Free Video Converter?

Can anyone recommand a good free Video converter? I recently got a new laptop with Windows 8 and windows 8 doesn't support MOD movie files so I need a video converter but I'm afraid to download anything without some kind of recommendation. So any help?

SUPER but be careful when installing it to avoid bundled software and you'll have to uninstall a toolbar anyway.

Download Handrake and SUPER. Always use Handbrake first because SUPER is buggy shit, but it can handle more formats and containers than Handbrake so it's nice to have around.
