Plot
The game takes place in a fantasy world where vast labyrinths and catacombs lie beneath civilization. Magic-users seeking a legendary treasure known as the "Dragon's Crown" have used their sorcery to link each of the ruins together in order to search for it, which they plan to use for a sinister purpose. Players must take up the role of one of six adventurers to keep the crown out of their hands, as well as search for treasure of their own. Gameplay
Dragon's Crown is an action role-playing game structured like a traditional side-scrolling beat 'em up where players move their characters across the screen into the background or foreground attacking enemies. Players may choose between one of six characters—Fighter, Amazon, Elf, Sorceress, Wizard, and Dwarf—who must travel through a number of environments using standard attacks as well as magic spells to defeat enemies. Each character has their own specific strengths and weaknesses such as attack power, movement speed, special attacks, and selection of magic, with the characters' growth throughout the game also being customizable by the player.[5] During gameplay, players may come across items which can be used to aid characters, as well as equipment and weapons which can increase a character's statistics and battle strength. The title features branching paths in every level which are traveled based on the player's decisions during gameplay, such as choosing to steal an item from a boss character, running instead of engaging an enemy, or searching for secrets, which will lead to alternate areas. Quests may also be undertaken by players which hold specific objectives for each dungeon, which all come with their own rewards.

The game features an online mode over Sony's PlayStation Network which allows up to four players to experience the game simultaneously. The game will also offer local multiplayer, according to a response by George Kamitani on his Facebook wall. When a player's character runs out of lives during online play, another player may gather their bones to trade into special merchant characters who can bring that character back as an AI-controlled partner. Players may also communicate using an in-game pop-up system which can quickly convey simple messages such as "thank you" to another person.

The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of the game were designed to be identical and compatible with the same save data, which can be freely transferred between both systems. In addition, the PlayStation Vita version uses its touchscreen for item management in place of the PlayStation 3's DualShock analog stick. Decided to go with the Vita version of this. It's unfortunate that it's not Cross-Buy, but I figure I need some new games on my Vita as all I am using it for are classic PS1 and PSP games. I may double-dip on the PS3 version if it ever goes on sale or becomes a PSPlus discount/freebie game. :)

If my Vita was working, I'd buy the Vita version. I'm excited because I haven't played a brawler in a long time. I'm hoping its really good.

Battery died in it. Not under warranty anymore and if I send it in to Sony to fix, it costs me the price of a new one.

On topic though, I'm not sure who I would play as. All of them seem interesting.

They all do, really! I'll probably go with the Warrior or the Elf on my first go through.

;D Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the Elf would be fun. Though, apparently the game is quite deep so even if we play the same character, yours and mine will likely be different skills based.

:-\ I just realized this game is out this week. For some reason I thought it was next month. :( I've got no way to purchase it right now. Nuts.

Also, seems this game has been sitting in George Kamitani's mind since he made Princess Crown 13 years ago. Meaning this should be a really fun game. Can't wait till I can eventually get it.

Think I'm going Elf or Fighter. Still debating.

Ha yeah, I'm planning a trip to the Caribbean so the last thing I should do is buy a video game, but this looks like too much fun. Trying to convince some of my friends to get it too. Will most likely get this within the first month of its release.

So everyone knows that there was a whole hoopla about the art style being overdone. Well, Polygon reviewed the game, but it wasn't a review. It was yet another editorial on why the art style was bad, yet only concerning the females and not everyone else.

We know people have an opinion about the art style, but tell us about the game when you do a review. Playing only one of the six characters is not doing your job as a reviewer. Hell, that's not even bothering to do the job.

And yes, I'll say the reviewer is female, but even if it was male, I'd still have a problem.

Sounds like they decided to Make An Example out of Dragon's Crown for what really is a huge problem that still plagues the whole industry. They're seriously hurting their own sales when every "heroine" in every game looks more like a stripper. Hetero girls don't wanna play that, and you're basically telling like 40% of the world's population that you don't give a shit if they buy your games or not.

Way to generalize "hetero girls" Jingus. Not everyone has a rod up their ass about these kinds of things these days, you know. I know plenty of females who are hyped for this game regardless of the big-chested mage.

My basic point still stands. The vast majority of character models in video games are still built specifically to appeal to the fantasies of pubescent boys. And telling anyone who doesn't like it "just get over it!" is a self-defeating attitude because it's costing game designers untold millions of dollars in revenue when they ignore entire segments of the marketplace in order to super-sell to one particular slice of the demographic.

The game is going to sell what it's going to sell. Reducing the size of the Mage's boobs or putting slacks on the Amazon Warrior probably isn't going to change profits that significantly since this is a pretty niche genre to begin with. I'm not sure where you are getting your "untold millions of dollars" figure from, to be honest.

Either way, regardless of what you think, these games have markets that they want to sell to. Even if part of that market is pubescent boys, they are still a legitimate market, and to get all up in arms because someone is blatantly marketing/selling to them is to fail at understanding marketing... and to lay any major part of the blame for the "huge problem that plagues this industry" on random small/niche Japanese games that don't break sales records to begin with, and thus have really no influence on the industry as a whole, is pretty dumb.

I've been seeing this come up a lot lately, especially on NeoGAF. I remember one a while back with the hostess mini-games in the Yakuza series. Then, most recently, it was with a similar mode that was revealed for Suda 51's Killer is Dead. It seems like whenever I see this complaint come up, it's rarely from an AAA multi-million dollar seller game (I guess this issue didn't come up with Poison in Street Fighter X Tekken since she's a TVTS so it's okay that she has gigantic tits, right?) that would have greater influence on the marketplace environment and is usually cherry-picked from these very small/niche Japanese games and it's almost always a majority of males who are overly "offended" by it..

...and btw, who is saying "just get over it"? I don't recall saying that myself or reading about the developers saying that. BUT, if someone is offended by it, then they should be prepared to hear, "if you're offended by it, then don't play it." The same can be said of any entertainment medium. I don't play J-dating sims marketed toward young women. I don't read romance novels that have unrealistically jacked men on their covers that are marketed toward middle aged housewives. Then again, I am also not offended by those things. Think of the untold millions the publishers could rake in if their novels were generically geared toward everyone everywhere!

You're entirely missing the point. It's that MOST video games' female characters are clearly designed as sexual fantasies for immature males, while the male characters are largely not designed like that at all. Male heroes can be any size, any age, any shape; female characters are almost universally young and pretty and skinny and big-boobed. I'm not blaming this all on Dragon Crown, but it seems like anytime someone mentions this problem in any specific game, the answer is "well you can't blame this one game, there are games for chicks too" as if Everyone Else Does It and They Have Their Own Separate-But-Equal Games excuses the whole thing. And yes, I can't begin to tell you the number of times I've seen various people (usually fans online) say some variation of "get over it, I don't think it's a problem, therefore it's not a problem for anyone". And I also can't begin to count the number of girls I've heard complaining about it and how it makes being a female gamer less fun.

And let's be clear, I'm not saying this is the biggest problem in the industry or anything like that. If I had to decide between "realistic portrayals of the female body" and "games which feature good camera angles that don't fuck me over in battle, and completely lack missions where I have to swim through a sewer or escort some helpless child through a minefield" I'd go with the second one every time. It's just that lots of people out there are tired of all the females in games looking like Lara Croft. And it's certainly not a problem which is exclusive to gaming, pretty much every form of media has it, right down to children's toys and all the local news shows which invariably feature a middle-aged dude and a woman half his age as the lead anchors.

I'm not missing the point. I've debated this ad nauseum elsewhere. I know the point you're trying to make. I just don't agree that it is as big a problem as people like to make it out to be. Or that it's even the root of said problem.

I will reiterate that the most accessible "offenders" are usually niche/small Japanese games that have next to no bearing on the how the industry trends. If MOST games are like this these days, as you say, then find me a recent AAA game where the female lead was a ridiculous overstated or oversexed version of a woman. And, no, not blatantly ridiculous-on-purpose/satirical games like Saints Row or Deadpool. Even your Lara Croft reference is pretty dated as the most recent game had her depicted with a fairly realistic body type.

I can't even find an example in the 10 most popular games on the front page of GameFAQs (since you cited that earlier in the FF thread). In fact, most of the games on that list have character creation processes where you create and customize your own male or female character.

I also can't begin to count the number of girls I've heard complaining about it and how it makes being a female gamer less fun.

In person? Online? In the comments section of an Anita Sarkeesian video? I ask because when I make statements like, "I know plenty of females who are hyped for this game regardless of the big-chested mage," I am talking about female friends who I have discussed this very subject with. It's harder to tell if there are hidden axes to grind (let alone the actual gender of the commenter) when you're gleaning this information from random online comments, IMO.

female characters are clearly designed as sexual fantasies for immature males

I am not sure what liking big boobs has to do with being immature, but I will give you that sex and sexual images sell. I will also give you that, based on that fact, pubescent males are a market that is easy to sell to.. but I find it hard to believe that this art style was chosen with the intention that some horny males would buy the game so that they could pause it and rub one out to a pair of pixellated breasts. The same way I doubt that people are blowing loads over panels in comics that feature Power Girl. Then again, you never know these days... ;)

You can be offended by it, but there's a time and place for that. You sign up to review a game, you review the game. You do not take your review and turn it into an editorial simply because you don't like a certain aspect. A review is to review the game as an entirety, not just a slice of the pie.

You also certainly do not admit that you've only played a portion of what the game has to offer. How can I seriously take a review like this when the person admits they've only played a portion of what the game has to offer? This does not mean they need to play the game out with each character to its fullest, but I do expect a reviewer to at least say they played a good portion of all that the game has to offer.

If I played a fighting game, would you not expect for me to play out every single character? Especially since each character brings something different to the game play? How exactly can you review something if you haven't really played it? That's like taking a single bite of a meal and reviewing that. Watching a movie for 5 to 10 minutes and talking about only that. Its just dreadful.

I'm not saying you can't judge something, because you can have your opinion. However, if you want your opinion to be valued by other people, you have to actual have knowledge of the subject you speak. I'm also not saying you do not bring this up in a review, as this should definitely be addressed, but you address it and you move on. Need to talk about how "every woman in every game is a stripper"? Its a separate issue from the subject of reviewing.

The blanket statement "every heroine in every game looks more like a stripper" is so true though. I totally agree with this 100%! After all, Samus Aran is a stripper. Same with Alyx of Half Life 2. Can't forget about Cheria from Tales of Graces. Should also mention Ellie from The Last of Us. Wait, just about forgot dead girl Aerith of Final Fantasy. Oh~, Tetra of Wind Waker! There's also Elena Fisher of Uncharted. Gotta mention Floria Reinhold of Professor Layton. Those Princesses from Mario and Zelda are just as slutty as they come. The Persona girls from 3, 4 and Arena definitely need mentioning too! And finally, let's also toss out The Elf from this very same game who's got to be the biggest slut around! Right?

The reason we have these stereotypes still lingering in gaming isn't just because we want to make male players go "oh God, I want to bone her so bad', but they also leave a better lasting impression. Sad but true. After all, Bayonetta is built around this. Guess how many people cried foul there? A very small few. Yet, isn't she exactly the type of thing we should be rallying against if we're trying to stand up for this type of fight? I would think so.

Better yet, if we decreased the body proportions to all the characters would we even be having this conversation? Maybe about the Amazon because she's wearing only a bikini, but that's about it. We'd otherwise be looking at a game that's pretty much standard fantasy stuff and wouldn't have any reason to stick out whatsoever. It would still look good, but there would be nothing drawing you to it.

This does draw you in for better or for worse. I'd say for the better because look at all the conversation and word of mouth this game got. Its now probably in the hands of people who would normally never heard about it. And guess what? That was the entire point.

Regardless of its size, it's still an issue which is still pissing people off.

You're both getting too hung up on just the bodily proportions aspect, it's more than that. It's also how they dress, how old they are, and various other things which lead into their overall look. Just take this game for an example: all three of the female characters are hot young skinny chicks, with two out of three having giant boobs hanging out of their skimpy clothes. Meanwhile, the male characters? An ugly hairy viking, an old gray-haired dude, and a guy covered head to toe in armor. How often do we get ugly hairy women, old gray-haired women, or women covered head to toe in armor? And yeah, I'm sure there's a few examples out there, but they'd be a tiny minority.

In fact, most of the games on that list have character creation processes where you create and customize your own male or female character.
Obviously a game where you create your own character doesn't count, I'm talking about pre-generated content. And most of that list is comprised of create-your-own games which don't even fall under this discussion. But there is one good example sitting right there: Borderlands 2. Three scruffy-looking older male characters whose clothes cover their whole body, and one hot skinny younger female main character who's wearing a sleeveless t-shirt complete with a boob window over the sternum.

I also can't begin to count the number of girls I've heard complaining about it and how it makes being a female gamer less fun.
In person? Online?
Yes. Lots! Just google around, and you'll never run out of blogs and vlogs where girl gamers complain about this stuff. And hell yeah I've heard it in person from female friends, more times than I can even guess at. Lots of people really are bothered by this stuff.

1. "Every" was clearly an exaggeration, one I qualified in the later posts.
2. You're cherry-picking examples. Of course there's always exceptions. The rule is usually more like Lara Croft.
3. Half of your examples are underage girls or people from cutesy chibi universes. (And even they still usually wear less clothing than the men, like the micro-skirted elf with her ass-hugging short-shorts.)

And finally, THESE are seriously among your examples of non-sexualized, normally-clothed, realistically-built women?

That was the whole fucking point of listing them. Even in the top ten list you cannot find examples. The games that feature the stuff that you are complaining about are not games that dictate industry trends.

But there is one good example sitting right there: Borderlands 2. Three scruffy-looking older male characters whose clothes cover their whole body, and one hot skinny younger female main character who's wearing a sleeveless t-shirt complete with a boob window over the sternum.
Sorry, no:

borderlands_2__maya_render_by_villafj-d4r8fh4.png

One sleeve. That window is small as hell and doesn't even show cleavage. She's also not hyper-sexualized and is a pretty good example of a strong/powerful female lead.

I don't think you are researching your BL2 reference as only one of the male characters are even remotely "scruffy" looking (the dwarf - the others are a mask wearing ninja and a cocky/handsome military hotshot).*

So again no example of a current AAA game that does this?

---

*EDIT: RE: Borderlands 2. It's also worth noting that there is a second female character (DLC) in this game. Gaige the Mecromancer. Basically a super-smart teenager who has built a giant death robot sidekick. Stylized? Yes. Hypersexual fantasy girl? Not even close.

tumblr_mf1pz3l0fF1rnsqcyo1_500.png

---

The rule is usually more like Lara Croft.

EDIT 2: Man, all of your examples are really dated. Like I said before, Lara Croft is not even a thing anymore. Have you even seen the redesigned character?

150px-New_Lara_Croft.jpg

Compared to..

lara_croft_evolution.jpg

..seems like a massive difference, IMO.

I also think in some cases a lot of people miss the context of why the female looks a certain way. That is, unless it's now not okay for women to even look remotely athletic/slim or otherwise they're branded unrealistic. If you consider 2012/3 Lara Croft as still an unrealistic visage of what a woman looks like.. take into consideration that she is a cave-diving tomb raider. I'd expect her to look pretty athletic. The same goes for any woman protagonist in an action game, really. No one who is out of shape is going to survive 5 minutes in one of the many situations that these types of games put forward.

Games just aren't like that as much anymore.. so to say that it's a problem that plagues most of the industry, still, is pretty inaccurate, IMO ...and as Flik says, you have massively popular AAA games that DO dictate industry trends like the Last of Us which push women like Tess & Ellie:

tumblr_mpjxb3bwG91qlc8oso1_500.jpg

...and Marlene:

228_max.jpg

...so, like I said above, I don't think it's as massive as a problem TODAY as you'd like to believe. Maybe 5-10 years ago, sure.. but now? Not even close. The fact that a niche-genre Japanese game has big Mai Shiranui boobs on their mage does not dictate the entire industry, and IMO, it's misplaced outrage.

So its also how they act and their age, and everything about them. Good, I'm glad to hear that.

Just take this game for an example: all three of the female characters are hot young skinny chicks, with two out of three having giant boobs hanging out of their skimpy clothes.
Oh wow... You've already killed it. You just totally went on with how they look only.

You know I love how you say its 3 young female characters. Could I just point out that being a Elf means that she has a longer life span than you or I and its probably many centuries old? Also, depending on the mythology that is used, Elves may just look young.

In her introductory picture, she's carrying a skull and raises the freaking dead in her actual gameplay, the Sorceress (I incorrectly called Mage) probably has powers over life and death itself and therefore is probably just as old as the Wizard (more on Wizard next quote). Also its the breasts themselves spilling out (the animation on them too) and not actually what she's wearing that's the problem.

As for the Amazon: I'll say it once, I'll say it again; totally right.

I'll give you the Dwarf because I really don't understand that one. Just how anyone would find that attractive is beyond me. But there are woman who love a burly bear and want to be with their teddy bear. Otherwise how else does Zangief get all the women? ...okay, bad Zangief joke.

Though, you have heard the term "Knight In Shining Armor", right? That's what Fighter is and there are still woman who like this, as old fashioned as it is. The Knight must remain concealed so that when he is revealed, he can be exactly how the woman wants him to be. Its the mysterious factor, but he'll eventually turn out to be a good looking guy for the girl.

And I love how you say we should judge everything about a character, when you've declared that the Wizard is an old man. He's got gray hair, but everything else about him doesn't suggest he's old. Nearly everything on him suggests he's actually young. Did you even notice his eyebrows are brown, not white like his hair? Also, there's no indication on his face of aging of any sort.

He's not wearing a robe, but something more akin to a combination of a robe / coat. I say this because its of fine cloth and sharply cut, not woolen and drab like others. The pants are pure white and has no tears on it, indicating that they are either brand new or well kept, same with the boots. People who have more maturity and wisdom just get the inexpensive stuff, especially for a journey.

Yes. Lots! Just google around, and you'll never run out of blogs and vlogs where girl gamers complain about this stuff. And hell yeah I've heard it in person from female friends, more times than I can even guess at. Lots of people really are bothered by this stuff.
Before I made my original comment on the subject, I decided to ask seven women I know about it. Its practically the only reason I actually made that comment.

Its a small sample of them. But here are there results:

1) All the girls I talked to indicated that proportions were terrible and the very first thing that would bother them if asked about the game.

2) The Amazon. Its been said before, we all are in agreement, no need to dwell here.

3) With the Sorceress the only issue they had was that her breasts were spilling out. They would not have any issue with her dress otherwise. They call the bouncing breasts "teenage fluff" and laughed it off.

4) Though only two were gamers, most stated they would play the Sorceress due to the fact bring the dead back to be their personal army was a pretty nifty idea.

5) Not a damn one mentioned anything about the Elf other than they thought it might be fun to play.

6) It was actually a split of 3, 2, 2 among the guy classes. Wizard was the one with three. Also remember all the stuff I mentioned about the Wizard? It was brought to my attention by one of them, and then was repeated to me six more times. Woman pay better attention to those details than I do.

Point taken, if that's all he/she did then it's just a shitty incomplete review. Still doesn't make what they said untrue.
I never said it wasn't untrue. I only state that you can't judge a piece of work by being incomplete. The reason she and the site are getting so much flak is people went looking for a review and only got an editorial that barely touches on the game itself.

I specifically choose the lowest review (which at this time was) to see exactly why the game was docked so I've got an idea of the flaws it has. I was just as upset as others who went.

1. "Every" was clearly an exaggeration, one I qualified in the later posts.
I guess I should've put a tag on there stating I was doing this because saying that is just a stupid, idiotic and dumb thing do to.

2. You're cherry-picking examples. Of course there's always exceptions. The rule is usually more like Lara Croft.
Why aren't we cherry picking these examples and celebrating them!? Isn't that the point? Shouldn't we be bringing these woman up time and time again as what the industry should be held to?

3. Half of your examples are underage girls or people from cutesy chibi universes.
So I'm not allowed to cherry pick but you are? Pot, kettle, black.

You also realize that maybe the reason why most of my selections are that way, is because there isn't that many games I could pull from that have adult casts that I choose to play. Fantasy games rarely use an adult cast. This is because most adults aren't very responsive to change.

And finally, THESE are seriously among your examples of non-sexualized, normally-clothed, realistically-built women?
So which ones did you pull out?

Aerith - I don't see a problem with the outfit. Its slender, its not emphasizing the breasts in any fashion as its a single piece and her boobs aren't hanging out. As a character and her actions in the game? Not once does she use her beauty as leverage except in a mission with a freaking sleeze bag to extract information from him at sword point (Cloud). Let's take a look at the original art.

Yeah, totally sexualized for your viewing pleasure.

Also, nice picking the one shot that actually sees downwards and into her cleavage. From an angle that would let you do so. Complain about the way this is placed, not the actual girl herself.

Alyx - I'm not sure how the stuff she is wearing makes her sexualized. I've seen and still do see girls who wear attire similar to this. The shirt is probably lower cut than it needs to be, I'll admit. Personality wise, her actions are about helping Freeman out. There's never anything indicating sexual anything.

Cheria - I mean really Jingus, this is the worst of the four you brought out. Cheria spends most of the time as you parties healer, hell its her profession, and also has a problem trying to get Abell to see she cares about him. She's as shy a girl as you can get and as far away from sexual. As for her wardrobe, if you are talking about the skirt and black spats, there are girls who like to remain cute for the guy they are trying to get interested.

Before someone goes "black spats" and is in wonder, stare long enough at a picture that you have no idea what is wrong, and you'll eventually notice things you've never paid attention to.

Samus - You ignore everything about the entire franchise and you pull out the Zero Suit? I'll give you the impracticality of the heels on it, but if you are wearing that Power Suit its either you wear something akin to the Zero Suit or your naked. Considering we're still totally immature about naked bodies, not only in games but society as a whole, I think I can safely say we're kind of stuck with the Zero Suit.

Besides, you recall the NES original game? It had her in a bikini and so she needed to at least have a good enough body to wear one of those. If you had to complain about Samus, that's the picture that would've been more appropriate.

Went to two stores before finding one that was willing to sell me a non-preordered copy. I've only tried the elf and sorceress so far. It's definitely a difficult game. But it's pretty fun. The cursor takes some time getting used to.

Watched someone play it, since I had no money to buy it at the moment, but it seems that most of the questionable content is later in the game and just related to NPC characters.

And wait, there's a cursor? Huh?

You control a cursor to find treasures, and to command your thief to open treasure chests. There's a food mini game which requires you to use the cursor to prepare meals.

Very addictive game. The Elf is recommended for "experts" but I'm doing well with her.

Wow, I entirely missed that somehow. Weird.

Not surprised the Elf is for expert players since you've only got a limited amount of ammo and need to make shots count.

I don't think it's that hard to use her to be honest. The character select screen is a bit intimidating with the recommendation levels. The sorceress is considered "normal" but I thought she was harder to use than the elf.

It's pretty hard to tell what's going on when your party consists of 4 characters. I can't imagine that being fun on the vita, cause I sometimes don't even know where my own character is on a huge tv when there's a big fight going on. That's my only complaint so far.
