If they sound close enough to the real thing, I don't mind a good cover band. Allows me to stay local and hear music I like for a low price. I've seen a really good Santana cover band (and later saw the lead singer playing goalie at an adult soccer league in town), and this past weekend went to a show of Journey and Boston cover bands. The only drawback I see is that while talented, the band members are mostly a bunch of dorky guys that don't really look like rock n rollers.

I've seen a bunch of cover bands. Hell's Bell's (AC/DC) 2 Minutes 2 Maiden (Iron Maiden - I've also seen them play originals; I forget what their name was then, but they still sounded like Iron Maiden) Screaming for Vengeance (Judas Priest) My Friend of Misery (Metallica) and STart of Rebellion (Suicidal Tendencies). They all did a decent job - the first 3 I've seen at least twice each, the last two only once. The most mind-blowing thing, to me, was that an ST cover band even existed in Halifax - nobody here knows anything about them except that all he wanted was a Pepsi and it drives me bonkers.

That said, I'd still sooner see the actual bands, but $10 to sit in a bar and listen to someone else play the songs? No so bad.

I've seen Beast Over Boston (Iron Maiden tribute) and a bunch of actual cover bands that just played classic rock and grunge covers at bars and whatnot. BOB was entertaining but not that great.

I went to an all metal cover band show at St. Vitus in Brooklyn last year. They had Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Exodus cover bands. Pretty damn cool. Years ago, I went to a show that had STP, Weezer, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam cover acts and I wound up having more fun than I thought.

In the mid 00s there was this big "fuck cover bands" movement in the Southeastern Louisiana music scene and it really hasn't recovered as a market save for few niche' decade specific acts. To point: Last metal show I was at they set up the next song as a cover and got resounding boos.

I always enjoyed the late 90s alt rock cover band bar scene, hanging with friends and listening to them show off. I have one friend in a 3 man 50s rock nostalgia act (they play anything from 1950-1965 with a more modern sound) and they are able to charge $300/hour. They are the exception and mostly do private parties, now, as the bars are unable to afford them most nights.

I saw Brit Floyd last Friday, and they were great, played a good variety of songs, not just the hits, they opened with the first half of Dark Side Of The Moon and closed with the last part of The Wall.
