So I am getting Dish's HD receiver/satellite installed as we speak....dude is in living room installing it.

So....the box has an HDMI output but only component comes with the box. Tech said he had HDMI cable for sale for $20...LOLOLOLOL.

But anyways, yeah I aint buying it from him, but will the picture look better if I do go to wal-mart and buy an HDMI cable or is it fine using the component input?

EDIT: From what I have gathered thus far, quality is not an issue in HDMI vs. Component, HDMI has the obvious advantages, less bulky, only a single cord to carry video/sound, but I haven't found anything yet that says "picture quality" will be any different. On high def forums, one poster did mention HDMI 1.3 has some advantages, but he didn't elaborate.

Depends on your TV. I know Dish has 1080p service, but some TV's won't do 1080p through component, only HDMI or another digital cable. But for god's sake, buy your HDMI from monoprice.com. It's about $4 or $5.

Has anyone used one of those "best settings" calibration websites where you put in your tv's model # and it tells you how to adjust it to get best picture possible?

I think the only 1080p service though is the Dish Turbo which is like their version of On-Demand, but I believe it is just PPV movies, which is something I won't ever be doing anyway.

HDMI is the way to go due the fact its a digital signal through a digital cable. There is some minimal degrading with the analogue component varient.

Edit: When i say minimal, only true technogeeks can spot the difference, but it does exist apparently.

The markup on Monster is ridiculous. My brother works for the Source and can by things at the original cost. He can get a $120 Monster HDMI cable for like $10-$12 bucks.

Yes, go get an HDMI cable. Tech Guy from DirectTV has a reasonable deal with his $20 HDMI, but even with my past retail career, knowing the frightening markup, I was delighted to find how cheap Monoprice really was. Hit that shit up.

As far as benefits of HDMI , it will offer a better picture than any other cable out there. Will you notice a difference? Maybe - I essentially watched TV for a living for six years, and this isn't taking into account what your TV is/isn't capable of. Is it one cable instead of five? Yes.
