Oh, I don't mean to pick on you. It's just a part of a larger problem. Somewhere—in this thread or one of the other catch-all threads—there was a string of posts about the new Tron movie. Why not start a thread about it?
I have no real interest in the original or the upcoming sequel, but as Incandenza said, there's been a lot of talk and no thread. So here's a place to talk about both.

I'm actually interested in this, though what interest I have is sure to wane if/when negative reviews from the nonfanboy crowd start to appear. I loved the original as a child.

I'm not too familiar with Tron, but the preview looked crazy. I might watch this.

I just watched the original again a couple months ago, for the first time since childhood. It reminded me a lot of Avatar in some ways: a rather dull script about a warrior-messiah who travels to a strange land and manages to lead a war against an evil army, saved by some of the most unbelievably gorgeous cutting-edge eye candy that you've ever seen in your life. (Although I'd argue that Avatar's acting and dialogue was better; the Dude's big NOOOOO when he's ordered to kill Ambassador Mollari in the space-death-handball game is a terrible groaner.) The really amazing part to me is how well many of the effects still hold up. Sometimes you can catch them recycling a few particular CGI shots here and there, and every once in a while a little bit of hand-drawn animation peeks its head out and screams hello, but otherwise the digital work is so far ahead of its time that it took the rest of Hollywood long years to catch up with it.

I saw this for the first time a few months back. I agree about the effects. It really holds up well. I like the acting a lot and the story is very good. Disney has dropped the ball in re-releasing a DVD for this one before the new movie. Come out with a special edition that includes "Movie Money" and you'd have a hit.

Im sure I'll be checking out the original a few times in the next week before the release. Loved it when I was a kid so its basically ultimate nostalgia for me.

BTW I'm not real big on scores from films, but this one is something else, just found it online tonight and listening through it right now. Like I need to be anymore geared up for Legacy, well Daft Punk sure did it with this.

Ill be there opening night in San Diego, hopefully will be able to get tickets for the 3D DBox showing late night on the 17th there. If not, the IMAX for sure.

Speaking of which, I read some piece recently that said the 3D is supposed to be "the best ever" in that IMAX format this time around. I guess some of the scenes are filmed in the full IMAX aspect ratio (much like they did with parts of Dark Knight and Transformers 2 in the format) which is supposed to put some parts of the film over the top if you go to a true IMAX location (few and far between).

I remember HATING the original, but this new one looks good. I especially want to see if young Jeff Bridges looks good, or if it turns into another X-Men 3 young Xavier type thing.

I love the score. I tell people, that if they are Daft Punk fans and only want the soundtrack because of that, they will not like it. Only a couple of songs have that Daft Punk feel to them. It's fucking epic.

Based on footage, it looks like it's still at the "young Xavier" stage. Not quite natural looking enough to be totally realistic. But, since he's just a program anyway, maybe they can play it off.

Seriously. This is some kinda shit right here. I'd heard all over we were getting a bluray release of the original the week that the new one comes out. Noooo, of course not, now. Apparently Disney may be "afraid" to release it because it would look too inferior next to the new movie and thus look like a joke... which is bullshit since a release like that wouldn't necessarily be there to woo any new fans but more or less to appease older fans who would definitely buy it. IE: ME.

If people are going to turn away form the new movie based on the effects of the old one, then they weren't that interested in seeing it anyway, and they are just looking for an excuse to not see it.

I'm always fascinated by this attitude of some people who are seemingly forced to see the latest big budget affair.

I think people are smart enough to realize that FX quality has improved tremendously between 1982 and 2010.

Yeah, it's silly and lame, but they'll likely end up releasing it when the new Tron is ready for Blu/DVD. It'll happen eventually.

I grabbed the LEGACY score while Amazon had the $4 digital edition and do not regret that one bit. It's pretty much all I've listened to.

It's fantastic. The only thing I'd say is, that if someone wants it thinking that it's going to sound like typical Daft Punk, don't. They did a wonderful job with it. Only a few songs have their sound.

I'm going to watch the original sometime this week. I've seen it...but not since I was a kid.

Ive watched the original a few times this week and I guess I can somewhat understand why Disney got cold feet to re-release this right before the sequel, since the technology they used here would be laughed at if anyone even remotely came close to use the same stuff these days. That said, it's still a real fun movie to watch again after all these years. I'm already pumped to see what all characters they have return for the sequel for sure.

I'm going to the midnight show tonight at the IMAX in the cities (one of the very few IMAX facilities that presents it the way its meant to be seen, ie no watering down screensize or etc), it's sold out as of today so good thing I got my ticket a few days ago.

It's all relative really...computers then were nowhere near as fancy as they are now, so really Disney is just being retarded.

True, but there are a lot of stupid retarded casual filmgoers who dont see a lot of trailers and ads ahead of time that might think that the sequel has some of the same look and feel of the original. And thus may skip out on the new one because of that reason.

It's not that I really agree with what they did (not re-releasing the original on DVD/BR yet) but I can understand it a bit.

I kind of think the fact that the original is so hard to find right now actually may increase the interest level for the sequel in some weird way too.

The original was decent, regardless of what you think about the special effects. It was panned by critics when it was released though, and kind of became a "cult classic" over the years. Like I said, it was decent, but not much more.

The sequel reeks of a movie that was basically phoned in on every level besides the special effects and even a lot of reviews say the special effects weren't even all that impressive and the parts that were, were far and few between.

The only thing that seems to be universally accepted about this movie is the soundtrack.
