Review: The Mysterious Origins of Man

Artifact anomalies, preserved evidence, wild theories, ancient civilizations… What is the true origin of mankind?

Hosted by Charlton Heston
This special originally aired on February 25, 1996 on NBC. I was among the millions who viewed it, and it has never quite left my psyche. The scientific community strongly discredited most of the pseudoscience and theories presented, but I’ll leave it up to you to form your own opinion.

Scientists and philosophers have wondered since the earliest days of cognitive thoughts about the true origins of man. Despite countless years of  research and endless theories, evidence is out there that may prove that our true history is still very much immersed in mystery.

Early man lacked an eye for science and ultimately the word of the Bible became what most saw as the factual beginnings of our existence. Charles Darwin dared in 1859 to propose that nature was evolving and natural selection was the actual reason for how man and beast came to be as we know them. The current scientific data suggests an ape species of man was on the Earth around 25 million years ago. The first human-like being to walk upright emerged 20 million years later. From there modern humans developed slowly into our present forms around 100,000 years ago.

Artifacts help modern day scientists and archaeologists determine how and when a group was on the earth. As we dig deeper into the ground, our ancestors reveal themselves as bones and other evidence paint a picture of life during those times. However, some artifacts don’t fit with our conventional scientific data. Thousands of these anomalies have been collected by Dr. Richard Thompson, and it is his belief that our real history has yet to be truly revealed.

In 1880, California miners digging for gold found crude tools and pottery than were 300 feet into a mountain. Their rock placement suggests they could be as old as 55 million years, 30 million years earlier than what is commonly accepted by scientists as man’s origins. Author Michael Cremo and Dr. Thompson believe evidence such as this has been willfully ignored in order to protect was is thought of as the hard science. The current origin story indicates that man first came out of Africa around 100,000 years ago and then migrated into Europe, Asia, the Bering Strait and finally the Americas.

In 1966, spear points and other tools were found in Mexico by Cynthia Irwin-Williams . Radiometric dating on the items suggested they were 250,000 years old. Irwin-Williams pushed against conventional beliefs and refused to ignore her data for the sake of protecting the status quo of science. As a result, the site of the discovery was closed down, and Irwin-Williams was denied access to further research opportunities, essentially blackballing her from her chosen profession.

In the age of the dinosaurs, it is not thought that any humans were around to coexist with the beasts, however a site in Texas suggests otherwise. Archaeologist Carl Baugh spent over a decade researching a spot next to a riverbed where dinosaur prints were found imbedded in the same rock as 16 inch human footprints. Twelve human prints were discovered in a clear walking stride. Debunkers tried to claim that the prints were faked to attract tourists, but Baugh insists that he and his team uncovered some of the prints underneath swaths of limestone ledges they personally removed. Vandals and natural erosion ruined many of the prints, but at least one print was lifted from the site and kept in a lab for safe keeping. A study of the print was able to indicate that the footprint was not made via carving.

A fossilized human finger, dated from around 130 million years ago, was also found in limestone. A battery of tests showed that the finger had tissue and other mammal qualities, proving that it was not a mere carving.

In South Africa, metallic spheres with carved indentations were found by miners. They were dated to be 2.5 BILLION years old. One scientist suggests that the glaciers and other natural occurrences may have dramatically altered the ability for modern man to properly age items, which may explain how anomalies exist in the ground.

The Missing Link
Darwin’s theory of evolution remains unproven as we are missing the fossil of the “missing link” between man and ape. In the late 1800’s a simian skull and a human leg bone were found in close proximity to one another, leading to the false belief that they were from the same being – dubbed “Java Man”. Although the connection was debunked a few years later, the “Java Man” remained on display at a natural history museum until 1984.

“Lucy” was the most recent simian/human hybrid skeleton that has been embraced by some scientists; others believe she is simply an extinct species of ape.

In Bolivia there lies the city of Tiwanaku, which may in fact be the oldest known ruins in the world. Local traditions suggest that the city was built over 2,000 years ago by the clans that predated the Incas. German Arthur Posnansky spent over 50 years of his life researching, measuring and exploring the site. His conclusion was that the city was in fact 17,000 years old.

The joints of some of the buildings were built with great precision and the rocks remain measurably level and tightly bound, even to this day. The temple at Tiahuanaco was built to mark the progression of the sun throughout the year. The markers on the end of the temples mark the winter and summer solaces. When measured today, the sun doesn’t quite align with the markers, which is the reason Posnansky believed that they were built long ago, when the planets were in a slightly different spot. Dissenters to his theory simply believe the builders errored while constructing their markers. Supporters of Posnansky refuse to buy into that theory, based on how otherwise perfectly laid out the 100-ton stones are. Modern believers argue that the city is at least 12,000 years old. The ancient Incas themselves told others that the city was thousands of years old.

While exploring the temple of Puma Punku on the Tiwanaku grounds, it was discovered that the massive stones that comprised the building were held together by metal that had been poured into pre-carved slots, creating a hard bar. This would require some sort of portable smelting device, which would have been an engineering nightmare for the ancients. A similar method of connecting stones was also discovered in Egypt.

The Egyptian Sphinx is believed to be 4500 years old. However, some who have used the constellation of Leo as a guide suggest that the Sphinx may be in fact upwards of 12,000 years old, with it having been built to align with the stars.

Structures in both South America and Egypt were built with stones that weighed in excess of 100-350 tons. Such structures would have been greatly difficult to build without modern technology.

In 1929, a Turkish map from the 1500’s was discovered which showed the coastlines of South Africa and Africa with great accuracy. The map notes indicate that at least 20 maps were used as a source for this map. The other maps were stated to be dated back to the time of Christ. This would seem near impossible as it was not until 1790 that a timekeeping device was invented that allowed sailors to use latitude and longitude to accurately create maps and prevent ships from crashing onto the coastlines.

Professor Charles Hapgood was researching a map from 1532 at the Library of Congress when he came to discover that the world map showed Antarctica, apparently in it’s iceless landform. This would easily predate the known discovery of Antarctica, which occurred in the 1770’s. Antarctica’s real coastline was not mapped out until 1958, when seismic testing allowed scientists to graph what lied beneath the miles of ice below them. Scientists believe Antarctica has been covered in ice for at least 2 million years.

In 1977, a Russian bulldozer operator noticed a black spot in the Siberian ice. It turned out to be a beautifully preserved Wooly Mammoth. This animal, and others that have been discovered like it, have been found with fresh vegetation in their stomachs. This suggests that the animal’s surrounding climate dramatically altered in a rapid amount of time. Theorists have suggested that “coastal displacement” or a rapid shift of the crust of the Earth, is the explanation. Many in the scientific community scoffed at this theory, but no lesser mind than Albert Einstein was open to this possibility.

Final thoughts: If you google most of these bits of “information”, you can undoubtedly find counterintelligence that debunks much of the theories and evidence provided. However, the presentation is strong and there is certainly worst forms of “infotainment” out there to waste an hour on.
