-9, Nijem (3 out of 5)

Interestingly enough, a fight I scored on re-watch (Johnson/Dariush) wasn't quite as bad as I initially thought.  I still had Johnson as the victor but the confidence score for his first round was 1 out of 5, as I thought it was a very close round.  If someone were to have scored the third in favor of Dariush, it would have put him over on the basis of winning the very close first round.

Another interesting fight to note is Ticman/Zhikui.  Ticman was on his bike the whole fight but I still had him winning every round and at worst thought that it deserved a draw as I thought Ticman deserved a 10-8 for the last round.  Another thing to consider is that Zhikui connected on only 8% of his strikes, which has to rank as the lowest percentage by a winning fighter (with a minimum number of strikes) in history.  I know aggression plays a factor, but still.

lol I already saw the Jones video, it was great and yeah I was really happy to see him rip Dana. I think I posted before that Malki tweeted out that Jones was super pissed about the Belfort thing, glad he opened up.

Great initiative, BR4L. Would be cool to pile them up and look back on them. If a score seemed wrong to me, I look at the aggregation of all the scores by people in the MMA media. There are usually about 15 or so of them, and the closer they are to a consensus at odds with the judges' decision, the more of a robbery I feel it was. Fightmetric is another good measuring stick.

After the way he got pieced up by Breese I don't blame him. He seems like a really nice guy in interviews but I can't fucking stand it when fighters openly acknowledge that they have a boring/ineffective style, talk about changing things up and don't do anything about it. Either evolve or just keep your thoughts to yourself.

People on Sherdog are saying he should have his last win taken away. Why? He was caught in an out-of-competition testing (which I think is a joke anyway).

If he's getting paid so badly, why didn't he take the teaching job that he was basically given that pays more? Lots of people want to get paid well for doing what they love. It doesn't work that way for most people. The UFC is going to pay what they pay because there's always someone willing to fight for 10k/10k. Sterling sure as hell was.

The teaching job will always be there. But once Sterling fights out his contract, it's not unrealistic he could make 200k a year fighting, whether that's in the UFC or not.

For most of these talented guys now, I'm sure they're just trying to fight through their contract.
