The HIV rate in Greece increased significantly between 2009 and 2011, with about half of new infections being self-inflicted by people looking to become eligible for approximately $950 in monthly benefits, according to a report released Monday by the World Health Organization.

Similarly, the report states, homicide and theft rates doubled, heroin use increased “significantly” and suicide rates went up among Greeks reporting “economic distress.”

Prostitution also increased, most likely in response to the country’s economic instability.

And just how bad is the country’s economic situation? Greek unemployment currently sits at about 27.3 percent, public debt as a percentage of gross domestic product is a whopping 161.3 percent and its economy has contracted four times since 2009.

That sounds like a solid plan to make some money. $900 bucks for getting HIV..though I think the FSA here in the US having 10 kids they can't afford for the welfare have them beat..you can't get HIV 10 times. Oh, and there's that pesky being sick all the time and possibly dying problem..

Nice job actually providing a link Marvin. http://www.foxbusiness.com/economy-policy/2013/11/25/european-crisis-half-hiv-infections-in-greece-are-self-inflicted/

Read the actual report it's based on http://ewsd.wiv-isp.be/Rapid%20communications%20%20extra%20information/Report%20of%20the%20Greek%20FP%20expert%20group%20-%20AIDS.pdf

some "the well founded suspicion that some problem users". Not exactly a smoking gun. It's only one of a number of potential reasons they considered and it was picked out because it was the most sensational. Also

A significant increase in HIV infections occurred in late 2010. The latest data suggest that new infections will rise by 52% in 2011 compared with 2010 (922 new cases versus 605), with half of the currently observed increases attributable to infections among intravenous drug users

300 new cases of HIV from the time of the report, so if "half" of them are truly purposefully getting HIV (and we he have well founded suspicions!) that's 150 people in a country of 11 million.

Since the thread topic turned out to be bullshit (shocking), why don't you give us some hard facts on this tidbit, instead?

Ronald Reagan invented "welfare queens" and Glen Beck believed him.

Marvin saying things like this is proof the only poor people he knows are the ones he fights with over 3 cent bags of rice at the salvage mart.

snuffbox, what's your position on strapping young bucks buying t-bone steaks with food stamps?

Joke answer would include something about bootstraps.

Real answer: Sounds good to me! The vast majority of food stamp recipients are working people and their families. I don't begrudge how anyone spends their SNAP benefits. I don't even mind anyone treating themselves to a soda or a candy bar with their SNAP card.

Alternate joke answer: Let them eat Bonzo.

Any chance you'll be showing us some evidence of those 10-kid welfare queen families, Marvin? Or was Glen Beck saying "do your research" proof enough for you &, therefor, it should be good enough for everyone?

So you're saying that SNAP works as intended, and provides a supplement to working people who otherwise wouldn't be able to meet a basic standard of living? That can't be right.

Well I think I read somewhere that welfare queens and strapping young bucks forgot about 9/11 and The Benghazi and bought steaks and convertibles and if we would deport more Mexicans and stop paying for foreigners to go to college it would solve 80% of our problems.

The other 20% will be solved by going back and making those bank bailouts big enough to satisfy Glen Beck.

Greece enacted a new employment law this week that lays out a six-day workweek — at a time when dozens of other countries are increasingly seeing positive results from experiments with four-day workweeks.

The new system allows employers to decide unilaterally whether a worker should come in on a sixth day. It leaves intact rules that allowed the option of a six-day workweek, in which employees work 6.5 hours for a total of 40 hours weekly, as Greek public broadcaster ERTNews reports.
