I mentioned something about it in the 2011 Music thread. A terrible way to die and at such a young age.

Nine Types of Light is good, though I'm finding it hard to say something in-depth about it. A kind of refinement on what they've done so far. "Will Do" is the standout.

We can make this a thread about the album in his honor, because I've been pondering the album for the last month or so and haven't gotten around to bloviating about it yet.

I saw them live two days before the album came out (and got it early at the show--huzzah!), and the new songs were tremendous live. The slower songs that come off more like straightforward love songs than we're used to were super-charming, and the more uptempo crazed stuff really had that feel maximized (especially "Repetition," which was probably the second-best thing they did all night, outside of "Young Liars"--absolutely nothing beats that song live). On CD, I like it a lot, but it hasn't overwhelmed me the way three of the four previous releases did. Dear Science took a little time to run me down, as the arrangements had so many layers that I didn't really unpack them until I'd been through it 6 or 7 times, but I don't know if that'll happen here because of the generally looser and less at-war pace of the whole affair. I think this is a TV on the Radio album that I can listen to when I'm not quite ready to be stomped and twisted.

On a note about the live show, it's kinda funny watching a band you've been tracking from the start as they develop the fixtures in their set lists. I've seen them after each album release since Desperate Youth, and the constants have evolved from just "Satellite" and "Staring at the Sun" to include expected ones ("Wolf Like Me") and somewhat surprising choices ("Blues from Down Here," "The Wrong Way"). I think they're the first band with whom I've been able to do that.
