He was sick for a while. Had MS, I thought.

Anyway, love the guy's music; don't like his paintings at all. Had never really looked at them until now.

I think it's interesting that in producing his records, he tried to make them sound two dimensional, like a painting. There's a big spiel about it in the booklet for Doc at the Radar Station, which I didn't like at first but really grew on me.

Captain Beefheart - Saturday Night Live

This was my first exposure to Beefheart. I saw this some time in the early 90s and didn't know what to make of it at all; it wasn't until the early part of the oughts that I really "got" him and his music. SNL used to book really strange and offbeat musical acts, huh.

Yeah, Zappa was on SNL once too.

I never fully embraced Captain Beefheart. Trout Mask Replica was a nice supplement to my Zappa collection, but I never thought it was a masterpiece or anything. Bongo Fury was pretty good, though.

As much as I love Trout Mask Replica, Lick My Decals Off, Baby covers similar ground and gets it done in half the time. I usually point to that or the relatively conventional Safe As Milk as the best Beefheart starting points, with Doc at the Radar Station being the best of his late period.

I just read this as a friends facebook status update. Again, not a huge fan, but I enjoyed one or two of his albums. And again, Bongo Fury is great.

That's a quality bed for an intro.

I remember your radio show, Inc. It was good. Got me into the Replacements back in autumn 2004 when you played a song by Alex Chilton followed by "Alex Chilton." Oddly enough, it wasn't till much later that I got into Alex Chilton himself.

Ha, I remember that show!

"Alright, our next two songs feature one by a certain artist and another by someone else named after that artist. Try to figure it out." or something to that effect.

Hey, I never actually heard Ice Cream for Crow until yesterday. It's good!

A Beefheart-inclined pal of mine played some of Moonbeams and Bluejeans for me last night, and I fucking loved it. Basically Beefheart doing what sounded like laid back country.

Now Trout Mask Replica needs a deluxe reissue.
