Got 1989 on right now. Opener is the Z-Man vs Mike Rotundo and it's a snoozer. Show is in Philly btw so of course they're behind supposed heel Rotundo

Crowd seems to like the Midnights a lot more than Zenk.

Couldn't Tama get tights to match Fatu and Samu?

Crowd loves Dr. Death. He was supposed to face Luger for the US title before Sting's injury and Lex's face turn. Makes me wonder what the plans were for him before all that stuff went down.

Cornette makes the chicken gesture at Humperdink but crows like a rooster for some reason.

Doc damn near drops Fatu on his head while throwing the Samoans around near the end.

Did we really need to see the Cuban Assassin on PPV? Crowd shits on this one too, taking breaks periodically to chant "Tommy Rich sucks"

Freebirds vs the Dynamic Dudes for the tag titles is up next, and you can pretty much guess who Philly is behind in this one.

Badstreet USA is dubbed over this one, as they actually used "Free Bird" on this show. It's pretty obvious too as their entrance and dancing does not really sync up with the music at all.

Freebirds win but the Steiners take the belts from them maybe a couple days later

All kinds of dubbed-over music on this show as the Steiners were still using Welcome to the Jungle here, and Doom used Bob Seger's "Her Strut".

I think this was the debut of Doom as a team. Scott drops Simmons on his head with a German right out of the gate.

What are we supposed to assume that Woman loaded the mask with that would go unnoticed by everyone?

Flyin' Brian, with cheerleader escort and God-tier mullet, is out the challenge for the US title against the "heel" Lex Luger. Ross and Caudle are heaping praise on Lex big time as the future star of the 90s.

Lex gave Pillman a lot in this one, but I've always believed Pillman came up in the worst era possible. In an era where your size doesn't matter as much to your push he is likely a multiple-times world champion. Even as is I could probably still see him getting some main event time if the accident never happens.

Another hoss tag battle, as the Road Warriors take on the Skyscrapers. Iron Man is surprisingly kept in the cut for the Warriors. Great showcase of the aura of SID, as he overpowers the Warriors throughout the match and no-sells their offense.

Match of course ends in a schmozz, but in a rematch at a later Clash show we did get Spivey legit beating the dogshit out of Hawk with a chair.

Pillman was supposed to come in months before he did. IIRC Dusty wanted him and then lost power. George Scott then canceled his debut. The AWA was actually teasing a Bad Company vs Bad Company match in early 89 that probably had zero chance of happening.
They were name dropping Barry Windham as well and that may have been before he even dropped the US title.

I think Pillman might even be one of the talents they name for the Team Challenge Series that never makes any bookings.

Can't help but wonder how Ole Anderson felt about playing a babyface given what we know about his real life demeanor.

Bruno is the special ref for the main event, which doesn't really seem to make any kind of impact on the match, which even Bob Caudle more or less says at one point. (Fake edit: I guess he does lay a shot in on Muta at the end.)

JR gets a jab in at the Ultimate Warrior while going over Sting's history in the business.

Probably the coolest spot in the match has Funk hanging from the top of the cage leaving himself defenseless to a series of chops from Flair, which is sadly obstructed by one of the decorations on the other side of the cage. Gotta love those WCW production values.

The Samoan Swat Team used the Halloween theme song as well. I remember renting the tape as a little kid and being scared by the music.
