Lately I've been trying to finish some of the games I had played in the past before starting up on my backlog of new games. I've been pulling out games I had played a few levels on or a few times to finish up the story, grab the achievements and be done with them.

This led me to pulling out The Simpsons Game from a couple years ago. I only had a few of the achievements and saw it was listed as a game fairly easy to get all the achievements on. While I've had some fun, I end up more frustrated then I should. Some of the enemies in the later portion of the game are terrible. Due to the video game spoofing, there are a few levels where the enemies are Madden football players and Ryu ripoffs. They are particularly worse in the time trials, which are part of the achievements. In the time trials, they constantly kill you if you pay no attention to them as "Ryu" throws fireballs and Madden football players headbutt you to half health, but if you fight them, they block everything and come back rather quickly. I think the cameras are kinda sucky on this game which causes problem with enemies and reaching destinations.

I've almost got the story portion finished but the reason I haven't finished is the last stage. I guess I'll block the issue with spoiler tags for those who may play the game.
The last part of the last level is playing DDR with God. The problem is to get full achievement points, you have to get a perfect on this. The DDR is done by an awkwardly scrolling bar of characters that you have to use the D-Pad. When you are trying to do this, due to the nature of the D-Pad on controller, as you are going along it says you hit two directions at once.
Just been more frustrated with this game than I thought I would be.

I've mentioned I'm a sucker for licensed games. I'm not the best video game player but I like them and always have fun with licensed games, even ones that aren't traditionally highly regarded. Along with the Simpsons another one I've been trying to just finish up recently is the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix game. Not nearly as frustrating as Simpsons, just one little part has given me problems. I basically finished the game in early January, but there is one mini-game that has stopped me from getting the full points. In the course of the game, you have to beat the four Gobstones champion three times, which is a pain in the ass, marble-like mini-game. I beat the first three champions which was the three different variations of the game three times apiece. The last one, the school champion, has to be beaten once at each different kind of game. The problem is, one misstep and you lose. I really enjoyed the Harry Potter game but didn't expect that part of the game to hold me up on finishing it.

Anyway, I'm sure there will be many more games that some of you will mention but what games, past or present, have aspects that piss you off that you wouldn't expect to piss you off?

Me in Blockbuster: hey awesome, they made a direct sequel to Final Fantasy X!

Me at home an hour later: FUK U SQUARESOFT, DIE IN A FIRE

(Over time I've come to like not hate it so vehemently, but that initial sense of abyssmal disappointment was pretty strong.)

Ha, true but with my limited gaming ability, it usually works out alright for me. Mainly with mine, Simpsons and Harry Potter, they are games you wouldn't expect to have difficulty with but somehow I find a roadblock. Plus, there's always a few gems out there of licensed games that people have no interest in that end up being pretty good little games.

As for X-2, I was working at a Blockbuster when that came out and remember seeing some pretty similar reactions to that one.

I enjoyed the simpsons game immensely, infact i may replay it. The one major problem i had was the Big Boy boss fight, for the life of me it took ages to enter where you need to destroy it. Gah.

Yeah, that one seemed to take a long time too with him being too far away to make the last jump but for some reason that one didn't bother me as much as some of the time challenge stuff or trying to do that level I put in spoiler tags. Early on I was really enjoying it but around the time the aliens come into Springfield, it seems like the bad guys suddenly go from being pretty easy to handle to every bad guy takes forever to get down, blocks everything and respawns non-stop. I have enjoyed the cut scenes and different things in the game but I think some of the later part of the game has some flaws.

Let's see... I'll go with my main domain, which is RPGs.

Star Ocean 3 - Don't get me wrong, its an absolutely wonderful game, but the story takes one of the most "wtf" plot turns I've ever seen in an RPG that basically makes everything, a big "why the fuck".

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - It wasn't a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics. Only reason it got the name, is because it pulls the same trick Final Fantasy does and every new incarnation is a "new" Ivalice.

Any Suikoden That's Not I, II, or V - III is the best example of this: You play 3 different storylines (two of which are boring), all the while trying to the actual main plot. You finally do get there and actually get to meet the "main character" (or at least the guy you've named) and its like for 1/4th of the game. There's more to it than just that, but I'm getting pissed just thinking about this game. Also magic never, EVER helped you. Especially Fire Magic.

Ar Tornelico II - Luca is using you so that she can find her sister, and doesn't really honestly care about you. Well, sure, she might sorta have feelings, but how in the fuck do I believe that? Cloche knows what she's doing is wrong, but still continues on the path and for some forsaken reason I join her? The game's hero just makes me pound my head on a table. I'm not even going into the amount of glitches this game has, but the one I will mention is last boss must be killed in 3 turns. You don't have a choice on that.

Chrono Cross - Let's take away everything that made the first game great, by killing it off. Literially.

Tales of Legendia - The first half of the game is the "main" plot line and you figure, we'll get to go off of this island we've been riding on finally and get to see the rest of the world! ...no, second half of the game is spent on still being on the island, massive back tracking, and one of the those moments.

Final Fantasy IX - Honestly, Kuja couldn't've been the final boss? I mean he pretty much was the boss of the game, why bring out Mr. "I'm a being from the darkness no one has heard of me, but I will destroy you!" types? Was there really a need?

Legend of Mana - Plot or story? What's that?

Legend of Dragoon - A game that should've been much better than what we got. Also, Rose is the main character's mother? WHAT?

If I can think of some more, I'll post them.

I really enjoyed the Simpsons Game. But some of those last achievements I had to get really pissed me off. I'm thinking of the endless collectibles and a couple of the time trials. HATED THEM.

Anyone who saw the commercials for FFX-2 didn't have that moment because it was pretty clear it was going to suck. WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU?

What was it specifically you hated about it? :p

The flying/flight training missions in GTA: San Andreas are probably the first examples I can think of a game pissing me off so much that I stopped playing it for weeks before returning to finish it.

There are several purple coin levels in Super Mario Galaxy that made me want to break my TV.

As I mentioned in the What Are You Playing Now thread, I'm currently playing through Super Mario 64 and there are a few stars that are putting me close to committing homicide.

...are you kidding? We're talking 'bout Final Fantasy X-2 here, the most roundly hated entry in the entire series. Surely you've heard the years of bitching that this game has caused among the fanboys. Even without the later complaints, the beginning was shockingly awful: the inexplicable J-pop concert that opens the game, the Pretty Princess Dressup job system, and oh yeah the complete derailment of Yuna as a character, those were all a good start. Compare that to the first game, where Godzilla eating Neo-Tokyo is the opening segment.

As mentioned, I've come to enjoy not thoroughly loathe the game over time, but still, it did not make a good first impression.

Jingles, all i can say is that you had to know what you were getting in to before you played it, right? The commercials alone were enough to make me not even bother.

Final Fantasy has had a bunch of these.

Final Fantasy X-2 for all the reasons listed, although I hated it less than most.

Final Fantasy VIII pisses me off, just because I end up about two blows away from beating Ultimecia at the end and all of a sudden lose pretty much every spell I have that can help me in the fight.

Don't get me started on Final Fantasy XII.

And yet I'll probably buy Final Fantasy XIII on release day.

Yeah, this. Also the section where you have to go around reclaiming gang territory at the end. It's always kinda bummed me out that probably my favorite game ever has two sections that are just unbearable to get through.

edit: FFX-2 was awesome, you shitheads.

Not even just at the end, having to reclaim territory in general. Most times I just said fuck it and let it go, going back to reclaim later.

That's an issue in Saint's Row too, the problem there is that it actually affects stats and whatnot if you just let everyone take over or re-take your areas.

I actually never went back to (and hence never finished) San Andreas because of the idiotic flight training missions.

Resident Evil 5. The story seemed like a more African, and less fun version of Resident Evil 4 and the partner AI was horrible.

Let's see, how can I get pissed off at more games? Why talking about more bad games~!

Wild Arms 4 - Can I get some wall banging? Cast is a big bunch of cliches, we get miracle revelations from the cast without a why as to how they came across them and the battle system is not executed well at all.

Lufia: The Legend Returns (Lufia 3) - Erim is fucking alive. AGAIN~! After Lufia, she's depowered and doesn't remember anything! Yet she's somehow alive for that game and remembers EVERYTHING! the only explanation I can figure is that Lufia and Erim split apart from each other, but that still doesn't make any sense what so ever!

And someone decided that this game deserved every dungeon needs to be totally random! Oh, did I mention that any time you enter the dungeon it randomizes? WHAT THE FUCK!?

And then I had the stupidity to play Lufia: The Ruins of Lore (which is actually a Gaiden, and not apart of the main series). Yeah, I'm glutton for Lufia punishment. Which is why I'll probably play the new game and it'll suck and I'll still play it.

I was actually stuck there for months and had pretty much given up on the game completely, but then one day I randomly decided to give it another go and managed to pass everything without much trouble at all. It was weird.

I find that happening often on games I get stuck on...I'll try and try for hours, days, can't get anywhere...then I'll return to them weeks later and pass the part as if it were the easiest section of the game.

I think that's the one...the one where you have to jump across all of the disappearing blocks that form in to a giant 8-bit Mario? Definitely one of the afformentioned times I had to walk away from the game for a few days before giving it another shot.

King Kong - God damn it, all I heard was how easy the achievements were in this game. So I pick it up cheap and to get the full 1000, I have to play through the entire game. Too bad the game is balls and I never want to touch it again.

I was just curious because I never made it too far. The dub/dialogue is so embarassingly bad and stupid. Plus, at points it gets too girly even for me (and I read girly comics and manga!). Plus, there was plenty of creepiness to boot with Brother wanting to fuck his cousin.

I thought the actual gameplay was okay, though

I finished the game but there was a point that I was stuck on for a while because of a glitch, so I definitely get that. I had gotten it for cheap and was going to hang onto it at first being one of the first 360 games but after beating it, I realized I would have no desire to ever play it again and sold it.

Legend of Mana - Plot or story? What's that?

Let alone, "Good gameplay and control? What's that?" It's such a shame, too. The art and music (Yoko Shinamura!) in that game is fantastic, but it's so, so wasted. :(

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - It wasn't a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics. Only reason it got the name, is because it pulls the same trick Final Fantasy does and every new incarnation is a "new" Ivalice.

I wanted the main characters to die a horrible, slow, painful death.

Then I wanted the judges to die a horrible, slow, painful death.

What a fucking piece of shit game.

Also, did anyone designing the game ever think "hey, this is a portable game, and portable titles should, inherently, play at a rather brisk pace compared to console games where you can sit back and relax for a long period of time"? No? It actually seems as if it is more sluggish than the original FFT (judges don't help, though).

I'd heard how hard this star was ahead of time, so I made sure to have someone on as player two because they can point at the squares and keep them from disappearing for a few extra seconds. This didn't work. So I let my friend take over while I did the player two bitch work. Of course, that didn't work. Then I tried it by myself for the first time and got it 8)

I played through Majora's Mask via Virtual Console for the first time over the last couple of months and loved it, especially since I was using a GCN controller. I loved it so much that I'm playing through Wind Waker for the second time. Here's a game that's pissing me off, and it's not the style of the graphics (which I always enjoyed). The controls are frustrating me at certain points, and so is the camera. Not to mention how useless the map is unless you go square by square and feed those talking fish. I just want to play the Gannon fight one more time, so I hope I can endure the Triforce fetch quest.

I'll go ahead and jump on the Final Fantasy X-2 bandwagon. I fucking LOVE FFX, and thought it ended fine. There was closure, and the story didn't need to be continued. Now, what I could have gotten on was a prequel to X. Let me control Jecht, Auron, and Braska on their pilgrimage. I gave X-2 a chance and got about halfway through the 4th chapter, and said fuck it.

Super Mario Galaxy. Fuck that game. Seriously, fuck it in the ass.
I have trouble controlling on the Wii anyway because I'm holding the joystick in one hand and I've never had steady hands (they shake a lot). So I have enough trouble controlling the character, but then they make it to where you can fall off anything and the levels are so small and it just causes me to pull my hair out in frustration and quit.
I gave the game to my brother and told him to keep it, I don't want it anymore.
