ShoMMA: Villasenor vs. Santos
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:50:30 AM »
This is Friday night at 11:00 PM on Showtime.

- Joey Villasenor (26-6) vs. Evangelista Santos (16-12) [Fight at 185 pounds]
- Nick "The Goat" Thompson (38-10-1) vs. Tim Kennedy (9-2)
- Jorge Gurgel (12-5) vs. Conor "Hurricane" Heun (8-2)
- Sarah Kaufman (8-0) vs. Shayna Baszler (9-5)
- Cory "The One" Devela (9-2) vs. Luke Rockhold (4-1)

Preliminary Bouts:
- Lyle Beerbohm (9-0) vs. Duane Ludwig (18-8)
- Dennis Hallman (40-12-2) vs. Cedric Marks (26-18)
- Brian Caraway (10-3) vs. Alex Zuniga (2-1)
- Landon Showalter (7-12-1) vs. Travis Doerge (4-8)
- Len Bentley (3-2) vs. Marques Daniels (1-2)
- Steve Hadsel (1-0) vs. Taylor Roberts (1-1)

Easily the best ShoMMA or "minor league" EliteXC/Showtime show every put on. Smokin' Joey V has been out of action for a LONG time and Cyborg is a good gatekeeper kind of test.

I'm excited to see how Tim Kennedy can do against competition now that he has gotten  leave from the Army and is fighting MMA full time. Pretty good card for a free show.

I hope Joey wins.  Every time I see an interview with the guy he just seems like such a nice person.  Plus he trains with Jackson.

And I hope for Gurgel's sake he's finally understood that if you have a black belt in BJJ and shitty stand up you shouldn't stand up.
Matt, don't be a fag. Post some huge cocks.

He would be wise to stand up in this case since Heun's striking leaves a lot to be desired, while his grappling is pretty solid.

I can't believe a guy can be that big, and jump around like he does what a great athlete!

Gurgel stood up and kinda beat the shit out of Heun.  Gurgel fought like a retard in that Heun was hurt a fair few times and Gurgel just stood there only to hurt him more a minute or two later.  He never tried to finish him.

All things considered the officiating was retarded too.  No fighter could stand in the clinch for ten seconds before being told to move it, if the fighter wasn't standing and throwing bombs it seemed like the referees weren't having any part of it and fighters had to be told to get up or separate and chuck.

He puts on entertaining fights, though.

Overall, I found the card very entertaining with a lot of solid fights.

But, did Quadros have a stroke or something? He just seemed "off" all night.

Amen. Di Robero had a horrible night. He lets Devala take about 15 more shots than he needed to and was way to quick to admonish when fighters were engaged on the groud. I loved Rockholds' post fight interview, "I got tired of punching him and I guess the ref wasn't going to stop it so I went for the RNC".

Fun night overall

I'm starting to think that this Gurgel  has a BJJ black belt story is just a myth
