It declared the band’s intentions to be a (mostly) unapologetic middle-of-the-road act — hardly glamorous but undeniably utilitarian in its commitment to making melodic, sentimental, and instantly accessible music that fits cleanly in the lives of a wide swath of regular people around the world straining majestically against the mundane emotional parameters of their regular lives.

I don't understand how you can judge YouTube videos of live concerts to be "overrated" or "underrated." Overrated by who? Does Grantland even bother to edit Steven Hyden columns?

This is an example of someone who has fully internalized his job. He knows what he's doing is dumb and contemptible, but it's how he makes a living. I admire his honesty and—as I've mentioned elsewhere—I appreciate that he's usually sincere when so much online is smug and snarky, but he's a terrible writer.

Like, Bill Simmons is totally smug and snarky but his "I'll just say whatever bullshit pops into my mind" style of writing occasionally produces something insightful. I've never read anything Hyden's written and thought "hey, that's a good point."

That said, Simmons is far more unbearable re: pop culture than Steven Hyden is.
