Halo - The Franchise

Storyline:

Halo Wars
Halo: Reach
Halo
Halo 2
Halo ODST
Halo 3

Its coming up to a week since Halo ODST was released. I've finished it on normal, and managed to do a few firefight modes. I'll see if I can get a review up for it soon.

Started a thread, as I thought it was odd there wasn't one for any of the franchise games yet! One thing's for sure; after playing ODST, I fancy going through all the games in the franchise again just to take in the story. The Halo Lore is pretty engaging, though not overly original.

I had Halo 3, played it for a couple of hours, then the dog we had at the time destroyed it and I haven't felt like repurchasing it. And that's my entire experience with the Halo series.

The only issue I have with Halo, is I associate the decline of Xbox Live with Halo 2 and the stoner abusive college kids, and stupid singing British kids it seemed to attract. Before that, Xbox Live was a pretty mature civil place!

Such is the way of the internet. I've been a member since the beginning and the real reason it was so good early on was that there was only a handful of people on it. Anyone who plays remotely popular PC games online can tell you horror stories about players, and it's the same with Live.

IIRC, it wasn't even Halo 2..it started getting huge around the time Rainbow Six 3 was big.

I've been a big Halo fan since the first Halo came out when the Xbox game out. I remember bringing my Xbox and Halo over to my friends place and all of my friends instantly jumping on it. In my opinion Halo 2 has been the best one out of the series so far. The multiplayer (except for a few bugs here and there) was pretty much perfect and the campaign was also pretty good, minus the cliffhanger ending everyone hated.

I just finished ODST and really enjoyed it. It felt good to have the old pistol back. I also liked that it was more of a game that was more or less a way to help progress and tell the Halo story but still plenty of action to keep someone satisfied.

That Halo 2 ending fucking pisses me off.

Halo 3 had a good ending I thought when you beat it on Legendary.

I had Halo and beat it. Had Halo 2, can't remember if I beat it or not. Kind of lost interest in it after that, and I don't have a 360 anyway. Great game mechanics though. It's incredible how immersive they were able to make the game, even on the original Xbox.

I essentially quit playing Halo (which I had played religiously; 2 and 3 anyway) when I got into Call of Duty 4, but up until that point, it was my favorite online game. Despite my lack of interest in Halo 3 for a long time, I have been hankering for some campaign mode as well as to try out the new ODST. Hopefully, my friend with a modded system will get ODST and I can just play through it at his house like I did with The Beatles: Rock Band.

Other games tried to take me away from Halo and for a long time, I didn't play Halo 3. I just got sorta bored of it. Call of Duty 4 did a good job of distracting me from Halo 3 but after a few games of Call of Duty, I would get very bored of online play. Plus I never owned Call of Duty 4 just rented it here and there so I never would go...well I feel like playing Call of duty so I'll just pop it in.

Halo's also been the mulitplayer I've always enjoyed out of every game I've played online. It's just something you can always go back to and enjoy.

Haha ended up playing Halo3 Multiplayer for 3 hours last night when I couldn't sleep. It strangely matched me up with this stoned Welsh guy in squad mode, he was well out of his mind. Kept shouting 'LETS GO LADS!!!!!' and would charge into a team of other people and die.

Then you'd see him a few minutes later in a Tank running riot, like some demented pyromaniac from a satire war movie.

As for the COD4 v Halo3 multiplayer argument, I always wimp out and say I like them both as they're both a different experience. I really enjoyed the old Rainbow6 Multiplayer games, they were slower and required a little more thinking/tactics. Halo2/3 allowed you to just be crazy and not really worry too much about tactics.

That made me laugh. Hard.

I may pop in Halo 3 tonight if I'm not feeling too tired. I don't have any of the DLC maps, though, so could I even play in ranked matches?

Good luck finding a decent match in Halo 3 now without any DLC, same as GOW i often get kicked because i dont have X map pack.

And the real reason for posting in this thread: I just found out the cast of Firely/Serenity are the voice actors for the ODST guys. Awsome.

I think you can play Lone Wolf and that's about it for ranked with out any DLC. If you get ODST you get all the Map Packs anyway!

Too bad you couldn't get him to shout, "LEEEEROY JENNNNKINS" at least once.

Fillion was in a previous Halo as well. His character name was even Reynolds...although I'm unsure of his rank.

It involves me having to download another disk.. cant be assed cause im not a big halo online user.

Seems Fillion was just a random sargent.. probably during the hanger sections.

So were Baldwin and Tudyk. I think Tudyk's the one who dropped the "Tank beats everything!" line during the mission in...3(?) when you're driving the Scorpion down the wrecked highway blowing Covenant Ghosts and Wraiths to shit, and Baldwin actually worked in a "shiny!" (I think the line was, "We get to fight with Master Chief? Shiny!"). I'm actually surprised at the VAs they got for the Halo games. I remember Michelle Rodriguez and I think Laura Prepon did some of the voice work for the cannon fodder Marines as well.

I also definitely remember David Cross in what had to be...2? I'd laugh every time I heard his voice as random soldier doing stuff.

I typed up this long post explaining why I am returning Halo 3 to GameFly without finishing it, but something happened with my browser and it didn't show up. I'm not going to waste my time typing it all up again, so I'll summarize with 3 bullet points as to why I didn't like it:

- The story was completely lost on me as I have never played a Halo game and didn't know who any of these characters were and why they were doing what they were doing, so I really couldn't care about anything that was happening. Some sort of primer would have helped, especially when I'm waiting 10 minutes for the game to load.

- The level design, weapons and enemies are pretty bland. I got lost a few times figuring out where to go because the radar they give you is basically useless. Why do the little imp-like enemies sound like Ewoks anyway?

- The vehicle sections are absolutely terrible. You are either fighting overly sensitive steering if you are driving or dealing with FUCKING RETARDED NPC drivers that take 5 minutes to go anywhere because they either run into walls, swerve all over the place, or run right into enemies.

I didn't even try online because I didn't feel like getting killed over and over by people that have been playing it every day for two years. I can pop in CoD4 for that.

EDIT: I'm watching Yahtzee's review again and it basically hits every single point I had so just watch that instead

Sounds like you're just nitpicking about the game.

- The NPC's driving the warthog aren't that bad at all, though I actually do prefer to drive them around because every once in awhile they will get stuck or go in the wrong direction than I need them to.

-Your complaint about the story seems more of an issue you can fix if you just played the other games first or looked up the storyline online if not knowing the story bothered you that much.

-The radar doesn't tell you where to go, it never has. It tells you when enemies are around you.

-The weapons and enemies have been pretty much the same since the first Halo. If the enemies are to bland for you, you should try it on a harder difficulty where they're much more of a challenge.

Is it just me, or is ODST a LOT harder than Halo 3? Now I'm stuck on Kizingo Highway trying to defend this point with Dutch, and there are hundreds of enemies but no health packs. I can't get past it.

There's some health packs hidden down a little ramp way that leads into a building, its behind the bit where all the troopers are.

I still can't find them.

Has anyone else downloaded Halo Waypoint?
