Through the Booking Glass: UWF April 1987 Week 4

April 1987, Monday, Week 4

A sell out crowd of about 2,000 attended the UWF Power Pro Wrestling broadcast last night, but with the smaller building you had probably about half the gate the company would normally get. Most enjoyed the show.

The dark match last night saw Iceman King Parson defeat Savannah Jack with a cheap pin, enabling Parsons to whip Jack ten times with a belt.

Gary Young suffered a neck injury last night, apparently snapping his neck back hitting the ropes early in his match with Steve Cox last night. He is not expected to miss any time.

April 1987, Tuesday, Week 4

Angel of Death vs. Michael Hayes is scheduled for this upcoming weekend’s Power Pro Wrestling taping.

April 1987, Wednesday, Week 4

Eddie Gilbert will defend the UWF Television Title against Sam Houston in a rematch from Superblast on Sunday’s TV. This TV taping already looks better than Superblast did.

April 1987, Thursday, Week 4

What would be horrible news for the state of pro wrestling in Japan could be a blessing for the UWF. We have received reports that both All Japan and New Japan Pro Wrestling have undergone some financial problems and could be just months away from closing down. Should they go under, Ted DiBiase would be available to work and it could open the door for Steve Williams to return as well. Obviously nobody wants to see either company close down but DiBiase and Williams returning would be an incredible shot in the arm for the UWF.

April 1987, Friday, Week 4

One Man Gang is scheduled to defend the UWF Heavyweight Title on Sunday’s TV, but his opponent has not been named. Michael Hayes was teased on last week’s TV but he’s already booked for the show. I’ve heard The Missing Link might get a rematch from Superblast but I’d much rather see Chris Adams or Terry Taylor in that spot.

April 1987, Saturday, Week 4

Nothing new to report from the UWF, but an interesting story from the WWF Wrestling Challenge taping last night. Apparently several wrestlers got on the microphone last night and started bad mouthing the NWA, in particular Dusty Rhodes, who was called “fat” and “out of touch”, among other things last night. While all of that is true, fans said the WWF came off as petty by even mentioning the competition. Considering Harley Race was called “an up and comer” with no mention of his eight World Title reigns, I’m surprised anybody is mentioning them at all. My guess is these comments don’t see the light of day on TV.

April 1987, Sunday, Week 4

Gary Young has been fully cleared to compete, so even though he was still planning on wrestling, nobody is concerned about him aggravating his injury.

The rebroadcast of last week’s Power Pro Wrestling drew a rating of 0.02.

Power Pro Wrestling live coverage (April 1987, Sunday, Week 4)

We’re at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, TX for the second straight week.

Buzz Sawyer defeated Terry Taylor in 2:17 by pinfall with a Diving Splash. I’m impressed, they didn’t forget about the challenge from like two weeks ago. The match was really good while it lasted.

Gary Young pinned Derrick Dukes in 35 seconds with a Piledriver.

Iceman King Parsons defeated The Missing Link in 2:16 by pinfall with a Jumping Clothesline.

In a match that had an average crowd reaction and some decent in-ring action, UWF Television Eddie Gilbert pinned Sam Houston in 15:11 with a Hot Shot.

Angel of Death drew with Michael Hayes in 10:00 when the time limit expired. My normal joke would be “that was about 8 minutes too long” but this actually wasn’t bad.

Jim Ross interviewed both Chavo Guerrero and One Man Gang about their upcoming title match. No mention of their other programs.

The UWF Heavyweight Title match between One Man Gang and Chavo Guerrero went off the air at the 17-minute mark, so the “official” result will be a TV time remaining draw. The match went another several minutes after going off the air, with Young interfering to give Chavo the win by DQ.

For what it’s worth, Chavo Guerrero does not actually make the minimum weight for the UWF Heavyweight Title so he couldn’t have won the title anyway. Ross did mention it on commentary but it was a “blink and you’ll miss it” type of thing.
