97 was the Clinton era's high water mark and, ergo, the last great year in American history.

1988 and 1994 were the greatest two years for hip hop so far.

As far as recent years that I can remember, 2006 was pretty decent for summer songs.

Close, but 1893 was better. You got Dvorak's final symphony, as well as Tchaikovsky's.

1910 is a tough one to beat, too. Debussy's first book of Preludes is started, and there's the Firebird Suite, Mahler's 9th, Vaughn Williams's 1st, and Scriabin had begun his mystic phase in starting the Piano Sonata No. 6.

For metal, I don't think 1986 can really be topped.

Important bands formed:
Bolt Thrower, Grave, Immolation, Pestilence, Prong, Vader, Vio-Lence

Important releases:
Just check out this Wiki page. Somewhere in Time, Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, Pleasure to Kill, Peace Sells, Morbid Visions, and the list goes on.

Also notable, on the hair bands side...
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Cinderella - Nobody's Fool
Stryper-Honestly

And these guys...

Also notable releases:
Falco with "Rock Me Amadeus"
Madonna with "Papa Don't Preach"
Berlin with "Take My Breath Away"
Robert Palmer with "Addicted to Love"
Peter Gabriel with "Big Time"
WANG. FUCKING. CHUNG.

And this little diddy that went on to be kinda important for the major trends 10 years later...
