I think he mostly looks old cause the glasses and old man suit. If you put him in a t-shirt and jeans and maybe more normal glasses (but kept the mustache), he'd look like an extremely ugly pubescent boy.

Well he wasn't "forced". Monsoon read the notes he made observing the refs and offered him the gig which he graciously accepted.

Funny story about Whippleman's time as ref: there was a Jake Roberts/Goldust IC title match on Raw that Dustin won after throwing glitter in Jake's eyes. I fell asleep during the aftermath and my friend at school the next day told me Whippleman reversed the decision and awarded the title to Jake which got me really excited. Then on the weekend shows they rolled the footage of Harvey reversing the decision and awarding Jake the match by DQ and Goldust retained. I was PISSED!

I feel like Harvey as a ref got some weird backstory storyline in the WWF magazine but as we’ve found out, they aren’t necessarily connected to the actual show.

Harvey was one of the scab refs in late 1999 too.

He's aged pretty well though. When he popped up on the Rock's instagram a few months, I didn't recognize him at all. Watched the whole video about "Bruno" before it dawned on me that it's Harvey Whippleman.

I just remember the shocked face. It's been close to 25 years.

I wonder if there was an aborted heel ref turn angle or if this was just to give Harvey something to do when he wasn't running for supplies backstage.

And I believe there was also a behind the scenes video on Action Zone when that show moved to a magazine format in Sept. 95

Somehow Bret looks like the biggest dork there. Like he's the cool dad hanging out with his kid and their friends at a bbq.

Hit me earlier that the wrestler with an occupation thing lasted longer than I considered. Val did porn, Godfather pimped, Albert was a piercer-- shit lasted another few years, just with edgier jobs and arguably better workers.

I still think that the Goon, as a gimmick, could have worked in the Attitude era of violent brawls and cursing. That way he'd be much more like a hockey player.

I feel like "second job" gimmicks creeped into the undercard even during the Ruthless Aggression era but I'm having a hard time figuring out which ones. Pickpockets? Superheroes?

Hot take: I feel like Mikey doesn't get enough credit for the roles he played in the early-mid 90s. He was perfect as a sympathetic, undercard babyface, and won a "world" title (for '95 ECW standards) at the age of 19 without looking out of place. A lot of his luster wore off by the time Barely Legal took place and his WCW run is pretty much forgotten. Hell, I enjoyed the tag team with Tajiri and Sinister Minister. We need an Unholy Alliance reunion!

His original allure wore off once he learned how to really work, because the roster by then was filled with guys who could work even better. Lynn, peak Taz, peak Sabu, RVD, Storm, etc. The WCW mess and return were the best things that could've happened to him, because he was 1) a familiar face to the faithful after so many talents were leaving for the bigger companies, and 2) able to parlay his "loser" gimmick into the Sinister Minister stuff and then directly into the Unholy Alliance.

He also had a massive hand in the way modern wrestlers work, having been the principal trainer for the SAT, Amazing Red, and a few other of the NYWC indie guys that made waves for their insane spotfests back in the early CZW/ROH days.

Mikey was just a product of a specific time and place. His window was very small but the most was definitely made of it. That said his WCW run makes me happy because he's the kind of guy who you root for to make it as far as he can and make as much money as possible. Knowing how he and Heenan got along is one of the cooler things.
