Somebody Call 911! Connor is Watching ECPW On Fire (9-20-14)

ECPW On Fire

September 20th, 2014 (taped August 22nd, 2014)

From The Paramus Elks Lodge in Paramus, New Jersey

Announcers: Joey G and Ken Reedy

Kai Katana Vs “Surfer” Mike Capp

We haven’t seen Kai Katana in a month or two. Generally, I think he’s one of the more impressive workers in the promotion but his style in this match is a lot slower and less flashy. I wonder if he’s dealing with an injury or just doesn’t want to get hurt working a semi-crappy ring. Mike Capp is wearing bright red tights and with his bleached hair looks like Billy & Chuck era Billy Gunn. This is a very inauspicious return for Katana as he loses by disqualification after he whacks Capp with his rainstick thingy he carries to the ring. Then after the match, comedy wrestler Capp fights him off and sends him scurrying to the back as the announcers tease a feud between the two. Definitely not Kai’s best showing. C-

Mikey 3D Vs Agent X

This match is joined in progress. Agent X is a generic masked dude. His mask sort of looks like Great Sasuke’s. While we’re talking about lookalikes, Mikey 3D’s hair is back to its natural brunette color and he kind of looks like a somewhat more jakked Colt Cabana wearing John Cena’s camo jorts. We only see about the last ninety seconds or so of this match. Mikey 3D gets the win with a bearhug. Have to give it an Incomplete. I almost wonder what the point of showing this match was since these guys are about as low on the card as you can get for a small promotion like this. I’m guessing they just had a minute or two to fill and this was what they had from this set of tapings.

Sonny Kiss Vs Johnny Fitness

And the filler continues! At least, this is amusing filler. We start with Johnny Fitness doing pushups and Kiss twerking. Excellent. Fitness tries to correct Kiss’ twerking form but it’s a TRAP and Fitness clobbers him. It’s amusing to see how over effeminate African American male twerker Kiss is with the blue collared, almost entirely white white Paramus Elks Lodge audience. He’s one of the 2 or 3 most over babyfaces on the show! Anyway, this is a perfectly acceptable comedy wrestling match with some legit impressive spots. Kiss is legit very athletic. If he can get more seasoning, calm down and bulk up a bit, he might have potential. He wins with a pretty impressive seated senton. C+

ECPW Tag Team Titles Match: Frankie & Junior Flow (c) Vs Tony Vega & Ricky Palmer

Junior Flow is wearing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles inspired tights. He must have been really hyped by the new movie this summer. Since both teams are babyfaces, we get a lot of respect and handshaking spots in the beginning. Both of these teams have come a long way in a short time and we get one of the better matches we’ve seen on this show recently. Which isn’t saying much but still, a solid tag team bout here with the veterans Flow Family just edging out the talented but still wet behind the ears Vega & Palmer. The champs retain with their sweet Flying Neckbreaker/Samoan Drop finisher. Both teams hug it out after the match. But wait! Team Shazam charges down and attacks both teams. They quickly dispatch Palmer & Vega but The Flow Family sends them outside of the ring. Team Shazam challenges The Flows to a match and The Flows accept and they want to fight right now! Team Shazam contemplates but eventually heads to the back. Good segment overall (didn’t like how quickly Palmer & Vega were dispatched after the match but whatcanyado?) and set up the Flows-Shazam feud that’s a no brainer decision. B

Well, this is a show that definitely got better as it got going along , starting with a crappy lackluster opener and ending with a  pretty decent main event. I still think doing four matches in thirty minutes is a bit much. Three is ideal (two if one of the matches is a World Title Match). During these four match shows, at least one match feels entirely unnecessary as we only see two minutes of it.

The announcers mentioned the main event was the last match of the night so I’m assuming we’re going to start seeing the Maine tapings from last weekend starting next week. It’s going to be interesting because the Maine shows had an almost entirely different roster so we’ll see what happens. Also the Maine shows generally had 1000x worse production than these New Jersey shows so not looking forward to that. Anyway, I’m out. Remember to never feed your dogs chocolate and to enjoy your week! See you next Monday!
